<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
poudre.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>

The present invention relates to a cooler for powdered materials, for example cement, and of the type having a laying compartment which is provided with inlet and outlet ports for the material, the wall or walls of said. compartment being made of a heat-conducting material, its bottom having porous parts to allow the fluidizing air to enter the compartment to
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
powder.
The invention proposes to provide a cooler of this type which is efficient and safe in operation and of relatively simple and inexpensive construction.
According to the present invention) this result is achieved by virtue of the fact that the cooler comprises a device intended to cool the exterior wall surfaces of the powder compartment, that is to say the wall surfaces which are not, with a liquid. swept by the material, the cross sections of the powder compartment through which the material circulates while being cooled, being equal to or substantially equal to the area of the porous portions of the bottom of the powder compartment.
This ensures firstly a uniform fluidization of the material throughout the powder compartment in addition to the agitated circulation which is essential for obtaining the best possible heat transmission and uniform cooling of the material, and secondly that the amounts of heat transmitted to the walls are effectively removed.
According to the invention, the powder compartment can have one or more partitions extending over a significant part of the height of the powder compartment and arranged so that the material is forced to circulate over a maximum distance inside the powder compartment. said compartment from the material inlet to its discharge orifice. A cooler whose powder compartment is for example of rectangular cross section may for example contain two vertical walls dividing said compartment into three sections, the two of which are closest to the inlet of the material communicate with each other. at the lower end of the compartment in the case where the inlet for the material is provided at the ex-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
upper trémlté. On the other hand, the two sections closest to the material discharge opening switch between them at the upper part, while the material discharge hole is provided at the lower end. ower of the compartment. Therefore, the material is forced to flow downward in the section closest to the inlet of the material5 to flow upward in the central section and downward in the section closest to the discharge port which -produces a significant cooling effect.
According to the invention, the powder compartment may comprise one or more cooling chambers, so that the material can be cooled from more than one side, and the surfaces of the walls of the cooling chamber (s) and the cooling chambers. powder compartments which may include sprinkling means. As a result, all of the wall surfaces to be cooled can be constantly supplied with fresh coolant, that is, coolant which has not previously been used for cooling.
Instead of providing a sprinkler device intended to also cool the wall surfaces of the cooling chamber or chambers by means of liquid, the cooling liquid inlet opening according to the invention can be provided at the bottom of the chamber. the cooling chamber while the outlet of said liquid is provided at the upper end of the cooling chamber or chambers and communicates with an element passing the cooling liquid into the sprinkler device intended for sprinkling the surface of the outer wall of the powder compartment By this means,
a little cooling liquid is saved and the cooling of the surface of the outer wall of the powder compartment is nevertheless sufficient in
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
many cases.
To prevent the more or less direct circulation of the material following the practically shortest path from the inlet opening to the outlet of the powder compartment and the insufficient cooling of the material which results therefrom , according to the invention, the material inlet orifice can be placed at the bottom of the powder compartment while the material outlet orifice is located at the upper end of said compartment.
The present invention also relates to a cooling installation comprising two or more coolers as above.
An important feature of the cooling installation according to the invention is mainly the fact that the powder compartments of the coolers are connected in series. Therefore, in connection with a single cooler which is necessary to effect substantial cooling of the material and therefore must be of great height, coolers of suitable low elevation can be applied.
According to the invention, the powder compartments of the refrigerators can communicate with each other two by two via a passage leading from the bottom of the powder compartment of one of the coolers to the bottom of the compartment of the other cooler. This allows the application of the principle that the level of liquids of fluidized substances in communicating vessels is always the same, so that each individual cooler of the installation contributes to the cooling of the material.
The inlet to the passage can be located at the upper end of the powder compartment. This corresponds to the outlet of an individual chiller
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
mounted at the upper end of the powder compartment and helps to prevent direct circulation of material along the practically shortest path from the inlet to the outlet, which is resulting in insufficient cooling of the material.
Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will be corroborated by the description which will follow given with regard to the appended drawings given by way of examples and representing various embodiments of the invention, in which:

Due to the addition of air, the material is brought into a fluid state, or. fluidized, and in combination with the agitation produced simultaneously with the addition of air ensures, firstly, an efficient transport of material to the discharge port 2 located at the lower end of the powder compartment, and secondly, efficient transmission of heat between the material and the walls 2 and 3. The cooling of these walls is effected by water passing through pipes 9 to watering means 10 which spray the outer side of the walls. 2 and 3.
The water then collects in channels 11 located at the lower end of the cooler, to be discharged to the sewer. The flow of material through the cooler is indicated by solid arrows and the flow of cooling water is indicated by dotted arrows. The cooler is provided with an air discharge duct 12 at its upper part.
Identical references are used for the same parts of the following figures.
In the cooling installation shown in Figures 3 and which is constituted by three coolers of the type shown in Figures 1 and 2, these coolers' are connected in series au.moyen passages 13.
The material is introduced into the powder compartment 1 on the left through the upper intake opening 4 and it descends into said compartment. Then, the material flows through the lower passage 13 on the left and rises in the central powder compartment 1, continuing to flow through the upper passage 13 on the right and towards

