<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Elle comprend, mise à part cette disposition principale, certaines autres dispositions, qui s'utilisent de préférence en même temps (mais qui pourraient, le cas échéant, être utilisées isolément), et dont il sera plus explicitement parlé ci-après, notamment : - une deuxième disposition, -- relative aux moyens pour fabriquer un organe souple du genre en question à partir de feuilles ou couches de matière plastique vulcanisable, notamment comportant une armature en tissu câblé comme ci- dessus, -- consistant : à former un manchon par enroulement d'au moins une couche telle que susvisée et crue sur un mandrin cylindrique, (la direction des fils de l'armature, si.elle existe, faisant notamment avec les génératrices de ce cylindre un angle non droit.et de préférence petit ou nul);
puis à introduire dans ce manchon un noyau rigide, de préférence démontable en plusieurs morceaux, dens la surface latérale duquel a été prévue à gorge à profil de préférence arrondi ; puis à faire épouser audit manchon la forme de ce noyau par enfoncement de la couche plastique qui le constitue dens ladite gorge, obtenu notamment par l'enroulement progressif dans celle-ci d'un câble tendu;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Elle vise plus particulièrement certains modes d'application, ainsi que certains modes de réalisation, desdites dispositions ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

The invention relates to flexible members of the type of flexible or elastic bellows, in particular helical, such as those used for the pneumatic suspension of vehicles or other assemblies, for the connection of pipes, for the protection of joints, etc., and to manufacturing processes for these organs.
Its aim, above all, is to make said organs and processes such that they respond better than to date to the various desiderata of practice, in particular from the point of view of resistance and flexibility.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It consists mainly in constituting an organ of the type in question from at least one flexible excavation of "rubberized cord fabric", that is to say essentially constituted by a chain of parallel wires or cables offering a high tensile strength and joined together using a rubbery material or the like.
It includes, apart from this main provision, certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time (but which could, where appropriate, be used in isolation), and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular: - a second arrangement, - relating to the means for manufacturing a flexible member of the type in question from sheets or layers of vulcanizable plastic material, in particular comprising a reinforcement of cabled fabric as above, - consisting of: forming a sleeve by winding at least one layer such as above and believed on a cylindrical mandrel, (the direction of the wires of the reinforcement, if it exists, making in particular with the generatrices of this cylinder a non-right angle. and preferably small or null);
then in introducing into this sleeve a rigid core, preferably removable into several pieces, dens the side surface of which has been provided with a groove preferably rounded profile; then in making said sleeve conform to the shape of this core by pushing in the plastic layer which constitutes it in said groove, obtained in particular by the progressive winding therein of a taut cable;
then, optionally, in preparing flanges at the ends of the bellows formed, by replacing those of the aforesaid pieces, arranged at the ends of said core, by suitable end pieces,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
and finally to vulcanize the assembly maintained in shape and to proceed to its demolding *
It relates more particularly to certain modes of application, as well as certain embodiments, of said provisions;
and it targets more particularly, and this as new industrial products, the organs of the type in question comprising the application of these same provisions as well as the special elements, devices and tools specific to their establishment and the assemblies, in particular the systems. suspension and damping system for vehicles, equipped with similar components.
And it can, in any event, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawings, which supplement and drawings are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Fig. 1 of these drawings shows a sheet of rubberized cord fabric for forming a bellows according to the invention.
Figs. 2 to 5 show, the first in a perspective view, the others in axial longitudinal section, four successive stages of the manufacture of a bellows according to the invention from the sheet shown in fig 1. .
Figs. 6 and 7 show, in perspective views respectively whole and cut along a diametral plane, two bellows made in accordance with the invention.
The rod 8, finally, is a view with partial cut away of a variant in which the bellows is of revolution and comprises two layers of rubberized cord fabric.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
According to the invention, and more especially according to those of the modes of application, as well as according to those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that there has been to grant preference, proposing to establish elastic bellows, this is done as follows or in a similar fashion.
For the constitution of such a bellows, at least one sheet of "rubberized cord fabric" as used for making the tire casings is used.
