<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
# avec rendements faibles - cette teneur est ?or.3 situas par du soufre sous forme de sulfate,
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Même dans le cas de fortes proportions de poussières à pelletiser , ce qui signifie donc une proportion croissante de matières à charger (blende brute/ boulets), le temps de séjour écourté des boulets dans la couche tourbillonnante suffit à éliminer le soufre y contenu car même une influence de faible durée d'une température élevée suffit pour décomposer les sulfates,;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Exemple I.
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

During the operation, in force until now, of kilns-cy- olones loaded with sulphurous ores, such as zinc blende for example, it turned out that if part of the material removed from the layer swirling is satisfactorily roasted, on the other hand the dust evacuated from the oven with the roasting gases and subsequently separated, still shows a high sulfur content, either as a result of faulty roasting due to too long a residence time. short, or also as a consequence of a later sulphation.
In the first case, which is used most of the time with high yields per unit of roasting area, the S-type of the dust consists mainly of sulfur in the form of sulphide; in the second case
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
# with low yields - this content is? or. 3 situas by sulfur in the form of sulphate,
In the subsequent wet metallurgical treatment of the roasted material it is sufficient simply to keep the sulphide content in the material low, some sulphate content being permissible.
This condition can be achieved if the yield per unit area is low enough so that the residence time of the solids in the furnace is sufficient to remove the sulphide.
Not taking into account the low yield, the drawback of this process lies in that very fine materials are sought, given that the low yield also results in low values for the air passing through the grating grid * To guarantee a good swirling of the load in the furnace, one can therefore only consider the treatment of very fine grain materials. Even materials of the order of magnitude of only a few millimeters are unusable.
Given that as a result of storage, the sine blende to be treated agglomerates more or less, it is necessary to provide for the practice of this process a prior treatment.
In addition, the roasted materials produced by this process are very fine and must, for their treatment by thermal processes, be further sintered or agglomerated in one or the other way. The fact that the dust contains sulphate is often also a problem (difficulties during dusting)
Another method of roasting zinc blende according to the principle of the swirling layer provides for the "pelletization" of the blende before charging, in order thus to greatly reduce the proportion of dust and to admit directly to the subsequent thermal process the most of the roasted material, if necessary after being put into briquettes,
The disadvantages of this process lie primarily in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the need for careful manufacture of balls of good mechanical resistance, and then in the relatively low yield, the pelletization leading to a substantial decrease in the reaction surface. Therefore a long residence time must be provided for the roasting balls, especially in the case of slow reacting blends. Difficulties are also frequently encountered in removing Pb and Od from the balls treated in this manner.
We have also already made the proposal to admit in a cyclone oven the material to be grilled unprepared, or pre-dried at 2 to 5% humidity and screened at 0 to 4 mm, and to reintroduce the dust into the oven. swirling layer by means of a cyclone, in order to also roast the sulfur remaining contained in the dust.
However, it turned out in this case that the reintroduction of dust into the oven gives rise to a dust circuit, the proportion of solids of which increases to a maximum value and then remains constant. It results from this increased quantity of dust following the input of new dust from the admitted blende that the dust content of the gas after the separator increases to the same extent as the input of new dust:
The separation of this dust and its reintroduction does not change the conditions either, since as a result a new circuit of limited "capacity" is formed again, the newly introduced dust also passing through this separator and remaining in gas. this part must therefore, if we want to obtain a gas free of dust, 'be separated and no longer be reintroduced into the oven. The conditions for a furnace with two cyclones for example and an electrostatic scrubber following, are shown schematically in Figure 1.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Reference 1 shows the cyclone oven, 2 the swirling layer te ', 3 the feed of the material to be grilled, 4 the evacuation, 5 the dust entrained, 6 the first and 7 the second cyclone, 8 and 9 the quantities dust separated in the two cyclones, 10 an electrostatic scrubber, II the dust separated therein and 12 the dust-free roasting gas,
The disadvantage of the pure and simple reintroduction of dust lies in the fact that, in each case, part of the roasted material is in the form of dust which has an inadmissible sulfur content. either as a result of insufficient roasting, or because subsequent sulphation has taken place.
In addition, the roasted material is too fine to be able afterwards to be treated directly by thermal means: The use of an agglomeration belt is not possible either without prior pelletization.
In order to avoid the aforementioned drawbacks of the processes in question, it is proposed to have recourse to the following working method according to the invention with a view to roasting sulphurous materials, particularly zinc blende. part
The unprepared material, which is available in fine form, partly in the form of grains, is loaded into the furnace with a moisture content whose upper limit value is simply determined by the need for uniform dosage in the loading system. . The dust resulting from the particle size composition and the gas velocity first passes through a primary separator.
The coarse dust collected at this stage, which most of the time still contains a fairly high proportion of sulfur in the form of sulphide, is reintroduced into the furnace by means of an appropriate device (for example a worm screw system) .
The fine dust still remaining in the gas still has a low sulfur content, but also still has a high sulfur content due to sulfation. This dust is also uepa-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
flow of gas in known manner, for example by a second cyclone and an electrostatic scrubber coupled thereto; however, it is pelletized before being returned to the oven. Since this dust contains a high content (up to 8%) of sulfur in the form of sulphate, it can be easily transformed into solid balls with water. or in any case with dilute sulfuric acid.
