<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS TO ELECTRONIC MOTOR CONTROL SYSTEMS
The present invention, Jo QUENOT system, relates to the electronic control of a reversible motor.
It is particularly applicable to servo systems (direct control or remote control) using an electrical control signal (error signal) whose passage through a maximum or a minimum of amplitude corresponds to a zero error in the position of the enslaved organ.
This is to distinguish the systems according to the present invention from the many control systems in which the control voltage is proportional to the position error of the servo member.
The systems according to the present invention make it possible to use control signals of maximum or minimum amplitude, variable in a very wide range and do not require any prior shaping of the control signal.
They automatically ensure the immobilization of the drive motor in a position such that the control signal is maximum or minimum.
According to an alternative embodiment of the invention, the speed of rotation of the motor is automatically high when the control signal has a value far from its maximum or minimum, this speed decreasing as one approaches the position. correct balance According to a second variant of the invention it is possible to modify the value of the useful torque of the motor so that it has a higher value when starting the device.
According to a preferred variant of the invention, the control circuit ensures automatic stopping of the engine.

screwing at the correct setting without oscillation
According to the invention, the reversible motor drives the slaved organ in an arbitrary direction, the control signal (or error signal) being simultaneously measured in an electrical circuit with memory storing the maximum value, in value. absolute, of said signal and automatically controlling the reversal of the direction of rotation of the motor ,, when this value is exceeded ,, via an amplifier circuit supplying either the motor directly or relays arranged in the circuit. powering said motor.
One of the main advantages of the devices in accordance with the invention lies in their flexibility with respect to the variations in amplitude of both the control signal and the supply voltages of the various electronic tubes constituting them. tolerable food are in fact close to 400%.
The circuits for implementing the invention are also characterized by great simplicity and small bulk.
The invention will be clearly understood by referring to the following description given without limitation of two circuits for implementing the invention used to control adjustable electrical components of a tuning circuit. It is of course understood that this particular application of the invention is in no way limiting as to its scope, the two circuits also being described by way of illustration.
Figure 1 shows schematically a circuit according to the invention,!) Sensitive to a control signal of negative polarity with respect to ground, passing through a minimum (Figure 2) o It is easy to l One skilled in the art to see the modifications to be made to the circuit so that it is controlled by signals of positive polarity.
The purpose of the circuit is to supply, by the gas atmosphere tubes V4 and V5, the inductors I1 and I2 of a motor M driving for example a variable tuning capacitor of a circuito We have shown in 6 a resistance in series in the armature of the motor supplied by an auxiliary source of direct voltage., not shown., the negative terminal of which is assumed to be connected to ground
As it appears in the figure, the anode of the diode V1 is maintained at a positive potential with respect to its cathode, by means of the voltage divider assembly, constituted by the resistors 1 and 2 connected to a source suitable bias voltage,
not shown in the figure o The current flowing in V1 maintains the grid of the tube V2 at a potential such that the flow rate of this tube is relatively high o Under these conditions the tube with a gas atmosphere V5 is on and the inductor It is supplied The motor rotates in a direction which, for the purposes of the discussion is referred to as positive direction. This operation continues in the absence of a control signal. When a signal of negative polarity is applied between the input terminals E of the circuit., it is transmitted on the one hand directly to the anode of diode V1 which is blocked when said voltage has reached a determined value, for example that corresponding to point 22 of the curve in FIG. 2, defined by the voltage divider I2.
From this moment, the flow rate of the V2 tube decreased
On the other hand, the negative polarity signal is applied to capacitor C1. As the amplitude of the signal increases in absolute value, the potential of point A becomes negative and increases in absolute value o The potential of the control grid of tube V3 is lowered and the flow rate
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the tube decreases, which results in an increase in its anode potential. The values of the different elements of the circuit are such that this increase in potential occurs before the amplitude of the signal has reached the value corresponding to point 22 of figure 2.
Under these conditions, the gas tube V5 remains conductive, even after
EMI3.1
The blocking of the VIo diode The motor therefore continues to rotate in the same direction, the control signal continuing to increase in absolute value When the signal has exceeded the point 20 corresponding to the minimum .. its amplitude decreases in absolute value; but the capacitor C1 cannot discharge through the unidirectional conductivity device whose reverse resistance is very high, nor through the resistance 5 of high value also o
It therefore appears in A a decrease in the potentials in absolute value, that is to say that a positive pulse is applied to the grid of the tube V3, the flow rate of which increases, which has the effect of turning off the tube.
EMI3.2
V5 and make the V4 tube conductive.
The motor then turns in the opposite direction. Under these conditions, the control signal redescribes the arc of curve 21 to 20. A new variation in potential is obtained in A which tends to reverse the direction of rotation of the motor. , the capacitor CI is charged to the precise value of the potential of point 20, and practically at the end of an oscillation., the potential of ppint is brought back to the initial value, that is to say that of the mass and the flow rate of the tube V regains the equilibrium value for which the two tubes at