Such a fabric is understood to mean that consisting essentially of a chain of "threads" (that is to say threads proper, or ropes, cables, etc.) parallel, brought together almost contiguously, exhibiting a large- tensile strength in the longitudinal direction and joined to each other by means of a continuous web of rubber encasing them, a web applied raw on them by any suitable process such as rolling, friction, sprinkling of solution, etc. , capable of being vulcanized after suitable forming.
The weft of such a fabric is thin or even non-existent.
The threads which constitute it can be of any desirable textile or metallic material.
It is known that such a rubberized cord fabric (which will be referred to more simply by "fabric" hereinafter, for the clarity of the description) is, in the uncured state, very deformable in the direction transverse to the warp threads. and practically undeformable in the direction of these threads.
This fabric is therefore susceptible to any forming based on its transverse extensibility but not subjecting the warp threads to any appreciable elongation, and in particular
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
it lends itself well to the manufacture of helical bellows.
We will indicate in what follows a preferred embodiment, but of course not limiting, of a helical bellows thus constituted.
To this end, a sheet 1 (FIG. 1) is first cut of raw "fabric", that is to say for which the rubber has not yet undergone the vulcanization treatment, sheet whose width 1 is equal to the perimeter 2 Òr of a cylindrical mandrel 2 (Fig. 2) of 'radius r, and the length L of which is substantially' equal to that which is desired for the length of the bellows completed during its maximum extension.
This sheet is cut in the form of a parallelogram, one of the sides 3 of which is parallel to the direction of the warp yarns 4 and the other side 5 of which, oriented in the direction of the width 1, forms with the transverse direction of these wires have any angle Ó, but which is preferably less than 45 or even zero, and which can be advantageously provided such that these wires are located, in the finished bellows, perpendicular to the helix materialized by this bellows.
Said sheet is wound on the mandrel 2, so as to constitute a sleeve 6 (FIG. 2), each of the son 4 then forming an angle Ó with the direction d of the generatrices of this sleeve.
If it is desired to increase the transverse rigidity of this sleeve or for any other reason, several layers (for example at least one pair of layers) of "fabric" can be juxtaposed, advantageously by crossing the warp threads of the two layers of fabric. 'the same pair so for example that @@ rs directions are two by two inclined from the same
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
angle, but in the opposite direction, on the generator of the sleeve (case of a bellows of revolution) or on the normal to the propeller to materialize (case of a helical bellows): the bellows will then have no preferred direction at the point in view of its resistance, in particular to tearing.
Such a bellows will be described in more detail below with reference to FIG. 8.
After removing the sleeve 6 from the mandrel 2, by longitudinal sliding and / or swaying, a helical bellows is shaped with it as follows:
There is provided a cylindrical core 7 (fig. 3) of revolution, the side surface of which has been shaped in the form of a helix, the inclination of the turns of the helix on the axis da being equal to Ó and the axial profile of this helix being rounded in the form of a sinusoid or the like, for example in a curve obtained by means of two arcs of a circle oriented one towards the outside and the other towards the inside of the core and connected by a rectilinear portion tangent to these arcs: by describing the helix, the innermost arc of a circle thus generates a helical groove 8.
The core 7 is disassembled in a longitudinal direction in three pieces, the two end pieces 9 and 10 being able to be immobilized with respect to the central piece by means of keys 11 and 12 suitable for being engaged in corresponding recesses of a shaft 13 integral with the central piece of the core 7.
. The whole of the core 7 is introduced into the cylindrical sleeve 6 of raw "fabric", if necessary sprinkled with talcum powder, said introduction being advantageously facilitated by mounting said core of a cone or an olive 14 at the end.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
It is preferably arranged so that the internal diameter of the sleeve 6 is appreciably less than the external diameter of the core, the elastic and plastic transverse extensibility of the raw "fabric" lending itself to this operation *
When said fitting is completed, the sleeve 6, completely covering the central piece of the core 7 (more simply referred to below as "central core 7"), slightly overhangs the left piece 9 for example (fig.
3) and much more on the other piece 10, its length L having been chosen - to allow these overflows *
Once this has been done, a cable 15 with a diameter such that it can fill the bottom of this groove, taking into account this the corresponding key 11, is hooked in the bottom of the helical groove 8 of the left piece 9. thickness of the "fabric" that it must push into it.
