<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
'.fluide remplisse entièrement l'orifice annulaire 14 ménagé sur le bord du disque 12, la face supérieure de 1; paroi .2. situéeà l'intérieur de l'orifice de sortie 14 n'est pas soumise à l'effet de la pression atmosphérique, mais seule- ment à l'effet des ,pressions verticales statique et cinétique présentes à l'embouchure du canal 10.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
'chaoune de ces surfaces, une surface de portée 25 ou un élément analogue puisse être conjugué à une chambre de distribution de la pression.
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

The present invention relates to bearings to which a pressurized fluid, suitably air or a gas, is supplied in the form of a fluid film between the bearing surfaces and supported of the elements of the bearing.
The bearings of this type already known are designed and arranged in such a way that the compression forces acting on the opposite sides of a rotor compensate for each other, so that the resulting load-bearing force becomes negligible.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
One of the aims of the invention is to allow the production of a bearing whose elements located on either side of a rotor generate a considerable resultant force. which opposes the oscillating movements of the rotor.
The invention relates to spherical, cylindrical, planar, convex and concave seating surfaces.
It is embodied in un.palier comprising a pressure distribution chamber, limited by a bearing surface which follows, with a small clearance, the surface of the supported element, this chamber leaving a slight clearance. greater than the clearance present on the adjacent bearing surface ,. the latter set communicating with the atmosphere or with an orifice of a suction device.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the adjacent bearing surface is, in its external part, flared outwards from the surface of 1 '. supported element, so as to create a horn or ejector effect reducing the pressure in this chamber when the clearance tends to increase.
'The mouth of the adduction channel can also be limited by a studied surface' so as to create a constriction effect when the supported element sc approaches this mouth.
The description which follows, given in regared of the accompanying drawings without limitation, will make it possible to better understand the invention.

The f ig. 12 is an end view of a variant of this bearing.
The principle on which the invention is based can be derived from a pump in which the working fluid produces a vacuum or suction effect which ensures the entrainment of the transported fluid.
It has been shown in fig. 1 a modified tube for the application of the invention, in which the conduit or the nozzle 1 through which the working fluid passes is arranged in a channel 2 receiving the transported fluid. The duct 1 and the channel 2 open into a chamber 3 corresponding to the channel (. The common outlet of the proboscis. In this chamber 3, the direction of flow is areaig1é radially. An outlet orifice 4 of the. Chamber 3 follows. the edge of a disc 5 connected to the wall of the channel ±.
The conduit or nozzle 1, the channel and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the wall 5 form a single unit, which is movable relative to the wall 6. A film of compressed fluid sup = carries this assembly, which can be kept floating on the wall 6.
The bearing shown in FIG. 2 has been further adapted for this purpose. The conduit or the nozzle shown in FIG. 1 has been replaced by a corrugation or adduction channel
1Q for the working fluid or fluid under pressure, and the. channel 2 has been deleted * The chamber 3 is limited at the top by a disc 12, which replaces the disc 5 provided in fig. 1.
Depending on this variant of the stage, the whole horn effect can be used to produce suction. in bedroom 3.
When the bearing element 10, 12 is loaded, the chamber 3 decreases in volume and a certain throttling effect is obtained there. The load-bearing force of the bearing element is approximately equal to AP, where A denotes the area of the disc 12 and P the average value of the specific pressure prevailing in the chamber 3. The capacity to absorb shock stresses or impacts of short duration is probably at least equal to twice the static load-bearing force, as shown by several tests, because of the small clearance between the disc 12 and the wall 6-, this clearance being able to be less than 0.1 mm.
The horn or ejector effect appears when there is an increase in the clearance between the disc 12 and the wall 6, for example for a fixed bearing element and a wall 6 under load. Fluid flow from conduit or channel 10 forms a fluid film in chamber 3, the particles of which move redially. Provided that the current of
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
'.fluide fully fills the annular orifice 14 formed on the edge of the disc 12, the upper face of 1; wall. 2. located inside the outlet 14 is not subjected to the effect of atmospheric pressure, but only to the effect of the static and kinetic vertical pressures present at the mouth of the channel 10.
The atmospheric pressure exerted on the underside of the wall 6, inside the outlet orifice 14, exerts a thrust on this wall (when it occupies its optimum position) in the direction of the outlet. bearing element 10, 12.
