The process of this invention is carried out under anhydrous conditions using an anhydrous halogen acid.
Anhydrous halogen acids which may be suitable for converting epsilon-caprolactones to epsilon-halogenocaprolac acids are anhydrous hydrochloric acid, anhydrous hydrobromic acid, anhydrous hydrofluoric acid and anhydrous iodine.
The Friedel-Crafts catalysts which have been considered particularly suitable for accelerating the reaction are the Friedel-Crafts catalysts of the metal halide type and in particular: aluminum chloride, ferric chloride, stannic chloride, antimony pentachloride or zinc chloride.
The amount of Friedel-Crafts catalyst required to effect the reaction is between 1 and 5 percent by weight, based on the weight of the lactone.
The reaction time varies from a few hours to a day, depending on the reaction conditions. Preferably, the conditions are adjusted so as to complete the reaction in about four to nine hours.
This invention will be more particularly described in the following examples.

The reaction mixture is diluted with 300 ml of chloroform and washed with water to remove zinc chloride and residual hydrogen chloride gas. The resulting oily layer is distilled by means of a one-plate column to remove solvent and unused starting material, then fractionated by means of a column loaded with glass helices taking the fraction of 113 C under absolute pressure. of 1, 5 mm Hg. The mixture is heated to 160 ° C. and a stream of anhydrous hydrochloric gas is passed through the liquid for a period of 13 hours. During this time, the temperature of the reaction mixture (which refluxes) increases from 160 C to 105 C. An increase in weight of 15 grams is observed after this addition period (36.5% of theory).
The reaction mixture is diluted with 250 ml of tetrachlo. carbon dioxide and washed from zinc chloride and hydrochloric acid. The oil thus obtained is distilled to remove the solvent and the unused starting material. The residue is subjected to fractional distillation under pressure.
