<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
gazeux provoque.
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

On a marqué en outre sur cette courbe les points a,' b et o auxquels correspondent par exemple, dans le cas d'un @lé- ment d'accumulateur argent-zinc, les différences de poten- tiel aux bornes dudit élément, respectivement de 2,00;
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

The invention, due to Mr. Henri, Georges ANDRE, relates to a device intended to automatically stop the charging of an electric accumulator when
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
it is fully charged, that is to say has received the maximum quantity of electricity that it is likely to restore.
It applies especially to accumulators of the type in which the gas evolution during the normal charge, that is to say that to which the reversible electrochemical reactions of the active materials correspond, is zero or at least. very weak, while gas evolution occurs in abundance when the accumulator is fully charged and the electrochemical reactions caused by the flow of current are then irreversible reactions. One such type is represented by a silver-zinc accumulator.
Various devices have already been proposed for automatically interrupting the charging of an accumulator in order to avoid the drawbacks caused by the omission of a charging stop. Such an omission, in fact, not only leads to the deterioration and even the destruction of the accumulator, but also risks causing damage to the surrounding area as a result of the explosion of the accumulator.
Most of these devices are based on a manometric principle, that is to say that the increase in pressure which occurs as a result of the release of gas is used to control, directly or indirectly, the opening. of the charging circuit. If such devices can find application in the case of small-sized accumulators, their use is, on the other hand, practically excluded when it comes to controlling the charge of larger accumulators, and this in particular by due to the fact that the tray, receptacle or case, in which the accumulator is contained, must necessarily be sealed so that the clearance
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
gaseous causes. 'effectively the increase in pressure which constitutes the triggering factor.
In addition, and independently of this difficulty, such devices are not absolutely safe, mechanical incidents being liable to occur, so that it is necessary to provide additional devices taking this possibility into account. bility, which complicates production all the more. Finally, it is necessary to provide means of adjustment, of complicated execution, to take account of the variation of factors, inherent or not in the accumulator, in order to maintain the desirable accuracy of the devices.
The present invention overcomes these drawbacks, shortcomings and difficulties. It relates to an apparatus for the automatic control of the stopping of the charge of an accumulator of the type in which the release of gas becomes significant only after completion of the reversible electrochemical reactions, characterized in that the factor control of this stop is constituted by the gas volume released and this at a pressure which is in principle equal to or close to ambient pressure.
An apparatus according to the invention comprises a receptacle containing a liquid and in communication with the aocumulator, the charge of which is to be controlled, means suitable for allowing the transfer of the liquid under the action of displacement of the gases coming from it. of the accumulator, as well as means for interrupting, directly or indirectly, the charging of the accumulator when the liquid transferred reaches or exceeds a predetermined volume.
The invention is furthermore remarkable for the fact that it is the liquid itself transferred which, when it reaches
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
a predetermined level in a capacitor, constitutes the conductive agent whose interposition between two contacts directly or indirectly causes the stopping of the load,
As a variant, the liquid is non-conductive and the reverse phenomenon is used to control this stopping.
In another embodiment, the ascent of the transferred liquid causes the displacement of a float which, when it reaches a predetermined position, controls the interruption of the charge current.
According to one embodiment, the float acts magnetically on the contacts controlling the charging circuit, so that the container containing the liquid can easily be made in a sealed manner and the apparatus becomes easily transportable.
The invention is also remarkable for the fact that the charge of a battery is controlled by rewinding the gases which are given off, not from the whole of the battery, but, in principle, from only one of the batteries. constituent elements of the latter. The means of pneumatic connection between the accumulator and the gasometer, formed by the apparatus according to the invention, are thus greatly simplified and, in addition, the dimensions of the latter can be kept at small values. , which is advantageous for most applications.
This method of controlling the charge of a battery is, in general, of a higher efficiency than that used previously in general and which consisted in collecting all of the gas released from the battery, In its application to the silver-zinc accumulator, in particular, it allows the interruption of the charge.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
almost insensitive to the disparity that can; exist between various cells of the same battery because, even if said cell is in a poorer condition than the others, the release of gas that it produces takes on a decisive importance only when the charge of the other cells, healthier, is almost complete.
This method can moreover be implemented with the volumetric apparatus mentioned above, or with another apparatus.
Reciprocally, said device can be pneumatically connected to a single element of an accumulator, or else to the whole of an accumulator, in particular in the case of small batteries where: it is easily possible to produce a sealed general envelope fulfilling the role of gas collector.
In the description which follows, given by way of example, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a schematic view of an apparatus according to the invention, for a first embodiment; - Figure 2 is a diagram; - fig. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 1, but for another embodiment; - fig. 4 is a view similar to Figures 1 and 3, but for yet another embodiment; - fig. 5 relates to a variant.
The apparatus according to the invention comprises in one embodiment (Fig. 1) a container 10 divided into two chambers 11 and 12 by a partition 13, vertical, issuing from the upper wall 14 of the container and which remains at a distance from the bottom. 15 of the latter so as to leave an interval 16
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
by which said chambers communicate. The chamber 11 is in communication by a pipe 17 with an accumulator battery 18, preferably with a single element 38 of the latter. The terminals 19 and 20 of said battery receive the conductors 21 and 22 forming part of a charging circuit 23 on which is interposed a switch 24 comprising a movable blade 25, magnetic, subjected to the action of a electromagnet winding 26.
The latter forms part of a circuit 27 which also comprises conductive blades 28 and 29, fixed to the upper wall 30 of the chamber 12. The supply of the circuit 27 is made by a source 31, which can be the battery itself. The charging current is supplied from an AC mains 32 via a transformer 33 and a rectifier 34, the latter being interposed in circuit 23.
Chambers 11 and 12 contain a liquid 35, which may be water. The chamber 11 can be vented to the atmosphere by a pipe 36 controlled by a valve 37.
The operation is as follows:
Initially, the chambers 11 and 12 are filled with the liquid 35, which is present in an amount the determination of which clearly results from the following, With the battery 18 being charged, the gas evolution of cell 38 of said battery at which when the pipe 17 is closed, it is very weak as long as said element is not fully loaded. The gas which evolves arrives in the compartment 11 and gradually pushes the liquid 35, the level of the latter rising slowly in the compartment 12. As soon as the charge is completed, the gas evolution is much more abundant.

