<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Flexible tape measure for circumferences or perimeters."
The object of the present invention is a flexible band gauge for circumferences or perimeters.
It is often necessary to know the circumference and the diameter of a cylinder or an annular area or the perimeter of any figure which does not have a hollow formed by a plane intersecting the object to be measured; for example, for the measurement of the circumference or the diameter of the fingers of the hand, hitherto rings (gauges) have been used in which the finger is introduced and these rings are successively measured on a conical element 'suitably graduated.
According to the present invention, the measurer consists of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by a strip of flexible, non-extensible material, rigidly fixed by one end to a support and by the other end to a cursor running along the graduations made on said support, this cursor passing through an opening made in the support, as close as possible to the fixing point of the other end of the strip ....
According to a particular form of the invention, the movable end of the strip is fixed to a nut sliding in the interior of the support so that it cannot be rotated; this nut is screwed onto a threaded rod actuated by the fingers of the operator, via a button or ring applied to the opposite end of the support. The nut bears an index which moves along graduated scales applied or placed anyway on the support itself, the graduations being established to indicate the circumference, diameter or perimeter of the figure.
The flexible material constituting the strip will preferably be chosen from among materials having a high coefficient of flexibility and elasticity due to which, with the movement of the cursor, it will describe successive circles.
The appended diviners and the description which will follow, description and drawings cited purely by way of non-limiting example, will make it possible to deduce the other features and advantages of the invention.
FIG. 1 schematically represents a view in longitudinal section of a measurer according to the invention; FIG. 2 represents a view in elevation.
In these figures: 1 designates the support of the meter, 2 the flexible strip consisting of a thin sheet of metal having the end 3 ... fixed to said support 'and the end fixed to a nut 1 of square section sliding in a' square opening 6 made in said support 1. Nut 1 is screwed onto
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the threaded rod 7 rotating in the support 1 and integral with the button 8 which is fixed to said rod and is mounted on said support so as to prevent axial displacement thereof while allowing rotation by the operator's fingers; the nut is thus moved and thus allows the flexible strip 2 to cover a more or less large area.
@ The nut 2. has an index ± which moves with it, along graduations 10 and 11 established so as to indicate the diameters, circumferences or perimeters of the figures enveloped by the band.
Various modifications could obviously be made to the device described above, for example, the support could be made of transparent plastic and present various graduations, reported, engraved or printed, to indicate the measurements expressed either in the decimal scale or in inches. , or in conventional calibers. The nut could be replaced by a slider moving inside the support and having a small pivot or button emerging from an opening made longitudinally in the support itself and operating as explained above. Or the measurer could be provided with protective flanges for the flexible band with possible clasps to be placed in the operator's pocket, without going beyond the scope of the invention.
