<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for mixing and simultaneously transporting at least two materials
Conveying devices are known consisting of a fixed elongated trough with propeller blades, pallets or propeller liners rotatable about a longitudinal axis.
The transport action thereof is generally good, but the mixing intensity in the available transport length often leaves something to be desired.
The object of the invention is to obviate this drawback, and for this purpose the device according to the invention consists of a fixed elongated trough with screw blades, pallets or screw ribbons rotatable about a longitudinal axis, around which in the trough a concentric peripheral screw conveyor in the form of a screw conveyor. ribbon or portion thereof is provided, the direction of which is opposite to that of the central screw, while an open discharge opening is provided at one end of the trough.
In an embodiment according to the invention, both screws can be fixedly attached to one shaft, the central screw being designed as a screw blade and the peripheral screw tape conveyor. The pitch angles of both screws can be aligned if the screws are independent of each other. may be rotatable, but they are preferably opposed according to the invention. One or both screws may be multi-threaded.
According to the invention, the sense of conveyance of the concentric peripheral screw of the discharge opening is now directed. If material is poured into the trough, the material abutting the wall is not fed to the discharge opening, but in the other sense. As a result, the materials to be mixed become extremely good. mixed before being delivered to the discharge opening by the central screw conveyor. It is therefore not necessary for the discharge opening to be closable, because only when the mixing is complete does the material reach the discharge opening, even when the materials to be mixed have not been deposited simultaneously in the trough.
In the device according to the invention, a second feed to the trough is arranged between the inlet and outlet opening, while by applying the method according to the invention, mixing of the material also takes place between the two feeds.
The invention is described in more detail below with the aid of an exemplary embodiment according to the invention, in which Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section and Fig. 2 a cross-section over one of the inlets along the line II-II in Fig. 1.
A rotatable shaft 2 is arranged in a fixed trough 1.
A single screw blade 3 is attached to this shaft 2, the external diameter of which is considerably smaller than the internal diameter of the trough 1. A peripheral screw ribbon 4 is arranged around this central screw blade 3 and connected to it at the points of contact.
The pitch angle of the screw ribbon 4 is opposite to that of the screw blade 3. According to Figure 1, the pitch of both is equal, but a difference is of course possible, in which case the points of attachment between the two are not after 180 follow.
The ratio between the external diameters of both screws, together with the pitch, determines the efficiency of mixing and transport.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In a preferred embodiment, the useful diameter of the propeller blade 3 is greater than 4 times that of the propeller ribbon 4. Excellent mixing and good transport then take place with the same pitch.
By a suitable choice of the dimensions it is possible, for example, to have the material to be processed practically three times the length of the conveyor before it leaves the screw, whereby a very intimate mixing is obtained.
This is due to the movement of the material in two directions. This results in a very intensive mixing of the material, especially on the contact surface at the outer diameter of the central screw, whereby the sense of transport of a part of the material is reversed.
Especially when material is to be mixed from several feed points, such as at 5 and 6, a mixing already takes place in the part of the screw between the two feeds. This is completely impossible with the well-known single mixing conveyor screws, because all the material moves in the direction of the discharge. is stowed and not, as according to the invention, the material in the first instance from the discharge opening towards the supply opening.
If the screw ribbon 4 is too weak, radial support rods can be fitted to the shaft for support. These can also form palette-shaped parts of the central screw. The supports can also be made so large that the peripheral screw ribbon is actually a second screw blade. However, in order to obtain a properly functioning device in the part which lies within the outer diameter of the central screw 3, there will have to be very large holes, especially at the cutting lines of both blades.
In another embodiment according to the invention, the screw ribbon of the peripheral screw is not complete, but is made of parts which are attached to the outer circumference of the central screw.
Furthermore, according to the invention, there can be no connection between the propeller blade 3, which rotates with the shaft 2 and the propeller ribbon 4, which, with the aid of a drive arm journalled about the shaft 2, is independent of this shaft and at a different speed than this shaft can be driven.
As a result, independent of the pitch angle, the pitch or the diameter, the transport speed and the mixing intensity can be regulated only by varying the rotational speeds.
The mixing conveyor device according to the invention can only be turned empty when the sense of conveyance of the peripheral screw tape 4 is reversed, i.e. is directed from the discharge to the supply.
With continuous mixing, a minimum filling is therefore always required to discharge the mixture. With less than the minimum filling, only mixing and internal transport occur, but no discharge. The mixture does not reach the discharge and is returned to below the supply.
Especially when more than two feeds are provided or when several materials have to be mixed in unequal percentages, a good mixing can be obtained immediately with the device according to the invention.
In the known device the first batch is always practically unmixed.