Even in the case of high proportions of dust to be pelletized, which therefore means an increasing proportion of materials to be loaded (raw blende / balls), the shortened residence time of the balls in the swirling layer is sufficient to eliminate the sulfur contained therein because even a short-term influence of a high temperature is sufficient to decompose the sulphates;
Figure 3 shows the general principle of the process and Figures 3 and 4 show specific formulas for its execution, which prevents the heat necessary for the decomposition of the sulphates from being removed from the vortex layer, which constitutes an advantage particularly in the case of feeding large quantities of balls.
If the balls are loaded at the top of the furnace (Fig. 3) or if the dust collected in the primary cyclone is mixed with them (Fig. 4), the heat required for the decomposition of the sulphates is taken, in all or at least for the greater part, to smoke.
In Figures 2 to 4, the marks 1 to 12 have the same meaning as in Figure I. In cyclone 6, preferably only the coarsest part of the dust (8) is separated and in the cyclone 7, the thinnest part (9). The quantity of dust 9 collected in cyclone 7 is pelletized in plant 13 together with the dust II separated in the electrostatic scrubber, and the balls 14 are returned to the oven. Of course, it is also possible to neglect the dust II and to shovel only the dust 9 or to load the latter at the same time as the dust 8 in the non-pelletized state, and then to pelletize only the dust II.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
By virtue of its content in * Balls: The roasted material withdrawn from the foui- 'in the case of the practice of this process, is suitable either to be treated directly by thermal processes, or when, for example, Cd and Pb still need to be removed beforehand, to be loaded immediately on sintering machines.
If the balls are manufactured without any other binder than water and / or sulfuric acid, they are easily destroyed during humidification, which then constitutes a special advantage when, to the roasting, a metallurgical treatment by wet process:
A particular advantage of this process lies in the fact that it is also suitable for the separation of lead and cadmium from the raw material. In the case of the application of determined operating conditions, that is to say First of all, sufficiently high roasting temperatures and in addition a sufficiently high concentration of SO2, these two metals are successfully volatilized to a large extent, so that a product is collected in the oven,
whose low lead and cadmium content allows direct reduction ,. The technically and economically optimum temperature range for the volatilization of lead and cadmium is between 1050 and 1150 C, the SO2 content of the gas should preferably be at least 10%. The two volatilized metals accumulate in the dust, namely, as was subsequently discovered, for the smallest part only in the dust collected at the mechanical separation plant, dust hereinafter referred to for reason. simply "coarse dust", and for the most part in the fine dust collected with the electrostatic scrubber.
According to the invention, only coarse dust, preferably pelletized, is admitted back into the oven, and the fine dust is discharged separately. As a result of the re-introduction of the coarse dust, the lead and cadmium which it copies are separated from it, and practically all the content of
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
lead and cadmium accumulate in fine dust.
Thanks to the working method according to the invention, on the one hand a roasted product is obtained which is practically free of lead and cadmium, which moreover is practically roasted to death, while on the other hand almost the entire quantity of lead and cadmium in the ore used is found in the fine dust, in which these metals have accumulated to such an extent that it is profitable to process this dust for recovery.
The recovery of lead from the dust can, for example, take place by washing with dilute sulfuric acid sulfuric acid from the washing and cooling plant which can be used for this purpose. In this way, lead sulphate is obtained, which can be converted into lead in a manner known per se. The lye can be used for making the balls from the coarse dust, so that the zinc also contained in the lye can be recovered again, while the sulfur in the form of sulphate is broken down and discharged as SO2.
Dusts containing cadmium can be treated in the same way: however here, before using the detergent for pelletizing, the cadmium should be removed, for example by carburizing.
The process according to the invention is explained more clearly with the aid of the following examples.
Example I.
A flotation blende, with a cadmium content of 0.3%, was roasted at 1150 0 in a cyclone oven without reintroducing coarse dust in the form of balls. 64% roasted product was collected with 0.02% cadmium, 30% as coarse dust with 0.55% ad and 6% as fine dust electrostatically separated with 3% Cd. product coming out of the oven, there is therefore only about 3.5% of the Cd produced in the blende, the remainder being divided into halves between dust pods and fine dust and accumulating
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
particularly in the latter.
Since, in the @@ s of this working mode, an import part,. e of the production is presented in the form of coarse dust containing Od, which is therefore not suitable for charging into the reduction furnace (horizontal or vertical bare horn), and that on the other hand the enrichment in Cd of the fine dust is not of such importance that its separate treatment in order to recover the Cd is profitable, the coarse dust has been pelletized and reintroduced into the furnace.
In this way, it was achieved that the Cd contained therein was volatilized when passed through the furnace again, which further increased the cadmium content in the dust from the electrostatic cleaning. Another advantage of this working method is the production of a coarse-grained material, owing to the capacity in balls, which represents about 90% of the production. In order to achieve satisfactory volatilization of Cd, it is advisable not to exceed a particle size of 4 mm for the pellets. example 2.
A blende containing 2% lead was treated. For a roasting temperature of 1130 0, the proportion of roasted material was 72% with 0.6% Pb, that of coarse dust 25% with 3.7% Pb and that of fine dust 3% with 13, 5% Pb. In accordance with the points of view expressed with the example of the volatilization of Od, we also arrived in the case of this test, by pelletization of the coarse dust, on the one hand at a thorough enrichment of the fine dust in Pb, and, on the other hand, thanks to the increment. sizing of the particle size of the material discharged from the furnace as a result of the pelletization, for its direct use for the reduction process in a horizontal muffle ,,