The disc 12 and the wall 6 may be convex or concave, and may have a spherical, cylindrical, conical, or other shape, adapted to a rotor. According to the invention, it is essential that the two bearing elements arranged diametrically with respect to a rotor can alternately and automatically provide the required bearing pressure in that the pressure generated by a bearing element is compensated by the pressure generated. derived from, the other element in the case where the journaled shaft in the bearing tends to enter into oscillation.
According to the embodiment shown in FIGS. 3 to 6, a sphere 21 is carried by a bowl 22 forming a bearing, to which compressed air is supplied by a duct or channel 23. Another gaseous or liquid pressurized fluid can also be used, for example. steam, water, etc. Compressed air passes from channel 21 into a spherical pressure distribution chamber 24.
Above this chamber 24, the rotor is surrounded by an annular bearing surface 25 of the cup 22. The clearance provided to the right (the surface 25 may be less than 0.1 mm
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
when the sphere is in a floating condition. The surface 25 deviates slightly from the spherical surface at its top, like this. is visible in particular in FIG. 4. When the inlet of the pressurized fluid is interrupted, the sphere is carried by the surface 25 and, in this position, the play in the chamber 24 may be equal to or less than 0.1 mm.
An appropriate balance is obtained between the air pressure, the clearances left, and the weight of the rotor, when the film of air coming from the channel 23 and spreading over the cap of the rotor inside the chamber 24 can escape largely between the bearing surface 25 and the rotor. If at any point the tolerance is too low, air collects in chamber 24, and the pressure in this chamber increases, so that the rotor is lifted.
Otherwise; in the event that the aforementioned tolerance is at present too large, a probing effect occurs in line with the bearing surface 25, so that part of the air accumulated in the chamber 24 is drawn out. of this chamber by the air film, and that independently of the pressure of the air film a suction effect is generated in this chamber. In this way, the rotor is quickly returned to a stable position. The same result is obtained if the tolerance varies on one side of the rotor.
According to figs. 3 to 6, the bearing 22 is equipped with drive members for the rotor 21. When using the rotor for a gyro-compass or the like, this rotor is equipped with a fixed shaft or I'm free 27.
This is also the case when two or more rotors are driven together.

It has been shown in fig. 3 a drive nozzle 30 combined with a regulating valve 31 serving to bring compressed air to the lower part of the rotor, 'into the chamber 24. In this case, a clockwise rotation is obtained (looking at the 'fig, 3). The surface of the rotor can be smooth, grooved, or provided with other proprietary depressions, provided over the whole of this surface or along a narrow annular zone, in order to cooperate with the nozzle or the nozzles in the event that several nozzles open into the chamber 24 or are arranged above the bearing 22, as shown at 32 and 33.
Following this. example, these nozzles are individually controlled and are arranged in a pressure chamber 34, to which compressed air is supplied through a channel or duct 35. The chamber 34 carries an accelerator casing 36, surrounding the upper part of the cylinder. rotor and joined to the bearing 22 on the side of the rotor to which an upward movement corresponds.
The casing 36 is disposed at a distance from the rotor such that the air coming from the bearing 22 and from the nozzles 33 and
32 follows the surface of the rotor, in order to reduce the friction generated by this air.
The notches 40 visible on the pin 6 are distributed in an equdistant manner over a circular zone of the sphere 21.
According to the invention, the shape of the rotor is not limited to a spherical shape, but it can receive a cross section (passing through the axis of the rotor) corresponding to an ellipse, or to a rhombus, or even composed. of various surfaces of revolution located at different radial distances from the rotor shaft, and of a type such that, for
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Any of these surfaces, a bearing surface 25 or the like may be combined with a pressure distribution chamber.
In the example described above, the bearing is formed by a cup-shaped piece which surrounded approximately half of the rotor. However, in some cases it is desirable for the bearing to surround almost the entire rotor. It.is then provided for this purpose a bearing cup, which surrounds the upper part of the rotor and. which can be shaped in the same way as the bearing 22. An annular slot formed between the two bearing elements 22 serves as an exhaust port for the pressurized fluid.
It is obvious that the rotation of the rotor can be ensured around an axis having any desired inclination, for example around a vertical axis, as shown in FIG. 7.
The rotor is supported in the same way as that described with reference to fig. 3, the channel 23 possibly being able to be closed, the nozzle 30 alone sufficient to maintain the pressure in the chamber 24.
