<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Deux passages 25 et 26 non axiaux situés à des côtés diamétralement opposés d'un trou axial borgne 27 sont pré- vus dans le raccord et se prolongent au travers de celui-ci;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
De façon que le liquide puisse couler entre les passages non axiaux 13 et 35 en alignement et entre le pas- sage auxiliaire incliné 17 et le passage non axial 26 ,le , disque 22 a deux trous 35 et 36 qui sont situés à des côtés diamétralement opposés du trou central 32 et communiquent respectivement avec les poches 16 et 34; cependant , en vue de régler le passage du liquide , le disque est pour- vu de lobes d'une pièce 37 et 38 qui s'étendent respeoti- vement sur les trous 35 , 36, et ferment partiellement ces derniers (cf.figure 2);
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
Pendant le retour de la membrane à sa forme de voûte ,la pression dans la voûte est réduite par suite de l'accrois- sement consécutif de volume de l'espace entre la membrane et le corps de soupape, Des que cette diminution de pres- sion commence , le lobe 38 est remis en contact avec la face 10a du corps et ferme le passage incliné auxiliaire et em- pêche tout retour de liquide depuis le passage 26 du rac- oord ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

The present invention relates to pumps and particularly relates to manually operated pumps suitable for delivering controlled amounts of a liquid (such as liquid fuel) from a reservoir to the intake system, for example. an internal combustion engine, so as to facilitate cold starting of the engine,
The main object of the present invention is a pump of reduced dimensions and of robust construction, economical to manufacture, easy to assemble and efficient from the operating point of view,
In accordance with this invention,
A pump comprises an elastic diaphragm provided transversely in a frame between the adjacent ends of two members oo-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
axial reciprocating the diaphragm being designed to flex so as to force liquid into the interior of the frame, and to expel it through inlet and outlet passages respectively, controlled by a valve.
Preferably, the membrane has the shape of an arch; one of the reciprocating members is constituted by a rigid rod controlled by a spring, which extends inside the arch, and pushed towards the ooncave surface of the top. of this vault, while the other of these members is constituted by a plunger which touches the convex surface of the top and extends outwards from the frame in such a way that it can be moved manually to bend the diaphragm and move the rod against the action of the spring.
The stem may be part of a spring-loaded valve which is provided in an axial main passage formed in a valve body transversely seated in the frame, the valve being spring-actuated in its closed position, at which play may exist between the rod and the top of the diaphragm when the pump is not working,
The valve body may also be provided with a non-axial passage, a closure disc may be trapped between the frame away from the diaphragm, and a pipe fitting which is also provided transversely in the frame, may be provided. 'be provided with two passages communicating respectively with the axial and non-axial passages of the body, via holes in the disc,
the flow of liquid between each pair of passages being regulated by a lobe provided in the corresponding hole in the disc

and adapted. by variations in the pressure of the liquid, cover and close one of the two passages or to be swung into a corresponding pocket in the body or fitting so as to terminate the closure in question, the two pockets being located on opposite sides of the disk.
So that the invention can be understood more easily and put into practice, reference will be made to the accompanying plan. or :
Figure I is a sectional elevation of a pump, and
FIG. 3 is a detailed view showing certain constituent parts of the pump, in perspective.
The pump shown in Figure 1 comprises a frame which consists of a cup-shaped metal frame, with an opening 2 at the center of its base, and a cup-shaped liner 3 as well. The lining is shallower than the carcass and its base, in the center of which is provided a threaded opening 4, rests on the base of the carcass so that the edge of the lining is spaced from the edge of the carcass; the two openings are in concentric relation and a threaded nozzle protrudes the opening of the carcass and can be threaded into the opening of the liner.
The bore of the nozzle is worked such that its end leading to the interior of the gasket is of a larger diameter and receives the head 6 of a plunger 7 which forms a slip fit. - sant in the bore in question and extends beyond the nozzle to the outside of the frame.
A membrane 8 in the form of an arch, made of rubber or of a similar elastic material allowing the membrane to resume its arch shape when any bending or deformation force exerted therein disappears, is provided with a lip or a peripheral edge 9
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
all around its outer periphery. The membrane opens the opening of the gasket, the rim rests on the edge of said gasket and the top of the arch is placed inside the gasket in contact with the head of the plunger.
A cylindrical valve body 10 is housed in the casing and is provided around one end thereof with an outer shoulder II which rests on and around the side of the rim of the diaphragm opposite the edge. packing, so that the rim is trapped and compressed between the shoulder and the edge in question and that a gasket is formed between the packing, the membrane and the valve body; the opposite end of the body fits exactly into the hollow of the membrane.
