ELEMENT DE CONSTRUC'TION ASSURANT UNE PROTECTION CONTRE LE RAYONNEMENT
ATOMIQUE.

ELEMENT OF CONSTRUCTION ENSURING PROTECTION AGAINST RADIATION
ATOMIC.
The present invention relates to construction elements used against atomic radiation.
We know that nuclear reactions generally leave traces that are harmful to health, coming from certain electronic rays, these traces remaining for a time: more or less long depending on the nature of the raw material used. Radiation is natural or caused - and it is of the utmost importance that man be protected both from scientific laboratory or industrial work and from violent explosions.
We also know that these harmful rays are stopped by some bodies. In particular, the thickness of water, lead or other bodies is known, from which it can be considered that effective protection is achieved.
The construction elements known hitherto consist of bodies of this kind with a fairly considerable thickness, which, on the one hand, make the installations heavier and, on the other hand, are of a high cost price.
These elements forming a screen, if they protect the experimenters and technicians at the very place where the nuclear reactions occur, are not likely to be in current use for the populations.
Without even mentioning the enormous advantage that would be obtained from dwellings designed to be safe from atomic bombardment, which are still a possibility, it should be considered that dwellings in the vicinity of industrial installations carrying out nuclear reactions are permanently in the radiation field with all the dangerous consequences which result therefrom. This is so true that the inhabitants of these regions are all provided with Geiger tubes, so as to allow them to evacuate immediately at the slightest alert.

The present invention takes into account the peculiarities of this problem and aims to provide a construction element which shields man from the radiation originating from the disintegration of the atom while being of simple and easy construction and of a relatively low cost price.
For this purpose, the construction element, object of the invention; is characterized in that it consists of a succession of thin lead layers separated by layers of asbestos or a mixture of cement and asbestos.
In the practical implementation of the invention, the number of such layers is indeterminate and may vary according to the degree of protection to be provided, taking into account the distance from the center of radiation.
The elements can advantageously be manufactured in the form of plates or panels optionally decorated or painted and which can be applied to the walls, the ceiling and the floor of the rooms to be protected.
As shown in the attached drawing, the structural element comprises, in section, a series of layers of lead 1 or other simple body capable of forming a screen against harmful radiation and which are separated by layers of asbestos. 2 or a cement containing asbestos.
The number of these successive layers, as well as their thickness, can vary according to the application cases. These panels can receive an exterior decorative paint layer 3 or any patterns in relief (not shown).
The succession of layers of lead and asbestos has the effect of rapidly annihilating by the phenomenon of refraction; the intensity of penetration of harmful rays. Protective elements are therefore produced in this manner which are appreciably thinner than those which are used to date.