middle of the anode supply transformer T1 of the gas tubes which, for this control,
must be chosen saturable o The AC power supply voltage, for example, is applied to the
EMI3.5
terminals due to the inductance L1 t transmitted to the tubes by the inductance L4 and L5 respectively o The transformer has a fourth winding L2 'arranged in the anode circuit of a tube Y6 at high flow o At equilibrium> the motor is stopped When the equilibrium is broken the motor starts to turn (action V1 and V3) o Point B is brought to a positive potential with respect to mass o This potential is applied to the control grid of stage V6 which is thus made conductive o A significant current
EMI3.6
circulates in the winding L29 saturating the core of the Tlo transformer The current circulating in the inductor is then minimum and the motor turns at
EMI3.7
a maximum speed As it appears.
the negative polarity control signal is transmitted through resistor 7 to the grid of tube V6, which has the effect of reducing the conductivity of the tube and. consequently the current flowing in the winding L2. The stream
EMI3.8
in the inductors is then higher As it appears. the motor speed varies in the same direction as the control voltage.
When the motor is stopped the potential of point B is equal to that of the mass, at the supply voltage of the armature meadows. The flow rate of the V6 tube is then low, the current in the inductor is maximum, which corresponds to a maximum torque of the motor at start-up.
FIG. 3 schematically represents an alternative embodiment of the control circuit according to the invention in which the motor M is automatically stopped during the second passage of the emergency signal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
reur by its maximum value. To facilitate the explanation, the same reference numbers have been used to designate the elements already used in the circuit of FIG. 1.
As can be seen, the control signal (FIG. 2) consisting of a voltage of negative polarity passing through a minimum., Is applied to the input terminals Eo. The diode D1, normally blocked., Charges the capacitor C1.
The control signal is applied to both the grids
EMI4.1
control and to the cathodes of the two normally conductive control tubes V 2 and V 3; these tubes therefore remain conducting as long as the diode D1 is conducting, that is to say as long as the amplitude of the signal increases and until it has decreased by a value sufficient to block D1, are 21 the corresponding point of the curve of figure 2. The capacitor C1 is charged to a voltage corresponding to the value of the minimum (point 20) of the curve of figure 20
EMI4.2
The tubes V 2 and V 3 remain conductive and their operating point being more or less kept fixed despite the application of the command signal, the gas tube C4 remains blocked and the relays ensure the interconnections shown on figure 1.
The power supply terminals of the two inductors of the motor M are represented by A and B, and by C and D the terminals of the power source of the series motor used. To simplify the diagram, it has been assumed that the terminal D is joined to the ground and that the terminal C is joined to the positive terminal of the source of supply voltage to the motor, a source at 24 volts for example. Under these conditions, inductor A is connected to the excitation source and the motor rotates in a certain direction which is called positive for the purposes of the discussion.
EMI4.3
When the control signal reaches point 219, diode D1 is blocked due to the negative charge stored at the terminals of the condenser.
EMI4.4
sateur Ci.
Under these conditions, the potential of the cathode of tube V 2 increases in absolute value, while the potential of the grid of this tube retains its high negative value. Consequently the anode current of tube V2 is reduced and the potential of the first The grid of the tube V4 increases sufficiently to unblock the gas tube The role of the tube V3 is to define the potential of the cathode of the gas tube with respect to that of its grid independently of the variations of the anode supply voltage of

whose work contacts are closed. Under these conditions, inductor A is no longer supplied; on the contrary, inductor B is joined to terminal C via

of unchanged Miaie Rz and of relay R3a Simultaneously a work contact of relay R3 connects a resistor Z in parallel to the terminals of the armature of the motor so as to reduce its speed of rotation in the negative direction; this automatically results in an increase in the developed torque which is necessary to brake and drive the controlled member in the opposite direction As a result of the movement in the opposite direction of the controlled member, the tension
EMI4.8
figure 2e goes back to the same values from 21 to 20.
When the control voltage reaches the value corresponding to 20 (the dio-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of D1 remaining blocked), the grid-cathode potential difference of the tube
V1 regains its Initial value, as well as the flow rate of this tube. As a result, the potential of the control grid of the gas tube V4 returns to its initial value and the tube is blocked o Relay R1 returns to its initial operating position (closed rest contact *). Relay V3 remains in its working position as a result of the self-maintenance provided by one of its working contacts. Relay R2 is energized by closing the rest contact of R1.
The rest contact of R2 is open, the two make contacts are closed o As a result, the supply to inductor B is suddenly interrupted and the motor stops. Closing the intermediate contact of relay R2 maintains the coil excitation.
B2 The position of the controlled device then corresponds to the desired position (maximum control voltage in absolute value). if for some reason, or as a result of an external action, the control signal decreases in absolute value, the capacitor
C1 having remained charged, the cathodic potential of V2 increases ,,, its flow rate decreases., The tube V4 becomes conductive, the relay R1 switches to the working position ,,
and coil B4 of relay R4 is connected between the terminals
C and D from the power source via relays R1 and R2. Since R2 is energized, rectifier D2 has prevented the supply of relay R3 from energizing coil B4 of relay R4. The rest contact of R4 opens and the make contact closes
As shown schematically by capacitor C4, relay R4 is timed o Closing the work contact of relay R4 has the effect of short-circuiting the two armatures of capacitor C1, i.e. - say to unload it., and;) on the other hand, opening the normally closed contact opens the supply circuit for the self-holding contacts of relays R2 and R3. These therefore return to their initial operating conditions.
The time constant of time delay relay R4 is chosen according to that of the discharge circuit of capacitor C1.
At the end of this period, the relay R4, the excitation of which was also cut off by the opening of its rest contact, returns to the initial operating conditions shown in FIG. 3. The circuit returns to the initial operating conditions, the inductor A being supplied and capacitor C1 discharged. As a variant, time delay relay R4 can be replaced by a relay for general start-up of the components thus controlled.
For example, in the case where the invention is applied in radio equipment for the purpose of adjusting elements ensuring the agreement of one or more circuits, \) the relay R4 may be integral with a switching relay. range or of a triggering device for the exploration of a frequency band by the equipment considered
No assumption has been made on the limiting conditions imposed by the nature of the controlled components o It may be necessary, in particular to provide an automatic reverser of the direction of rotation of the motor at the end of travel p when the latter only has to travel 'a limited race
