<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PROCESS FOR THE COOLING AND USE OF THE CALORIFIC POWER OF GASES FROM INTERMITTENT COMBUSTIONS.
The present invention relates to a process for cooling and utilizing the calorific value of gases originating from intermittent combustion, in particular gases escaping from converters working according to the Thomas, Bessemer processes or by blowing oxygen up to Here, the hot gases from these plants were vented into the atmosphere. This results above all in a loss of thermal energy.
The gases escaping into the atmosphere also have extremely harmful effects (dust, dirt, chemical effects, etc.) for the vicinity of these installations, in particular when it is used for blowing the charge, instead of air, pure oxygen One of the objects of the invention is to allow as economical use as possible of the heat thus lost, and thus to rid the neighborhood of the known harmful effects of the gases escaping from these converters. , without a gas purification installation (if such an installation is used) being subjected to the influence of the high temperatures of the gases leaving the converter.
This result is mainly achieved, according to the invention, by conveying the combustion gases to a cooling installation. These gases are thus judiciously cooled, and their calorific value is made usable. According to another feature of the invention, depending on the intervals between the successive combustion processes (intermittent operation), the economizer or the waste heat recuperator, for example a heating boiler, is advantageously operated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
lost, by means of an additional heating device (gas, oil or charcoal fireplace), in order to protect it against harmful cooling.
However, it is also possible to use several converters, one of which is constantly in service, the gases coming from this converter then being directed to the waste heat economizer (boiler). This waste heat boiler is then constantly heated, which is necessary for economical operation of boilers of this type. Finally, according to the invention, the heating gases are directed, where appropriate and after having left the waste heat boiler, to a gas purification installation, so that only pure gases rendered harmless are released into the atmosphere.
The following description, given with reference to the accompanying drawings, given without limitation, will make it possible to better understand the invention.
The overall fig.lieshtuneevne of an installation operating according to the method of the invention.
Figs. 2, 3 and 4 correspond to variants.
All figures are only schematic representations.
According to fig. 1, during the operation of the converter 3, the gases progressing from the combustion are directed to the waste heat boiler 1. These combustion gases flow first over coated heating surfaces, then onto surfaces of: - contact heaters (such as conduction heating surfaces and direct passage or licking heating surfaces). On leaving the waste heat boiler, the heating gases reach directly into the chimney 7 if the bell 11 is open. If these gases are to undergo purification, then the clcohe 11 is kept in the closed position. The heating gases then pass through a purification installation 8 and are then conveyed to the chimney 7 by the fan 12 and the duct section 13.
In the case of a gas washing installation, in order to reduce the liquid requirements as much as possible, the washing liquid is, in the installation, entrained in a circulatory movement, provided that this liquid does not vaporize. This is indicated in dotted lines at 9 in the drawing. The impurities taken from the gases can be evacuated at 14.
During loading and casting, the waste heat boiler is put to rest. But one obtains at least during the operating time of the converter a use or recovery of the calorific value of the gases coming from the combustion.
As can further be seen in FIG. 1, an additional heating device 2 is provided at the inlet of the waste heat boiler 1. During the rest periods of the converter, this device can then supply heat to the economizer or to the waste heat recuperator replacing this converter, so that this recuperator operates continuously, safely and economically. When converter operation is restored, the additional heater is put to rest.
The continuous operation of the waste heat boiler 1 can also be obtained by using several converters (three for example), as shown schematically in fig. 2 During the operation of a converter transmitting its heat to the waste heat boiler 1, the second converter, which has just been operated, is emptied and the third is charged. Once the blowing of the first converter is finished, the one which has been loaded in the interval then goes under the waste heat boiler, and so on.
If the converters 3 are not mobile, we can ensure
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the implementation of the method in a similar manner as shown in figs. 3 and 4, the waste heat recuperator 1 still remaining in service despite the intermittent operation of the converters. In the case shown in fig. 3, the converter to be put into service is each time connected by a mobile duct 5 to the waste heat boiler 1. According to FIG. 4, each fixed converter is in communication with the waste heat boiler 1 by fixed ducts 6.
The combustion gases from the converter 3 which is then in service are thus routed permanently to the waste heat boiler
It is obvious that Ilion can use several converters, as shown schematically in figs 2 and 4 in combination with an additional heater, in order to eliminate any shutdown that may possibly occur.
Modifications can be made to the embodiments described, in the field of technical equivalences, without departing from the invention. The mobile converters are not necessarily moved in a circular fashion, but they can also undergo a rectilinear movement or any other type desired,
towards or from the waste heat boiler. It is obvious that the converters are always placed (seen in plan) and are for example offset with respect to one another, to allow their tilting and the flow of the liquid metal. Finally, it is also possible to combine several converters into a single installation, each converter in the installation being at a different working stage (blowing, casting or loading). In the embodiments to which figso 3 and 4 relate, it is also possible to have more than two converters under the waste heat boiler. Gas scrubbing can be carried out in any suitable manner, possibly using the steam produced in the waste heat boiler.
It will also be noted that, during operation with several converters and an additional heating device, certain elements of the installation can be cleaned or repaired without modifying the operation of the assembly. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, it is also advantageously possible to use not three, but four converters. The converters which do not undergo the blowing can then possibly be put to rest on side tracks. It will be noted in particular that, when using a gas washing installation (wet purification), the cooling of the gases carried out downstream of this installation in the economizer or the waste heat recuperator lowers the consumption of washing liquid. , which is still a favorable feature.
It is obvious that it is possible to use here not only a waste heat economiser or recuperator, for example a waste heat boiler, but also any desired combustion gas cooling installation.