Four nozzles 43, the delivery direction of which is horizontal, and which are arranged tangentially to a circumference, the radius of which is substantially equal to half the radius of the rotor, have been shown in fig 7. The pressure chamber 24 and the bearing surface 25 have the shape shown with reference to FIG. 3. Channel 3 shown in the latter figure can be omitted, unless the rotor has a particularly high density. In the annular zone passing opposite the orifices of the nozzles, the rotor is provided with notches of the type mentioned above.
Instead (The acceleration envelope 36, a cap
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
spherical 44 is fixed on the bearing 22 and is united at its upper part with an exhaust port 45. This port 45 of the cap can, if desired, be connected to a suction device, for example to the admission of a pressure source.
It is obvious that the rotor can be driven simply by a rotating magnetic field, or else jointly by field and by the driving elements joined by this field and by the driving elements - indicated above. A rotor of this type driven by a magnetic field is particularly important when it is desirable to achieve: extremely high speeds, which can be precisely determined, for example when photographing short-lived processes.
When the rotor is mounted to rotate about a vertical axis or about an axis of substantial tilt, the shape of the rotor above the bearing cup is irrelevant for mounting. The upper part of the rotor can be given any suitable shape desired, or it can be omitted altogether. Its lower part and the bearing cup can be limited by a surface of revolution the shape of which differs from a spherical surface. The rotor can be constituted by a hollow hemisphere combined with a conduit for the pressurized fluid, the internal surface of this hemisphere being for example spherical, and serving as a bearing cup for supporting a second rotor.
The rotor can also be driven in the manner of a turbine working by reaction, as shown in FIG. 8. In this case, the rotor 50 is hollow, and it is provided with the channels, il¯ arranged auqulairment with respect to its radius.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
Compressed air from chamber 24 is supplied to rotor cavity 53, from which it escapes through channels 51, thereby creating a reactive torque acting on the rotor.
In this case also, the upper part of the rotor may be surrounded by a suction cap such as the cap 44 shown in fig 7, in order to increase the pressure drop and reduce the air resistance.
It has been shown in fig. 9 a cylindrical rotor 55 conjugates to a bearing 56 which is provided with an air intake opening 57 in the form of a slot, extending along the rotor, at its lower part.
The end portions 58 of the rotor have, in the example shown, a hemispherical shape, and have the same radius as the cylindrical rotor. They are mounted, like the aforementioned spherical rotor, with the aid of hemispherical bearing cups serving as thrust bearings. These cups or the bearing 56 may be combined with drive nozzles of the type described above. The rotor 55 shown in fig 9 is particularly suitable as a support for a set of mirrors of small dimensions distributed on its periphery and arranged inside the cylindrical surface. When using a transparent material, the mirojrs can be formed in the mass.
However, at least one of the terminal bearings 58 can be omitted, and the bearing chamber may have a substantially unique shape, coupled with outwardly open terminal portions, as shown in figs. 10 and 11.
A plan is shown in FIG. 10 a connecting element 60 into which the pressurized fluid penetrates, by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
slot-shaped orifice 61, in a pressure distribution chamber 62. Instead of a slit-shaped orifice, a series of smaller orifices can be used, as shown in fig. 10, for the arrival of the pressurized fluid. This is also true with regard to the port 57 shown in FIG. 9. This room 62 is. delimited, in a direction transverse to the shaft 65, by bearing surfaces 63 and, in the longitudinal direction of this shaft, by bearing surfaces 64.
The chamber 62 and the bearing surfaces 63 are arranged according to the same principle as the chamber 24 and the. bearing surface 25 shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, so that the surfaces 64 leave little play with the shaft when the latter is in a floating condition. In fig. 11, which shows at the end the bearing element 60 described above, the bearing is completed by an upper element 66 identical to that shown in FIG. 1.0, so that the shaft 65 is surrounded by the bearing elements, except for two diametrically opposed outlet areas for the pressurized fluid.
As the shaft is moved away from its central position, the compressive force exerted by one bearing member increases, and the compressive force exerted by the other bearing member either decreases or is replaced by a suction effect, as shown. previously. The two bearing elements 60 and 66 are held at a certain distance, for example by means of yokes or other support pieces.
Following the embodiment shown in fig.
12, A shaft 67 is journalled in a bearing composed of four elements 68 established according to the invention, broken down
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
from each other through outlets for the pressurized fluid and coupled with channels or conduits providing for the delivery of the pressurized fluid, as described above. The number of bearing elements and the arc embraced by each of them can be chosen at will.
