<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

This invention relates to the lubrication of thrust bearings and in particular bearings such as those used for large hydro-electric generators with vertical shaft or large pump motors *
A well known type of thrust bearing commonly employed for these machines comprises a rotating part centered on the shaft and having a highly polished surface which bears on a fixed segmented ring made of a number of bearings, for example eight or more. ten, according to the dimensions; the pads are spaced apart from each other and each have anti-friotion metal lined surfaces to cooperate with the polished overtaxa of the rotating part.
The bearings are supported in an oscillating fashion on a ring which is
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
supported in turn by the bottom of the housing of the bearing and which may be of the well-known Michell type with pivot line, or of the type
Kingsbury pivot point, or they can be resiliently supported on a number of pre-compressed springs. A typical example of a bearing having this latter type of thrust bearings is disclosed in UK Patent No. 720,816.
The bearing as a whole is completely enclosed in an oil reservoir which is made up of a bottom plate constituting the bottom of the bearing housing, an outer wall concentric with the shaft, a sleeve adjacent to the shaft. shaft and the tightly surrounding, constituting the inner wall, -and a cover plate to complete the tank. The latter thus comprises an inner chamber situated between the inner face of the bearing and the sleeve and an outer chamber between the outer face of the bearing and the outer wall.
The inner chamber communicates with the atmosphere and thus constitutes an area of low pressure, in the lubrication system, while the outer chamber is without. communication with the atmosphere and constitutes an area of high pressure in the reservoir. Cooling coils can be mounted in a known manner in the outer chamber.
Ducts extend radially in the rotating part and form oil passages between the inner and outer chambers. The oil circulation system is described in the patent mentioned above. In short, the ring or rotating part produces a centrifugal pumping action, sucking oil from the inner chamber and pushing it back under pressure through the radial ducts into the outer chamber where it circulates around the cooling coils, if any. made use of, then passes between and around the support pads, from where it is directed between the anti-friction lined surface and the rotating part back into the inner chamber, and begin to circulate again.
According to a feature of this invention, the circulation of the lubricating oil in a thrust bearing
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the type described above is notably aided by a radial current centrifugal pump or impeller which comprises a certain number of fins carried by the rotating part, which therefore rotate at the same time as the latter and are placed above the the steaming face of the pads adjacent to the inner ends of the radial ducts of the part, rotating. The fins are suitably mounted on a cylinder which descends from the top of the rotating part and extends between the fixed segmented bush ring and the inner wall of the tank, to the bottom of the latter.
The impeller vanes can be pivotally mounted if desired, so that they can be reversed for either direction of shaft rotation.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the outer ends of the radial conduits, where the latter open into the outer chamber of the reservoir, are provided with devices for regulating the flow rate, and consequently the pressure of the oil. outgoing. These devices can suitably be provided with removable nozzles' adapted to the ends of the conduits, by screwing for example. A set of nozzles can thus be easily replaced by another set of different dimensions to vary the dimensions of the orifice.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying schematic drawing, in which FIG. 1 is an elevational view partially in section along the axis of a bearing of the type mentioned and FIG. 2 is a partial view in horizontal section of the rotating part taken along line A-A in FIG. 1.
In the drawings, the ring or rotating part 1 is fixed to the shaft 2 by means of a thrust collar 3 and is provided with a number of radial oil lines 4 The thrust surface of the bearing is constituted by the contact surface between the rotating ring 1 and a fixed ring made of a number of Michell bearings 5 supported in a known manner on the bottom 6 of the housing of the bearing.
The oil tank is delimited
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
from the bottom 6, a vertical inner wall 7 closely surrounding the shaft 2 and an outer wall 8, and 'comprises an inner chamber 9 between the wall 7 and the bearing and an outer chamber
10, between the latter and the wall 8, where the cooling coils shown at 11 are located.
A number of fins 12 constituting a radial impeller are mounted on a cylinder 13 descending from the stop collar 3. These vanes are located above the plane of the bearing surface of the bearings 5 and near the inner ends of the ducts 4. The cylinder 13 descends practically to the bottom of the inner oil chamber 9. At their outer ends, the conduits 4- are threaded or otherwise arranged to receive removable nozzles 14, which makes it possible to vary the dimensions, of the outlet port to meet different operating conditions.
In Fig. 2, the fins are shown as curved outward in the direction of rotation; however, they can take any other suitable shape and can be mounted so as to pivot about a vertical axis and are thus liable to be reversed for either direction of rotation of the shaft.
The circulation of oil in the bearing is indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1, When the part 1 rotates, the oil is sucked by centrifugal pumping inaction, from the chamber 9 through the ducts 4 with the help of the vanes 12. And is discharged through the nozzles 14 into the chamber 10, through the cooling coils 11, through the spaces between the bearings 5, on the bearing surfaces 15 lined with anti-friction metal, to return. in room 9,.
Various details shown in the drawings have not been described because they are not necessary for understanding the invention.
