<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

BUTTERFLY VALVES IMPROVEMENTS.
It is known that butterfly valves are usually constituted by a circular body in which there is a butterfly intended, when it is placed perpendicular to the axis of the valve body, to prevent the passage of the fluid circulating in the pipe on which the valve is placed.
This butterfly is mounted on an axis with which it is integral, said axis projecting outside the valve, and generally being provided with a lever making it possible to actuate the butterfly. This axis which is in the median plane of the butterfly is supported by bearings in the body and a stuffing box prevents fluid leaks.
The axis intersects the contact circumference of the butterfly on the body and this at two diametrically opposed points. As a result, sealing the valve is very difficult to achieve at these two locations.
The object of the present patent is the elimination of the intersection of the axis and the line or of the contact surface of the butterfly and the body of the valve in which it is housed.
According to the invention, the butterfly rotates around a fixed axis, the length of which is less than the diameter of the butterfly; this axis is held by one or more supports and the whole is arranged so that the contact line (or surface) of the throttle inside the valve body is uninterrupted.
The rotation of the butterfly can be obtained by means of a control shaft, passing through the valve body, by means of a stuffing box, at a certain distance from the butterfly, the end of the inner shaft. the valve body being provided with a pinion meshing with a toothed sector

attached to the butterfly.
The throttle can also be controlled by means of a pin passing through the wall of the valve body, the inner end of which is provided with a lever arm which rotates with the throttle. Since the throttle axis and the control axis are at a certain distance from each other, the end of the lever is connected to the throttle by means of a slide system.
The butterfly can also be mounted on an axis which passes through it at its center, perpendicular to the plane of the butterfly, said axis making an angle of 45 with the control axis, the latter passing through the wall of the valve in a direction making 45 with l axis of the valve body.
In this way, it is possible to place the butterfly near one of the connection flanges of the valve, which is particularly advantageous when the seats of the butterfly must be provided with a stainless steel jacket, elastic or not.
The elastic sleeve can advantageously be constituted by a thin metal fur, embossed or stamped so as to be able to serve as a bearing for the butterfly and to be able to be clamped between a base made in the body of the valve and a driven or screwed ring. It can also be constituted by a metal ring having a thinned part which gives it a certain diametral flexibility.
In what follows, with reference to the appended figures, a few embodiments of the invention will be described.
In the drawings:
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 relate to a first embodiment which is shown respectively in section I-I, in section II-II and in section III-III.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 relate to a second embodiment which is shown, respectively, in section IV-IV, section V-V and section VI-VI.
Figs. 7, 8 and 9 relate to a third embodiment which is represented respectively in section VII-VII, in section VIII-VIII, in section IX-IX.
Fig. 10 shows in vertical section a fourth embodiment of the invention.
Figs. 11 and 12, relate to an improvement of the interior of the valve body and are respectively, a sectional elevation and a profile.
These figures are given only by way of example and the devices represented by the drawings are not limiting of the invention which also includes the possible variants and modifications in accordance with its spirit.
Referring to figs. 1, 2 and 3 can be seen at 1, the body of the valve, fitted with its connecting flanges 2. The interior of the body of the valve is fitted with two ribs 3, supporting the fixed shaft 4. This shaft serves as an axis for the butterfly 5, which pivots around said axis and for this purpose the butterfly is provided with a counterplate 6, suitably shaped and fixed to the butterfly.
Note that the length of the axis 6 is less than the internal diameter of the valve body, so that the line, or the contact surface of the butterfly on the internal part of the body, is a circumference, or an ellipse. , uninterrupted.
The throttle control can be done in various ways.
Thus, for example, considering figs. 4 5 and 6, we see
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
that the butterfly 5 is provided with a toothed sector 7, controlled by the pinion
8, placed at the end of axle 9 and the other end of which opens out to the outside, after passing through the stuffing box 10.
Besides its good waterproofness; a geared-down control valve is thus obtained.
When it is desired to obtain a more direct control, it is possible to use the control device shown in FIGS. 7,8 and 9. Referring to them, it can be seen that the valve throttle is actuated by axis 11, entering the valve through the stuffing box 12.
The end of this pin is provided with a lever 13, provided with a buttonhole 26 (fig. 9). The butterfly 5 has a finger 14, engaging in the buttonhole 26. It can be seen that the rotation of the axis 11, in one direction or the other, causes the opening or closing of the valve.
Fig. 10 shows another embodiment in which the control member is inclined relative to the axis of the valve body. We see at 1, the valve body provided with connection flanges 2. The circular butterfly 15 has in its center, a pin 16 engaged in the end of the cranked maneuver pin 17. A collar 18, maintains the butterfly in square.
The elbow lever is inclined by 45, relative to the axis of the valve body and comes out of this body through the stuffing box 19. It can be seen that the rotation of the elbow lever of 180 causes the rotation of the butterfly 15, which comes from stand parallel to the axis of the valve body.
In addition to this arrangement, this embodiment of the butterfly valve has another characteristic residing in the use of an elastic circular jacket 20, placed at one of the ends of the valve body.
This circular liner is held in place by the ring 21, which can be driven out or screwed into the body 1.; In this embodiment, the direction of flow of the fluid is according to the direction of the arrow. In the closed position * the pressure prevailing upstream of the valve applies the jacket to the edge of the butterfly valve.
Of course, similar liners can be provided with regard to the embodiments described above.
These shirts can be made in the manner shown in figs. 11 and 12, on which it can be seen that the lining can be effected by means of a ring 25, housed in a chamber formed in the valve body, near one of its flanges. This jacket has a thinned part which gives the ring a certain diametral flexibility, localized at the thinned part and where, of course, is the closure butterfly (not shown).