By then rotating the whole of the core 7 around its axis relative to the cable 15 and by keeping the latter taut along the tangent to the helix (FIG. 4), it is constrained, by the winding of the latter at the bottom of the aforesaid helical groove 8, the sleeve 6 to come to match the shape of this groove.
This operation is repeated several times, since the raw rubber is not completely plastic.
The deformation imposed on the sleeve corresponds to a shrinkage thereof, given the inextensibility of the layers of fabric in the direction of the direction of the threads: the end of this sleeve 6, which protrudes over the piece 10 on the right, professes therefore slowly to the left while shortening.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
After several successive windings and unwinds, the sleeve 6 completely matches the bottom of the helical groove 8. At this time, each of. son 4 is substantially perpendicular to the general direction of the fictitious turns of the sleeve 6 which is now helical due to the inclination Ó of this direction on the longitudinal axis da of the sleeve.
A suitable device for holding the fabric in place over the entire length of the cable is then substituted for the cable 15. central core 7, device for example constituted by two half-ooquilles 16a and 16b (FIG. 5) having an interior surface complementary to that desired for the final exterior surface of the bellows.
Once these two half-shells put in -) lace, which tightens the central part of the bellows against the central core 7, the keys 11 and 12 are removed and the end pieces 9 and 10 are unscrewed for them. release the ends of the bellows: we can then shape these ends, which protrude outside the half-shells 16a and 16b, in the form of flanges, for example by folding the left end (fig. 5) inwards by 17 against the edge of the central core 7, and the other end towards the outside at 18 against the edge of the half-shells 16a and 16b.
Ends 19 and 20 can then be threaded onto the shaft 13 and vigorously applied against the flanges 17 and 18, holding them, for example using the same keys 11 and 12 as previously.
The assembly thus shaped in this way is then placed in an autoclave with a view to its vulcanization.
After demolding, a helical elastic bellows 21 is obtained as shown in FIG. 6, having at rest
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
a length equal to that of the central core 7.
Of course, instead of shaping the ends of the bellows 21 in the form of flanges such as those 17 and 18 shown in FIG. 6, they could be shaped in any other way, for example in the form of rings-22 (fig. 7), - trunks; cone, etc. .., taking into account that the core 7 must be able to be released from the bellows completed by simple unscrewing.
The advantages of the helical bellows obtained are, among others, the following:
It is easily deformable'-in the direction of the axis of the helix, either by traction or by compression, its deformation being practically limited only by the complete extension of the tissue under traction and by its crushing with turns contiguous to compression, which makes it possible to achieve with such a bellows large relative deflections.
Moreover, the axis of this bellows can be very easily bent in all directions of space, since this curvature corresponds to shortenings on one side and to elongations on the other side, turns of the l helix in the longitudinal direction, forces to which the "fabric" used resists particularly well.
Finally, as regards the purely transverse deformations of the turns, namely their swelling, expansion or transverse compression, the bellows obtained is very little deformable, and this less so as the number is greater, of juxtaposed layers of fabric whose directions of the warp threads are advantageously crossed in pairs.
Following what, and whatever the mode of
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
adopted embodiment, we finally obtain a helical bellows whose implementation and advantages result sufficiently clearly from the description which has just been made so that it is unnecessary to dwell on them, subject.
A particularly advantageous mode of application of such a bellows is that in which it is used in a vehicle pneumatic suspension, the internal capacity of this bellows then being sealed and filled with a. fluid under pressure.
As goes without saying, and as it follows moreover already from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to those of its modes of application, nor to identifies embodiments of its various parts, having been more particularly considered; it embraces, on the contrary, all the variants thereof, in particular those where the bellows is not helical, but of revolution.
In the case where a single layer of "fabric" is used for a bellows of revolution, the angle Ó of FIGS. 1 and 2 is advantageously zero (- starting from a rectangle of fabric) and, in this case, each linear element or wire of the finished bellows is contained in a meridian plane. On the other hand, when, as in the embodiment of FIG. 8, two layers 5 and 6a (or several pairs of layers) are used to produce a bellows of revolution, the threads 4 of a layer 6 advantageously form, at each point, an angle with the direction of the longitudinal axis da of the bellows, while the son 4a of -l'autre layer 6a make the angle - ss / 2, at the corresponding point, with the same axis da.
This gives a bellows with excellent tear resistance and without any preferred direction.