the bottom in the powder compartment 1 on the right, finally escaping from the system through the discharge opening
7 provided under the powder part on the right. The sprinkler system 9, 10, 11 of the cooling installation corresponds entirely to that shown in Figures 1 and 2.
There is provided in the cooler shown in Figures 5 and 6 a cooling chamber .8. arranged inside the powder compartment 1. The inner and outer walls of the powder compartment are indicated by 2 and 3 respectively. Cooling water is supplied from the bottom of the cooling chamber! 3 and cools the inner wall 2 of the compartment. The cooling water is passed from the top of the cooling chamber 8 through a pipe 9 into the sprinkler.
10 which sprinkles the outer wall of the powder compartment.
In the cooling installation shown in Figures 7 and 8 and which is constituted by two coolers connected in series, each of the powder compartments 1 has an internal cooling chamber 8. The communication passage 13 leads from the bottom. from the powder compartment 1 of one cooler to the bottom of the powder compartment 1 of the other cooler.
The powder compartment 1 inlet port for material * of the left cooler. Or inlet cooler, and the outlet 7 for material from the powder chamber 1 of the right cooler or the outlet cooler, are arranged at the upper end of the coolers, so that the material can flow in a substantially U-shaped path. In this case, the cooling chambers 8, are coolant chambers and in the inlet cooler the coolant is in the direction of the flow and in the outlet cooler
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
in the opposite direction of the flow of matter.
The cooling installation shown in Figure 9 corresponds to that shown in Figure 7. However, the coolers are designated substantially as indicated in Figures 5 and 6, (see Figure 10). Cooling water is supplied from the bottom of the cooling chamber 8, and it cools the inner wall 2 of the powder compartment 1. The cooling water is passed from the top of the powder chamber. cooling 8 by the pipes 3 in the sprinkling device 10 which sprinkles the outer wall 3 of the powder compartment. In the inlet cooler the inlet for the material consists of a pipe 14 introduced into the powder compartment 1 from its upper part and extending almost to the bottom.
The inlet pipe 14 is placed diametrically opposed to the passage 13. communicating with the outlet cooler and the inlet 'of the passage is constituted by a pipe 15 whose opening is located at the upper end of the compartment. powder 1. The inlet pipe 12 its extends above the passage 13 to a height slightly less than that of the discharge port 7 for the material from the outlet cooler.
The presence of lines 14 and 15 ensures that the powder compartment 1 of the inlet cooler is first completely filled with material before this material circulates through the passage into the outlet cooler. Subsequently, line 14 prevents material from flowing directly from the top of powder chamber 1 into line 15. Thus, the cooling effect of the inlet cooler is still fully utilized. This also applies if the inlet cooler is used as the sole cooler. However, in this case, the line 15 can be replaced by an orifice
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
outlet located above and corresponding to the outlet 2 shown in Figure 7.
In figure 10, which is a cross section of the cooling installation according to figure 9, the pipes 14 and 15 are replaced by a vertical partition
16 arranged between the inlet port 4 for the material, mounted in the upper part, and the inlet port of the communication passage 13. As the inlet port 4 has been moved to a position close to the inlet port of the communication passage 13, the partition 16 forces the material to make the longest possible path from from the inlet port 4 to the inlet port of the communication passage.
The outlet cooler is provided with a vertical partition 17 arranged between the outlet opening of the passage 13 and the outlet opening 2 provided next to said outlet opening at the upper end of the re - outlet cooler and this partition 17 has a similar effect.
In the cooler shown in FIG. 11, the powder compartment 1 is provided with a cooling chamber 12 of annular cross section and with walls 2 and 2a. The cooling chamber 19 does not extend to the bottom of the powder compartment. The inlet 4 for the material is provided at the upper end of the powder compartment inside the inner wall 2a of the cooling chamber. The material is thus obliged to circulate under the cooling chamber 19 before entering the external part of annular cross section of the powder compartment, the discharge orifice 2 of which is provided at the upper part.
The internal part of the powder compartment 1 located inside the wall 2a acts similarly to the pipe 14 in FIG. 9.
The coolant inlet port consists of

a pipe 18 introduced through the upper end of the cooling chamber 19 and which almost reaches the bottom of said chamber. Therefore, the water. cooling circulates up through the cooling chamber 19, then through the pipe. ± in the sprinkling device which sprinkles the outside of the wall 1 of the powder compartment.
The circulation of the cooling water is analogous to that of the cooling water shown in Figures 5 and 9, that is to say that the circulation is upwards; This prevents 1) newly added cooling water from flowing along the shortest path directly from the top of the cooling chamber inlet port to its outlet port in pipe 9.
An important advantage of this embodiment of the cooler is that the number of cooling surfaces is increased compared to the previously mentioned coolers.
In the cooling installation shown in Figure 12, which consists of two coolers according to Figure 11 connected in series, the inlet cooler is provided with an intake pipe 15 connecting it through the communication passage 13 to the cooler Release. The inlet pipe 15 acts here analogously to the inlet pipe 15 shown in FIG. 9.
The cooler shown in Figure 13 constitutes a further improvement of the design described with reference to Figure 11. In addition to the cooling chamber 12 of annular cross section and here designed as a spray cooling chamber limited by the walls 2 and 2a , it further comprises a central cooling chamber 20 also designed as a spray cooling chamber and limited by a wall 2b. The

cooling chambers 19 and 20 are connected at their lower ends by means of a radial communication pipe 21. The inlet port 1+ for the material functions in the same way as in figure 11.
In this embodiment of the cooler, one obtains a cooling surface more than in that of the cooler in FIG. 11.
Of course, the invention should not be considered as limited by the embodiments described and shown. felt and is likely to receive various variants within the scope and spirit of the invention. For example one can replace the cooler carried out by means of a sprinkler device by a cooling carried out by means of a cooling chamber filled with liquid, or vice versa, and other combinations of sprinkler devices and Liquid-filled chambers differences from those shown are also possible. In addition, as many cooling chambers as are desirable may be provided in the powder compartment of the cooler.
On the other hand, the amount of water used for cooling the wall (s) of the cooling chamber and that of the outer wall of the powder compartment need not be the same. The powder compartment can be of any cross section, for example circular, elliptical or polygonal.
Although the apparatus and installation according to the invention are intended to be applied for cooling; of liquefied powder materials, there is of course nothing to prevent them being used for heating such liquefied powder material, if desired.
