<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
REVENDICATIONS.

The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of insulating elements in plates or in shells such as are used for the insulation of walls, pipes, etc., these elements being constituted by mineral wool, such as than slag wool or glass wool, and in which the fibrous material is added with a synthetic liquid binder, shaped, then dried and cooled.
The object of the invention is to obtain an element intended for insulation, having a high insulating power and resistant to high temperatures. According to the invention, the addition of synthetic material to the fibrous material is obtained by placing the latter in a mold with perforated walls which is then immersed in the liquid mass, in such a manner that the synthetic material impregnates the fibrous material only superficially. Treating the fibrous material in this way largely maintains the air pockets contained therein, resulting in a highly insulating body. A suitable synthetic material is melamine-formaldehyde resin.
It appeared that by immersing the molds previously filled in the dispersion or solution of synthetic material, the latter accumulates more in the outer layers of the fibrous material than in the deep layers, and this not only because of the filtering action of the fibrous material, but also by the effect of electrical phenomena of a static nature. In fact, the fibrous material is still completely impregnated with the liquid. It is for this reason that it is advantageous to allow the impregnated material to drain before drying and hardening, which however requires considerable time. The object of the invention is to avoid this draining, or in any case to limit the duration thereof and thus to considerably accelerate the drying.
In accordance with the invention, the fibrous material impregnated with synthetic material is centrifuged while it is still in the perforated mold, after which it is dried and cured.
As a result of this rapid rotation, the excess liquid is driven from the fibrous body, while the centrifugal force drives the liquid contained in the body from the inside to the outside, so that the synthetic material accumulates. in the outer layers where it constitutes a reinforcing element. As the synthetic material is thus withdrawn from the core of the fibrous material, the insulating power of which it would reduce, the fact of driving the synthetic material from inside the body increases the insulating power. Furthermore, the interior of the insulating elements thus obtained, the interior which comes into contact with the object to be insulated, is made resistant to high temperatures, since otherwise the synthetic material would decrease this resistance to heat of the fibrous material.
For the manufacture of insulating shells for the insulation of pipes, one can proceed as follows; passes slag wool, that is to say the fibrous material obtained by injecting steam into a mass of molten slag, this wool being placed on a conveyor belt, between two rollers, and some pressure is applied to compress this material into a continuous layer about 5mm thick.
This layer is wound around a core so as to constitute a shell of the desired thickness which is then introduced into a perforated metal mold, after which the assembly is immersed in the appropriate synthetic material, heated for example to 80 ° C. The consistency of this synthetic material bath is such, and the stay of the element in this bath is so short, that the material in question impregnates only the surface layer of the fibrous material, so that the loose structure of this is preserved and a purely superficial treatment is obtained. The element is left to dry in its mold at a temperature

of 200 C for example, after which it is subjected to cooling.
Preferably, however, the excess liquid will be removed from the fibrous material by contrifuging. For this purpose, one or more molds filled with impregnated fibrous material can be clamped in a suitable rotating head or device, so that a hollow is formed around the axis of rotation. Hot air or another hot gas which passes through the layer of fibrous material in the direction of centrifugal force and will be expelled through the perforated wall of the mold, can be blown into this hollow through a channel provided in the rotation head, which has the effect that the fibrous material impregnated with liquid is dried and hardened during the centrifuging operation. The air or gas in question will at the same time entrain liquid from the fibrous material, so that the centrifuging time will be reduced accordingly.
In this way, a surface layer of appreciable hardness is formed, as the resin polymerizes and hardens. Experience has furthermore shown that the fibrous material becomes more porous, which increases its insulating power.
In the manufacture of an insulating element in the form of a shell for the insulation of pipes, the cylindrical core used for winding can be removed, after having immersed the perforated mold in the dispersion or the solution of synthetic material, which will have the effect of accelerating the drying and curing by injection of air or other hot gas during the centrifuging operation.
When, instead of manufacturing shell-shaped elements, it is desired to obtain flat plates or panels, the layer of fibrous material is stacked to the desired thickness, after which the plate thus obtained is introduced into a mold. perforated flat and subjected to the treatment with synthetic material, whereby a hardened surface layer is also obtained while the fibrous structure of the deep layers continues to exist. The insulating power of such plates is therefore very high.
Flat elements of fibrous material are obtained in flat molds which are assembled so as to constitute a polygonal drum with a view to centrifugal treatment.
