The present invention relates to a barrel for firearms. The
<EMI ID = 1.1>
a high initial speed of the projectiles and a relatively prolonged operation. However, these requirements subject the barrel of the weapon to considerable stresses, which generally make it necessary to replace the barrel after a relatively short time.
The barrel of a weapon can be regarded as a tube with thick walls whose material is subjected to higher tensions in the radial and tangential directions, than in the axial direction. Until now, barrels were executed by forging a blank, an operation during which the blank of the barrel was continuously influenced in the radial direction, which means that it acquired
greatest resistance in the axial direction.
The object of the present invention is to produce a barrel whose most favorable physical properties are exerted in the radial direction and the tangential direction. According to the invention, this is achieved by the fact that at least part of the barrel consists of annular elements juxtaposed to each other and which are punched from a rolled sheet and arranged coaxially with respect to the axis of the barrel.
The invention will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which; FIG. 1 represents part of a barrel provided with an inner jacket and of which a section has been formed according to the invention. FIG. 2 represents a gun, part of which has been established according to the principle of the invention.
In Figure 1 the index 1 designates the outer part of the barrel, which is provided with channels 2 for a cooling liquid and in which a jacket is inserted. The latter consists of two parts 3 and 4, the first of which constitutes a liner section made up of annular discs 5 welded to each other. These discs were punched from rolled sheets,
so that they offer the best physical properties in their radial and tangential directions. Section 4 is made of steel in the usual way, this section being called upon to withstand lower tensions.
Each time a projectile is fired, the temperature of the wall
of the liner rises in very high proportions. The liner is therefore preferably formed by discs 5 welded to each other and arranged in the part subjected to the greatest wear.
In figure 2, the index 6 designates the anterior part of a barrel and 7, the posterior part of this barrel. The two parts are assembled using a sleeve 8 provided with an internal thread 9 which cooperates with the respective external threads of the two parts 6 and 7 of the barrel. A tubular sleeve 5 is provided at the rear end of part 6 of the barrel. According to the invention, the sleeve 5 is formed by annular sheet metal elements welded together, these elements being punched in a rolled sheet, so that the best physical properties are manifested in the radial direction and in the tangential direction of the sleeve .
The sheet should have a high melting point, preferably at

tungsten, optionally alloyed with a proportion of up to 5% of one or more of the following metals titanium, beryllium, zirconium, vanadium or tantalum.
The solder material used to join the annular members together should have a relatively high melting point, and preferably, favorable thermal conductivity properties; it could consist of nickel or copper, for example.