It is evident that drives can be provided in the bearing elements 60, 61 and 68, in the same way as in the spherical bearings described above, so that the pressurized fluid is used for two purposes.
It is obvious * that a spherical bearing could also be formed by several bearing elements, instead of comprising only one or two elements as indicated previously.
Finally, it will be emphasized that a rotor mounted following. the invention can be trained without using the nozzles described above. This is achieved simply by a certain inclination of the bearing cup, so that the tolerance provided, on one side of the rotor, on the bearing surface 25, is greater than that obtained on the other side. It has been shown in fig. 3 of the locking screws 70 provided under the lower face of the cup 22 and by which the bearing can be inclined in the direction and with the desired amplitude. In this case, the pressurized air must be supplied simply through the central duct or channel 23.
The bottom of the pressure distribution chamber, which is chamber 24 on the end. 3 and chamber 62 in fig, 10, may be provided with thin rods or ribs arranged substantially in the direction of flow of the air film and conforming, if desired, to the shape of the surface of the rotor when the latter rests on the bottom
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
of the bearing, which is the case when the compressed air supply has been interrupted. Rods or ribs divide the pressure distribution chamber into a number of compartments, all of which communicate with the pressurized fluid inlet channels. These ribs are .represented in FIG. 10, and are indicated at -72.
The ribs are connected to the bearing surfaces 63. In this way, the pressurized fluid cannot flow in the longitudinal direction of the shaft, and the load-bearing force of the bearing is increased. If the pressure distribution chamber has a shallow depth, for example 0.05 mm or less, the ribs may be removed and the surface of this chamber may be grooved or embossed, or otherwise treated, in order. to oppose significant friction to the passage of air.
As previously described, the bearing elements according to the invention surround less than half of the rot-gold and are provided with a shallow pressure distribution chamber, to allow an oscillating rotor. to generate essential pressure variations in this chamber. As a necessary condition for the pressure variation, it will be indicated that the chamber must have a shallow depth and must be limited by a supporting surface mounted with a sufficiently small clearance so that a throttling effect is obtained in the chamber. the case where the play tends to decrease as a result of the oscillations of the rotor, and shaped such that a horn effect is obtained in the case where the play tends to increase.
This suction effect reduces the pressure and can create a suction effect which empties, via the polliçule of fluid flowing over
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
the surface of the rotor, the pressure distribution chamber, by discharging the pressurized fluid which is accumulated therein.
In order to prevent the fluid under preession from being discharged through the adduction channel in the event of overpressure in the chamber., As a result of oscillations of the rotor, this channel can be combined with a shut-off or retende valve. . Instead of using a valve of this type, the mouth of the channel or supply line can be limited by a surface protruding above. the lower surface 'of the chamber ;, such that a throttling effect is generated when the rotor approaches this mouth of the adduction channel.
The mating surfaces of the bearing and supported elements can also be plane or convex, and, in this case, ¯ the pressure distribution chamber is also limited by a bearing surface providing a small clearance and designed to generate a trunk effect. The constriction of the flow of fluid at the mouth of the duct is advantageous also when using flat or convex surfaces.
It is evident that the rotor and bearing can be of any suitable material desired, since no contact occurs between their surfaces during operation of the rotor. From a manufacturing point of view, it is preferable to use a material which can be molded.
One field of application in which the device according to the invention is particularly suitable is the study and application of ultra-sonic phenomena.
Although this has not been indicated previously, it is obvious that the bearings can be connected by their pressurized fluid outlet openings to a device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
aspiration, while the adduction channels or conduits may be in communication with the atmosphere. In this case, it is obvious that it is not possible to obtain, between the inlet and the outlet, pressure differences greater than atmospheric pressure, but this assembly is however 'sufficient' in a large number of cases. , to achieve the desired effect.
In what conce.rne the arrangement shown in fig '. 10, it will be indicated that the shaft can be mounted in a fixed position, and can be constituted for example by a rail, the bearing element sliding along this rail at the. like a trolley with skates.
When it is desired to obtain a relative longitudinal displacement between the bearing and the rail, the latter may have a shape in cross section adapted to the aim pursued, and may have a flat, convex or concave surface. ,, The details of realization can be modified, in the field of technical equivalences, without departing from the invention.