Two passages, namely an axial passage 12 and a non-axial passage 13, pass through the valve body, the axial passage being folded down adjacent to the body and located in the diaphragm to form a valve seat 14 and a groove or part 15 of the valve. passage of reduced diameter, while the non-axial passage opens into a pocket 16 located in the face 10a of the body and adjacent to the opening of the carcass. An inclined auxiliary passage 17, going from the face 10a in question to the diametrically opposite side of the axial passage, towards the pocket 16, gives in said axial passage to the side of the valve seat remote from the top of the membrane.
To adjust the flow of liquid in the axial and auxiliary passages, a cylindrical valve 18, of section smaller than that of the large diameter part of the axial passage, is provided in this passage part; an oo-axial rod 19, with a section smaller than. oelle of groove 15, comes from one end of the valve, @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
passes into the throat, and goes inside the membrane where it ends away from the top of the membrane; a spring washer 20 provided around the base of the stem is designed to press against the valve seat 14, and a co-axial end 21 extends from the opposite end of the valve to the face 10a of the body.
A disc 22, also made of rubber or a similar material, is compressed between the face 10a of the body and the adjacent end face 23a of a pipe connector 23, by rotating the edge of the casing 1 towards inside behind a shoulder 24 provided on and around the connection in question * -
Two non-axial passages 25 and 26 located at diametrically opposed sides of an axial blind hole 27 are provided in the fitting and extend therethrough;
to ensure that the fitting is mounted in the frame of the frame with the passage 25 in alignment with the non-axial passage 13 in the valve body, and the passage 26 concentric with the end of the solid-state auxiliary passage 17 which opens into the valve body. face 10a, a pin 28 (see figure 3) provided on this faoe, passes through a hole 29 in the disc 22 and engages in a blind hole 30 provided in the end face 23a of the connector in question.
The blind axial hole 27 has the same diameter as the large diameter portion of the axial passage in the valve body and opens into the face 23a of the fitting, the disc 22 having a central hole 32 which communicates with the adjacent ends. passage and hole in question.
A partially compressed coil spring 33, housed in the axial blind hole of the fitting, passes into the axial passage where it surrounds the end 21 and pushes the washer 20 into contact with the seat 14, thus preventing the passage of liquid into the chamber. groove 15 between the interior of the vault
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of the diaphragm and the large diameter passage portion and locating the tip of the valve stem 19 away from the inner or concave surface of the top of the diaphragm.
A pocket 34 which may be of identical dimensions to those of the pocket 16 is provided in the end face 23a of the connector and the passage 36 of the connector opens into the base of the first of these pockets,
So that the liquid can flow between the non-axial passages 13 and 35 in alignment and between the inclined auxiliary passage 17 and the non-axial passage 26, the disc 22 has two holes 35 and 36 which are located at diametrically sides. opposite the central hole 32 and communicate respectively with the pockets 16 and 34; however, in order to regulate the passage of the liquid, the disc is provided with one-piece lobes 37 and 38 which extend respectively over the holes 35, 36, and partially close the latter (see figure 2 );
the lobe rests on the face 10a of the body on the end of the auxiliary inclined passage so as to prevent a flow between the passage 26 and the auxiliary passage in question, but it is designed to rock inside pocket 34 to allow this flow; similarly, the lobe 37 rests on the face 23a of the fitting on the end of the passage 25 in order to prevent a flow between the non-axial passage 13 and the passage 25, but it is intended to tilt inward pocket 16 to allow this flow:
To enable the pump to be supplied with liquid from any power source, and to discharge to any desired destination, the ends of the fitting passages remote from the valve body are of a larger diameter and are threaded. so that
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
pipes (not shown), which are respectively in communication with the power source and the destination location, can be connected to the threaded ends.
By manually pushing the plunger 7 inside the frame 1, 3, the top of the diaphragm 8 flexes under the action of the plunger head 6 towards the valve body IO, thus increasing the pressure of the liquid contained in it. the membrane vault.
This increase in pressure and / or the contact of the top of the diaphragm with the tip of the rod 19, moves the valve 18 longitudinally in the large diameter part of the axial passage of the body and in the hole 27 against the 'spring action 33; as a result, the washer 20 is moved from the seat 14 and the liquid is able to flow from the interior of the arch into the clearance between the stem and the throat wall and the annular clearance between the valve and the wall of the part. large diameter passage, and in the auxiliary passage- inclined area 17.
