BOITE ENDUITE, ETANCHE, !;UNIE D'UN COUVERCLE DOSEUR ET LA MACHINE
PROPRE A FAIRE L'ENDUCTION.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

COATED, WATERPROOF BOX!; UNITE WITH A DOSING LID AND THE MACHINE
CLEAN TO MAKE COATING.
The present invention relates to a box sealed against liquids or other materials, for example detergents, by a special coating, and the upper opening of which is provided with a plastic cover, capable of dispensing a regular dose with each use and possibly fitted with a discharge nozzle.
The subject of the invention is therefore: A coated box, A coating and its manner of application, A plastic cover, The machine used to apply the coating.
The box used can be of any material, and cardboard for example; it can be of circular, square, rectangular or any other shape of any size. The base can be formed by a metallic pellet, or cardboard or any material, and stamped, crimped or glued.
The coating can, among other things, be obtained as follows: An inert, insoluble and sprayable material, optionally plasticized beforehand, is taken as a support, and a plastic material is incorporated therein, with or without the use of one or more solvents, intended for form a movie. This method has the advantage over others that it costs less. Indeed, even if a very thin film can have the necessary qualities of waterproofing and plasticity, it is not possible, in practice, to apply it in a sufficiently thin layer, hence waste of expensive material.
While by mixing the film-forming with a material of low cost, it is practically possible to apply a layer at much more advantageous cost conditions than if the whole layer were constituted only by synthetic resin, and, of more, we have the assurance that a continuous film exists
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in the mass.
The coating may, for example, consist of pine resin, natural or otherwise, either previously treated by esterification, by hydrogenation or otherwise, or an asphalt-based resin or wax.
This material can be plasticized either by a suitable oil or by any other natural or synthetic plasticizer, such as for example castor oil, linseed oil, ethyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, etc.
The added synthetic resin acts as a film-forming and ensures absolute sealing.
The application is carried out at a very high temperature so as to reduce the use of solvent (s) in large proportions and thus obtain faster drying. The solvents employed can be alcohols, chlorinated derivatives, or the like; this application is made by spraying by means of the machine described below 'The machine essentially consists of a water bath of heating oil at very high boiling point, heated electrically, by gas, by steam or by any other suitable heat source. The temperature can be regulated by a thermostat. Coils are immersed in this bain-marie for the passage of the plaster and the spray air.
An oil intake fitted in this reservoir makes it possible to pump this heated oil through a double-walled pipe in the center of which passes the heated material and directed towards the gun. The latter has an extension that can also be heated by the circulation of oil. The coating thus arrives at the gun head at a very high temperature. We could also use a bypass system to establish a circuit of the hot material. The second part of the coating machine consists of a mobile cart on rails; a pneumatic device provides it with a back and forth through a 4-way valve or 2 coupled 2-way valves, which directs the compressed air sometimes to a pump body, sometimes to another pump body, thus reversing the direction of travel at the right time.
This reversal is done automatically by the comings and goings of the cart. The amplitude of the movement is adjustable by moving the reversing cams. The speed of movement is a function of the air pressure regulated by a pressure reducer. From one end to the other of the spraying machine are tensioned 2 fixed chains. On the carriage is fixed a pulley on the axis of which are mounted 2 toothed pinions with "freewheel" system, one chain cooperating with the top of a toothed pinion and the other chain with the underside of the other toothed wheel . In this way, the back and forth movement of the carriage ensures continuous rotation of the pulley in the same direction of rotation.
It should be noted that this device can also be controlled by a source of energy other than compressed air, the transformation to and from being obtained either by cam, or by eccentric or any other system of translation of circular movement in linear movement.
The rotational movement of the pulley is transmitted to a cylinder or a cone in the shape of the box to be coated, either directly or by means of a transmission, in particular with a view to ensuring a multiplication or a reduction. The box to be coated is introduced into the cylinder or cone, as the case may be. By the operation of the control, the carriage advances, the box to be coated is set in rotation and a cam activates the gun., The box therefore advances while rotating and, the gun remaining fixed, enters the box. The gun can have a spray head with a flat and angular jet, or even be eccentric and oblique with respect to the axis of the box. The jet thus reaches the wall of the box, the bottom of which is also treated at the end of its stroke.
The jet is adjusted so as to operate at maximum in the space delimited by the wall and the bottom. We could also achieve the same result by animating the box with a rotational movement but without advancement, the gun then being introduced into the box. The amplitude of the movement is adjusted so that the spray begins on the thickness of the edge of the wall of the can and continues to the bottom of the can. Spraying can be done either on the way out or on the way back,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
either on the way there and on the way back. In order to be able to contain certain liquids with maximum safety, it may be advantageous to apply a second layer. Likewise, it may be advantageous to spray a special layer on the seam (that is to say on the inner edge of the cardboard).
In this case we can spray on this section without rotational movement of the box, either on the outward, or return, or outward and return. To obtain this result, it suffices to remove either one of the 2 chains, or both, or one or both toothed wheels. As a result of the high temperature of the spraying (above the boiling point of the solvents) a good part of them is removed by evaporation at the time of spraying. Likewise, as a result of the expansion due to the atomizing air, the material is greatly cooled when it reaches the wall of the box. The remaining part of the solvent (s) may need to be removed.
This can be done by natural drying, or by means of an oven, or of any dryer, or even with infrared rays or by means of an electronic device generating high frequency. It is possible, for example, to proceed as follows: A trolley is provided on each side of the heating body. After application of the first layer, the box is placed on a conveyor passing through an oven. On leaving the oven, the box is taken and the second layer applied, the box being placed on the second cart.
The sealed box thus obtained is closed by a suitable cover. It can be metallic and crimped, or cardboard crimped and / or glued, or not. It is preferable that, being uncrimped, it is constituted by a groove in which the edge of the wall of the box is embedded and where this edge is wedged against a shoulder inside the groove. The edge of the cardboard previously coated by the spraying is applied with a press and sinks into the bottom of the groove while a film of the coating is forced inwards along the wall. In this way Sealing is ensured twice, on the one hand by the shoulder of the groove, on the other hand by the bead of film formed, and the cover itself is fixed to the box.
The shape of the throat can vary according to the needs; it must however allow the discharge of], - coating., the crushing and clamping of the cardboard. One could also eliminate the annular outer part of the cover and keep only the inner shoulder. This cover may be provided with an opening, pinching or mechanical flow means or any other opening allowing the contents to flow. For certain products, an air intake opening may be provided consisting of a thinner part which can be pierced or by a second opening of the same type as the first or the like.
It is also possible to provide an externally domed cover (concave). By tilting the box so that the liquid arrives in front of the drain hole and pressing with your finger on the convex part of the cover, one then causes an air pressure inside the box which has for effect of driving out, through the drainage hole, a determined quantity of the contents. It is thus possible to dose the desired amount of content each time. The dose depends on the rounded part which is calculated according to the dose to be ejected.
