<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to improvements to bearings for pivots having a small continuous oscillation movement and in which the bearing of the pivot exerts a strong pressure per unit area.
An object of the invention is to allow effective lubrication of the bearing surfaces of the pivot and of the bearing, in particular on the side subjected to pressure so as to replace the lubricant expelled from the surfaces in contact.
Another object of the invention is to establish more favorable conditions of the pivot when the coefficient of friction increases for any reason.
Another object of the invention is to reduce the sliding speeds of the various bearing surfaces relative to the sliding speed of the bearing surface of the pivot resting directly in a bearing in the usual manner.
The invention consists in inserting between the pivot and the usual bearing a ring capable of rotating freely with respect to the pivot and the bearing When the pivot is driven by oscillations of a determined amplitude, the friction drives the ring and the latter is animated by oscillations the amplitude of which is reduced by the friction between it and the outer bearing, resulting in a continuous series of oscillations, which do not necessarily have the same amplitude in both directions, as the interposed ring performs a rotational movement in one direction, at least for a certain period:
According to the invention, this ring has longitudinal lubrication grooves on its cylindrical surfaces, so that the rotational movement lubricates all the surfaces in contact, even at the point of the highest pressure per unit area *
The free rotation of the ring is ensured by the fact that there is equal play between the ring and the bearing on the one hand, and between the pivot and the ring on the other hand. The relative sliding speeds of the contacting surfaces are reduced by the distribution of these speeds between the relative movements of the pivot with respect to the block and of the ring with respect to the bearing.
The device according to the present invention is particularly suitable for Cardan joints in which the four pivots are mounted in the manner previously described.
An embodiment of the device according to the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the pivot, the ring and the bearing.
FIG. 2 is an axial sectional view of these elements.
It can be seen from Figures 1 and 2 that a ring 1 is interposed between the pivot 3 and the bearing 2, and that this ring can rotate freely relative to the pivot 3 and relative to the bearing 2. The pivot 3 is driven by a continuous oscillation movement of an amplitude a. A radial load Q is imposed on this pivot. The friction torque generated by the oscillating movement of the pivot 3 in the ring 1 tends to drive this ring, because the saddle is retained by the friction torque generated in cushion 2 Theoretically, ring 1 should oscillate at the same frequency as pivot 3, but with an amplitude less than half of amplitude a (assuming that the coefficient of friction is the same between ring 1 and the pivot 3 and between the ring and the bearing 2),
because the outer diameter of the ring 1 is greater than the outer diameter of the pivot 3, and, because the friction torque is therefore greater between the ring 1 and the bearing 2. In practice, the amplitude of the oscillations of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ring 1 is not constant. In fact, to obtain this constancy all the elements giving rise to the oscillation of the ring 1 should be perfect,. Consequently, the oscillations of the ring 1 do not have the same amplitude in both directions.
Thanks to the different amplitude of the ring oscillations in them. two directions, a continuous change of the relative positions of the ring 1 with respect to the other elements is obtained. During a certain period the increase in amplitude can take place in the same direction and then be reversed. As a result, the lubricating oil is driven by the ring 1 which has for this purpose grooves 4 formed along a generatrix of two cylindrical surfaces of the ring, this oil thus being distributed on the bearing surfaces of the pivot 3 and of the bearing 2. The lubricating oil can be introduced into the grooves 4 by any feeding device.
For pivots mounted directly in a bushing without an interposed ring, the efficiency of the grooves would be zero if the oscillation amplitude was less than the interval between the grooves. These disadvantages could be avoided by increasing the number of grooves: However, given that the amplitude of the oscillations is very small, it would be necessary to provide a very large number of grooves, which would reduce the useful bearing surface in the same proportion. @
The ring 1 is mounted with some play in the bearing 2 so that it can rotate freely.
If the coefficient of friction differs for some reason between two of the contact surfaces (for example between the pivot 'and the ring) compared to the other two surfaces (between the ring and the bearing), the friction work is uniform. - evenly distributed on the spans presenting] the most favorable friction conditions.
In addition, thanks to the fact that it is possible to provide a certain clearance between the elements, it also becomes possible to achieve a kinematic connection by a single Cardan joint between two shafts held rigidly, and which are not perfectly aligned.
The distribution of the oscillation movement between the pivot and the ring also decreases the sliding speed of the bearing surfaces compared to the sliding speed of the pivot 3 mounted directly in the bearing 2, without the interposition of the ring 1.