Admission of pressurized liquid into the auxiliary passage swings lobe 38 of the disc away from face 10a of the body so that this liquid can flow into pocket 34 and passage 26 of connector, d 'or. it is evacuated to the desired destination, this evacuation continuing for the duration of the working stroke towards the interior of the plunger.
On the other hand, increasing the pressure of the liquid in the membrane arch also increases the pressure of the liquid in the non-axial passage 13 of the body and the pocket 16, whereby the lobe 37 results in of the disc is pushed against the face 23a of the fitting, closing the passage 25 and preventing the discharge of liquid therein.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
By releasing the plunger, the valve is actuated by the spring and puts the washer back in place and closes the groove of the axial passage of the body; during the return movement of the valve in question controlled by the spring, the valve stem acts on the top of the diaphragm, partially returning the latter to its initial arch shape, and pushes the plunger out of the diaphragm bu- selure, the reestablishment of the arch shape and the final court - se of the diver to the outside being caused by the elasticity inherent in the material constituting the membrane.
As the diaphragm returns to its arch form, the pressure in the arch is reduced as a result of the consequent increase in volume of the space between the diaphragm and the valve body, as soon as this decrease in pressure This begins, the lobe 38 is brought back into contact with the face 10a of the body and closes the auxiliary inclined passage and prevents any return of liquid from the passage 26 of the connector;
then, as soon as the pressure in the vault falls below the pressure prevailing in the other passage 25 of the connector, the lobe 37 of the disc is tilted into the pocket 16 away from the face 23a of the connector, and the liquid flows from the feed, into the passage in question 25, the pocket and the non-axial passage of the body, and enters the arch before being discharged from the pump by a subsequent depression of the plunger.
By providing the pocket 16 in the face 23a of the connector instead of the face 10a of the body and the pocket 34 in the face of the body instead of the face of the connector, and by reversing the connections of the passages of the connector to the power supply. tion and destination the liquid would be discharged from the interior of the vault in the non-axial passages in alignment and would pass into the vault through the passage 26 of the connecting the auxiliary Inclined passage and the axial passage of the body.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
adjusted by the valve, so that the valve would terminate supply when washer 20 is replaced.
The pump described and illustrated is intended primarily for use when, for example, liquid fuel is intended to be delivered by the pump to the intake system of an internal combustion engine so as to facilitate the starting of the fuel. cold engine. When the pump discharge passages are connected to such a system, and the engine is idling, it is possible that a vacuum will be created in the passage 26 of the connector; this depression would tend to displace the lobe 38. of the face 10 of the body and, in combination with the positive pressure of the liquid supply, to establish in the valve 18 a pressure difference tending to dislodge said valve.
However, since the end faces of the valve which would be subject to this vacuum and pressure are relatively small, the tendency of this pressure difference to dislodge the valve is more than compensated by the spring 33. In addition, by As a result of the positive pressure, which exists in the arch of the membrane, there is no tendency for the membrane to sag and disturb the valve in a way that would allow the liquid to leak from the interior. from the vault to the evacuation passages.
If the alternate pocket arrangement were adopted such that the aligned, non-axial passages 13, 25 would be converted to discharge passages, and the main axial passage 12, the inclined passage 17, and the non-axial passage 26 would be converted to intake passages, and if the pump were to operate under these conditions, the vacuum created in the discharge passages would be transmitted to the interior of the arch and could cause sagging
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
partial membrane due to the relatively large membrane area subject to this depression. and this partial collapse could disturb the valve in such a way that, despite the action of the spring.
Communication would be established between the feed and the interior of the arch with consequent fluid leaks in the engine intake system.
On the other hand, this alternative arrangement of the pockets is preferable when, for example, the liquid is admitted to the pump under considerable pressure (of the order of 50 lbs per square inch = 3.5 kgs / cm20, and it is desirable that a pressure of this value not remain constantly inside the vault. In these circumstances, given the clearance which exists between the rod 19 and the top of the membrane, the valve returns to its position before the plunger 7 completes its return stroke and while the membrane resumes its arch shape.
Replacing the valve closes the flow of liquid towards the interior of the dome and the supply pressure, combined with the action of the spring, pushes the valve into its seat so that, during the final part of the diver's return stroke and the restoration of the arch shape, the pressure in the arch is reduced. In addition, if a vacuum were created in the arch, the combined action of the supply pressure and the spring would be sufficient to withstand the disturbances of the valve due to partial collapse of the diaphragm.
It will be appreciated that, whatever the disposition! - tion adopted for the pockets, by pressing the plunger up to the limit of its working stroke inwards each time the pump is operating, a constant volume of liquid can be evacuated from the pump during each maneuver.
