<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The subject of the invention is a method making it possible to control the position, with respect to a determined point, of a mass of solid materials which are electrically conductive and capable of moving.
This process uses the electrical conductivity of the mass.
According to the invention, one brings to different electric potentials, on the one hand the mass of conductive materials and on the other hand an electrode terminating at the point considered, and the possible circulation of electric current in the electric circuit is thus detected. form.
In a particular embodiment of the invention, the electric current flowing in the aforementioned circuit controls, by relay by equivalent means, a warning device of any suitable type, the operation of which thus depends on the position occupied by the conductive mass. solid, which makes it possible to perform the maneuver that has become necessary at the appropriate time.
It is moreover possible to actuate, by means of the electric circuit considered above, a remote control device of any known type, causing the operation the need for which has been indicated.
In the same installation, several electrodes can be provided connected to electrical circuits which control signals corresponding to the various positions occupied by the conductive mass.
In order to show how the invention can be put into practice, the appended drawings represent, by way of nonlimiting examples, two embodiments.
Fig. 1 is a schematic vertical section showing the application of the invention to a gasifier.
Fig. 2 is a schematic vertical section showing the application of the invention to a device for supplying conductive materials.
The gasifier shown in fig. 1 comprises, in the known manner, a tank 1 containing the fuel mass 2, and provided at its lower part with a grid 3 and a box 4 through which an introduction of air and water vapor takes place. In 5 is shown the departure of gases and in 6 the loading opening.
In such a gasifier, the height of fuel must vary within narrow limits and it is necessary to constantly monitor this height in order to maintain a suitable supply, despite variations in consumption.
According to the invention, there is provided an electrode consisting of a conductive rod 7 substantially vertical isolated from the body 1. The lower end of the rod 7 is arranged so as to determine the fuel level below which recharging is required. .
The rod 7 is part of the circuit of an electromagnet 8, supplied by a source of electricity 9.
The body 1 of the gasifier being assumed to be metallic, the circuit of the electromagnet is connected at 10 to this body. This electromagnet controls, in the example shown, two switches 11 and 13 arranged in series with a control lamp 12 and a warning lamp 14 respectively.
When the fuel level is located higher than the tip of rod 7, the electrical circuit is closed by the conductive mass formed by the fuel. The switch 11 then being closed by the electromagnet, the control lamp 12 is on, which shows that
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the device is functioning normally. With switch 13 open, warning lamp 14 is extinguished.
When the fuel level drops below the tip of the rod 7, the electromagnet 8 is de-energized. As a result, switch 11 is open and switch 13 is closed. As a result, the control lamp 12 is turned off and the warning lamp 14 is turned on, indicating that recharging is necessary.
A relay circuit can be connected to the terminals of switch 13, determining by remote control all the maneuvers for loading the gasifier, the operations concerning the operation and safety of this appliance.
In the case where the body of the gasifier is made of a non-conductive material, the circuit of the electromagnet 8 must comprise, opposite the rod 7, a second metal rod (not shown) in permanent contact with the fuel.
In fig. 2 it has been assumed that a conveyor, such as a conveyor belt, or a noria 20 discharging conductive materials into a chute 21 which gives access to a hopper 22. The apparatus shown makes it possible to signal the case where the hopper 22 ceases to flow. be fed. To this end, at the top of the hopper, an electrode consisting of a fixed metal rod 23 extending downward to the level below which the reloading of the hopper s. 'imposed.
The rod 23 forms part of an electrical circuit supplied by a source of electricity 24 and comprising an electromagnet 25 which controls a switch 26 placed on the circuit derived from a warning device consisting of a lamp 27 or any optical or acoustic signal. appropriate.
When the hopper 22 is sufficiently full, so as not to require any recharging, the metal rod 23 is surrounded by the conductive materials contained in this hopper, the electromagnet 25 is energized and keeps the switch 26 open, so that lamp 27 is not on
If the level of the material drops below the tip of the rod 23, the electromagnet 25 being de-energized, the switch 26 is closed and the lamp 27 lights up, indicating that charging should take place. .
It is also necessary to guard against the malfunction which may occur in the event of clogging of the chute 21. For this, another electrode is placed at the top of this chute, consisting of a metal rod. 30, the lower end of which is located outside the outer surface that can form, under normal conditions, the materials passing through the chute 21. This rod 30 forms part of an electrical circuit supplied by the source 24 and comprising an electro magnet 31 which controls a switch 32 placed on the circuit of a lamp 33 or any other suitable warning device.
When the flow of materials in the chute 21 takes place normally, these materials are out of contact with the tip of the rod 23. The electromagnet 31 is not energized and the switch 32 is open, therefore. so that the lamp 33 is not on.
If, on the contrary, there is a clogging in the chute 21, the level of the conductive materials can rise to the point of touching the metal rod 30; the electromagnet 31 is then energized and it closes the switch 32 which supplies the lamp 33. The switching on of this lamp signals
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
as well as the flow of materials in the chute 21 takes place under abnormal conditions and it is necessary to remedy this agency.
It should be understood that the invention is not limited to the examples described above, given solely by way of explanation, and that it can be used in all installations comprising a circulation of conductive solid materials.
The devices in question can also be associated with remote control systems determining the execution of the maneuvers necessary to ensure normal operation of the installation.
The method is capable of multiple applications, in addition to those indicated above and may in particular be suitable for locating the level of the fuel in a home of heating appliances or boilers, in blast furnaces, in storage silos. , etc ...