On the flower?, We have shown a clir, m.,. LLIe on which we plotted the times t on the abscissa and the volume v of gas released on the ordinate. Part A of: the curve which corresponds to the normal load is appreciably reotiline and in any case very slightly rising, until the completion of the load which corresponds appreciably to point a. As soon as the normal charge is completed, if the charge current continues to be applied, the curve representing the volume of the gas evolution becomes very rapidly upward, as shown by part B.
The points a, 'b and o have also been marked on this curve to which correspond, for example, in the case of a silver-zinc accumulator element, the differences in potential at the terminals of said element, respectively. from 2.00;
2.02; .2.04 volts, thus clearly showing the sensitivity of the process for characterizing the state of charge of an accumulator by the volume of gas evolved.
Therefore, as soon as the element is charged, the liquid rises very quickly in the chamber 12 and soon, bathing the contacts 28 and 29, electrically unites the latter, which completes the circuit 27 and, by attraction of . the pelotte 25, interrupts the charging circuit, 23. Of course, other electrical arrangements could be used to cause this interruption.
The opening of the valve 37 allows the return of the liquid in the chamber 11 and the reestablishment of the initial conditions, in which the levels in the chambers 11 and 12 are the same.
In the variant according to Figure 3, the capacity 40 is divided into two chambers 41 and 42 by a partition 43
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
substantially horizontal having two orifices 44 and 45 to the first of which is connected a tube 46 passing through the upper wall 47 of the capacity and connecting to the tube 17. To the second port 45 is connected a dip tube 48 whose height is such that it leaves an interval 49 with the bottom 50 of the capacity. A third orifice 51 is provided in the partition 43 and forms the end of an ascending tube 52 also passing through the upper wall 47 and controlled by a valve 53.
On the upper wall 47 are also fixed two contacts 54 and 55 forming part of an electrical control circuit 56 comprising a source 57 and suitable for controlling, by electro-mechanical means for example, the interruption of the charging circuit. drums.
The operation is as follows:
Initially, the lower chamber 42 is filled with liquid, for example water. As gas is released from the accumulator, the charge of which is to be controlled, the liquid contained in the chamber 42 has access to the chamber 41 and this through the intermediary of the dip tube 48. When the quantity of gas released corresponds to the full charge, the transfer of the liquid 42 to the chamber 41 is such that the liquid reaches the contacts 54 and 55 in the latter, which closes the circuit 56 and causes the circuit to open. dump. The initial conditions are restored by opening the tap 53.
Reference is now made to FIG. 4. In this embodiment, the main capacity or reservoir 60 contains, in its lower part, a bell 01, the lower orifice 62 of which, widely open, is at a small distance from the bottom 63 of said reservoir. , the parai-lateral 64
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
of the said bell; being advantageously a short distance from the side wall 65 @@ this reservoir.
In the bell 61 opens, on the upper wall 66, a tube 67, crossing the upper chamber 68 of the reservoir 60 as well as the wall 69 of the latter and which connects to the pipe 70, which comes from an accumulator ( for example of an @ element of the latter) and collects the gases which are given off.
In the upper chamber 68 is present a float 71, which is carried by an arm 72, the opposite end of which is pivotally mounted at 73 on a bracket or the like 74 fixed to the upper wall 69. The latter comprises terminals 75 and 76 which carry elastic contact blades, respectively 77 and 78, which, in the unstressed position, are spaced from each other, as shown in the figure, so as to keep open a circuit 79, which for example controls the accumulator charging circuit, comprising the conductors 80 and 81 leading to 1. mies 75 and 76.
On one of the blades, the lower lane 77, can be exerted the action of a pusher f32 pivotally mounted at 83 at an intermediate point of the rod 72 and which is advantageously guided by a duct 84 formed in the wall. upper 69.
At the top wall 66 of the bell 61 is. also terminated on the one hand a tube 85 which protrudes outside the reservoir '60, through the wall 69, and which ends in a manometric device consisting of two branches 86 and 87 in the form of a U and pro @@@ to contain a liquid, such as mercury, as shown in 88. On the other hand, a tube 89 can put the interior of the bell 61 in communication with the atmosphere, this communication being controlled by a valve 90.

very little .. As the hiil pc-r arrives in the tubing 70 and the tube 67, the liquid contained in the bell 61 passes into the chamber G8 pc: r the Threat interval between said bell and the tank 60.
When the level of the liquid in the chamber 68 reaches the float 71, the latter rises by driving the rod 82 and, for a predetermined quantity of liquid transferred, the pusher 82 biases the contact blade 77 against the blade 78. , which closes the circuit 79 and causes the opening of the charging circuit.
The slight increase in pressure which occurs inside the bell 61 at the heart and as the gas arrives results in a difference in level between the two columns of liquid contained in the branches 86 and 87, so that the consideration of this manometer makes it possible to be informed on the condition of the same with regard to the liquid 'transferred from the bell 61 into the chamber 68, and consequently on the state of charge of the accumulator to which is connected said bell.
