<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

The present invention relates to a pipe produced by means of a succession of rigid elements connected by articulations so as to form an articulated assembly. By arranging at least three articulations arranged in perpendicular planes, it is possible to make one end of the articulated pipe forming the subject of the present invention take all the possible positions while the other end of said pipe remains fixed. . The uses of such an articulated pipe are multiple. By way of nonlimiting example, the use of such a

articulated pipe for removably connecting a filling ramp to the tap of a compressed gas cylinder.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings illustrates schematically a ramp 1 carrying the valves 2 with branches 3. In the illustrated example, the ramp is shown with two branches, but it is obvious that the ramp can have several. derivations, just as it is irrelevant for the object of the invention that the bypass 3 consists only of the end of a pipe, a mouth of a reservoir, etc. One of the ends of the articulated pipe forming the subject of the present invention is connected to the pipe 3. The connection is made in an absolutely sealed manner while allowing the end 4 of the articulated pipe to rotate freely in one direction or the other around its longitudinal axis. The sealed and articulated connection used will be described in more detail below.
The rigid branch 4 is provided with an elbow 5 at 902 and the branch of said elbow is connected to the branch bent at 90 of a second rigid part 6 by a sealed joint 7. This joint which will be described in more detail below allows free rotation in both directions, along their axis of the bent parts. The rigid part 6 is bent at its other end also at 90 and the bent part 8 is connected by means of a sealed articulation 9 to a bent part 10 of another rigid part 11. The articulation 9 is of the same type as the articulation 7 and it allows free rotation in both directions, along their axis, of the bent parts 8 and 10.
The rigid part 11 is bent at its other end at 902 and this bent part 12 is connected by means of a sealed articulation 13 to the part bent at 90 14 of a part 15. The articulation 13 is of the same type. as the joints 7 and 9 and allows free rotation in both directions, along their axis, of the bent parts 12 and 14. The part 15 is terminated by a connector 16 which will be described later and which fits tightly into the filler pipe 17 of the cylinder 18. The tight fitting 16 terminating the part 15 of the articulated pipe allows the free
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
rotation of said pipe around its axis.
Thanks to the various sealed joints connecting the rigid parts, the whole of the pipe is articulated in such a way that, one end of the pipe having a fixed position, the other end can freely occupy any position. .
In the example illustrated in fig. 1, where two identical pipes have been shown, it can be seen that from the ramp 1, it is possible to connect, by means of the articulated pipes forming the subject of the present invention, cylinders 18 and 18 'located at different heights. If, on the other hand, the cylinders 18 and 18 'were not located in front of the connecting pipes 3 of the ramp 1, it would be sufficient to rotate the part 4 of the pipe around its axis to bring for example the articulation 7 in a vertical plane which would allow the rigid part 6 to be moved in a horizontal plane.
Thanks to the articulations allowing the free rotation of the rigid parts in different planes it is possible to make the various rigid parts take any positions and consequently to bring the end 15 of the pipe to any desired location. to allow connection to a cylinder. The length of the rigid elements 4, 6, 11, 15 is arbitrary. Just as the number of joints may be greater than that described, at least three are needed to allow all positions in space to be reached.
The articulations 7, 9 and 13 are sealed articulations allowing free rotation of the elements connected around their axis. Various embodiments are possible without departing from the scope of the present invention. However, in FIG. 2 there is schematically illustrated a joint exhibiting maximum efficiency.
The end 19 of one of the rigid pipes to be connected is connected in a sealed manner, for example by welding or brazing to a pipe 20 provided with an annular shoulder 21 and a groove 22.
The borehole 23 of the pipe 20 extends the conduit of the pipe 19. In the groove 22 is housed a strand 24, made of rubber, natural or.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
synthetic, the dimensions of which are such that said strand can move slightly in the groove and that the outer diameter of the strand is slightly greater than the outer diameter of the tubing 20. The end 25 of the other pipe to be connected is connected so waterproof, for example by welding or soldering to a part 26 in the form of a nozzle, provided on the outside with a thread.
The part 26 is provided with a recess 27 which extends the conduit of the pipe 25. The internal diameter of the recess 27 is established so that the tubing 20 slides there with gentle friction, while the rubber strand 24 is slightly clamped therein. . By tightening the rubber strand 24 crashes slightly and fills the annular groove 22. To ensure the connection between the parts 20 and 26, a ring 28 is slipped around the part 20. This ring 28 has an annular shoulder 29 which s 'rests behind the annular shoulder 21 of the tubing 20. Equipped with an internal thread, the ring 28 can be screwed onto the part 26 so as to ensure the connection.
The two pipes 19 and 25 are thus firmly connected, the fluid passes freely from the pipe 19 into the borehole 23 of the part 20, into the recess 27 of the part 26 and from there into the pipe 25. The two pipes can freely rotate in both directions around their axis and yet the seal is perfectly sealed. Indeed, if in the pipes and the joint circulates a pressurized fluid, the latter will be stopped by the rubber strand 24 and the higher the pressure, the more the rubber strand will be pressed against the side walls of the groove 22 this which will cause an extension of the strand which will apply all the more firmly against the recess 27.
The fittings used to connect the articulated pipe, Box to the ramp 1, or to the cylinder 18 are made as shown in section in fig.1. The end 30 of the pipe is connected in a sealed manner, for example by welding or brazing to a tubular part terminated by a conical part. In the
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
conical surface of the end a groove has been cut, in which a groove is housed a rubber strand. The tubular part in question is introduced into the cylindrical recess of a part integral with the ramp or the cylinder, cylindrical part whose bottom is conical.
The taper of the two parts present is identical and calculated so that the rubber strand is applied with a slight pressure against the female cone of the part secured to the cylinder or the ramp. A threaded part in the form of a ring, optionally provided with means allowing tightening by hand, is slipped onto the tubular part, shoulders arranged both on the outside of the tubular part and on the inside ... of the threaded ring allow to keep the tubular part firmly together and the part integral with the cylinder or the rail, The principle of sealing is the same as for the joints described above,
just as the rotation of part 30 about its axis remains possible despite the tightening of the ring and while maintaining a tight seal thanks to the rubber strand.
Variations of executions are possible without departing from the scope of the present invention. It is in particular possible to use other sealed joints or else to have sealed joints, arranged to be able to rotate freely in different planes and to make the connection ends immobile.
