<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Le bouchon amélioré selon 1 invention est, comme représenté fabri- qué de préférence sous la forme d'un corps creux, à la manière d'un gobe- let inversé dont la surface interne (10) est en général::cylindrique ou substantiellement cylindrique de façon à permettre l'extraction aisée de la portion mâle du moule;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to improvements made to stoppers for closing bottles and similar containers, these stoppers being made of a synthetic, elastically deformable plastic material, for example polyethylene or an equivalent material.
More particularly, the invention relates to improvements made to the stoppers produced with the material mentioned above, and its object is to allow, with the advantages which are mentioned below, the extension of the industrial field of application of such stoppers in the ordinary corking of bottles, in particular wine bottles, to replace the use of normal cork stoppers.
The industrial products comprising these improvements, that is to say the closures for the uses indicated having the characteristics given below, constitute further objects of the present invention.
It is well known that in general the bottles of wines, whether these wines are fine or ordinary, other drinks and liquids, are closed or "corked" immediately after bottling by means of cylindrical or substantially cylindrical corks. which are forced and driven into the neck of the bottle. These cork stoppers are removed by means of a common type "corkscrew" which, as is known, is provided with a suitable helical tip capable of being inserted deep into the cork so as to produce a sufficient grip. allows the cap to be removed.
It is also well known that these stoppers, despite their low cost and their simplicity of production, application and removal, are not entirely without drawbacks, particularly because the organic material forming the stopper is not entirely insensitive. - due to the chemical and biochemical action of the contents of the bottle, which can lead to an alteration of the aroma and the organic qualities of the contents of the bottle, especially in the case of wines. In addition, the economic character of the stoppering with cork stoppers is reduced in practice because this cork stopper must be of very homogeneous quality and of the very first order when it is really desired to obtain an effective corking, given that each interruption in the continuity of the mass of the cork stopper affects its sealing action.
Likewise, the removal of the cork stopper can cause inconvenience since the cork stopper, especially if it is not of the very highest quality, can break under tension and / or pressure. being improperly inserted or due to improper operation of the corkscrew.
A specific object of the present invention is to provide stoppers which can be used in place of the normal cork stoppers mentioned above, without having any of the disadvantages mentioned above.
According to the invention, this advantageous industrial effect is substantially obtained from the fact that the considered improvements consist in producing the stopper of an elastic material, of the type mentioned, in the form of a hollow body having a basically conical outer shape and with progressively variable sections, varying in such a way that its elastic resistance to deformation gradually increases from its lower end to its upper end, and in addition to producing at the top of this body a part which can be perforated by a normal corkscrew. mal, or similar instrument and so designed to be gripped sufficiently firmly to permit removal of the stopper.
These and other more specific characteristics

closures improved according to the new principles mentioned above, as well as the main advantages resulting from their use, will be better understood from the following detailed description of some of the embodiments which the invention allows, with reference to the drawings. in the appendix in which:
FIG. 1 shows, in partial side view and in partial cross section passing through 1 axis, an improved stopper according to the invention in a position preceding the insertion, above the neck of an ordinary bottle, clean position ensure the plugging using the plug. Figure 2 shows a side view, limited to the upper portion of a modified form of this plug, and Figure 3 shows the plug in Figure 1 in its inserted position, the plug being gripped by the screw of a normal corkscrew for removal.
With particular reference to the figures in the drawing:
The improved stopper according to the invention is, as shown, preferably manufactured in the form of a hollow body, in the manner of an inverted cup, the internal surface (10) of which is generally: cylindrical or substantially cylindrical. so as to allow easy extraction of the male portion of the mold;
To give the external contact surface of the bottle neck a taper (C) large enough to ensure its insertion by progressive pressure and a perfect adhesion with the internal side (11) of the bottle neck (12) and at the same time to prevent the walls (13) of the hollow body at their upper part have an excessive thickness (due to the different inclination between the internal surface (10) and the conical external surface (C)), the external surface (14) of the hollow body - is provided with several ribs running over the entire circumference (15, 15) whose protrusions gradually reduce from the top rib (15 ') to the lowest rib (15 "), the so-called theoretically conical surface (C ) being the tangent to the rib.
This ribbing, due to the deformability of the material constituting its sections, can adhere perfectly to the internal surface (11) of the neck of the bottle, each functioning as a single closure element. To obtain greater adhesion, for example in the case of high pressures and / or to overcome the tendency to expel the cork which could be caused by a certain effect of taper in the neck of the bottle, this ribbing (15 ) can be provided for example with grooves (16), as shown in figure 2, one or more in number, or at least be shaped so as to increase its ability to adjust and to adhere to the surface (11 ).
To stop the insertion movement when the stopper is almost fully seated, the stopper can be provided with a small flange at its top end (17), shown in Figures 1 and 2, or equivalent means.
According to the new principle indicated above, the bottom (18) of this cup body is provided with a part easily perforated by the tip (19) of a corkscrew (Figure 3) and shaped so as to withstand a tensile force (T) applied by the corkscrew used to extract the cork. Preferably, this perforable part is provided by the area of the bottom (20) having the form of a disc of relatively small thickness, a cavity (21) preferably of frustoconical shape to help and guide the tip of the puller. -cap, which is provided at the center of this end (18),
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the taper of this cavity together with the relatively thick wall material (22) providing said resistance to the tensile force (T).
A stopper made according to the aforementioned principles can be easily inserted and forced into the neck of a bottle without the assistance of special apparatus, by simple insertion and pressure in the axial direction. The perfect adhesion produced between its external surface and the inside of the neck of the bottle, together with the total impermeability inherent in products made of plastic material, ensure a perfectly tight seal. The interterability and chemical inertia of plastic materials such as polyethylene or possibly similar materials, for example of the polyvinyl group, ensure complete and long-lasting conservation of the organic characteristics of the content.
However, the fact that the improved stoppers according to the invention have been described and shown solely by way of example and in no way in a limiting sense, with the sole aim of demonstrating their essential characteristics and the advantageous industrial results which may result from the Applying the new principles illustrated above, it is understood that these plugs can be manufactured by making additional changes and modifications according to the various specific needs, manufacture and requirements at the time of use and as they may be. further improved by the teachings of practical experience and by the fact that it will possibly be possible in the future to have other suitable materials, all this without departing from the scope of the invention.
For these reasons it is understood that within the scope of the present patent is included any equivalent product having one or more of any specified characteristics mentioned below.
