PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX ROBINETS D'ISOLEMENT ET AUX ASSEMBLAGES A ROBINETo
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

IMPROVEMENTS TO ISOLATED VALVES AND VALVE ASSEMBLIES
The present invention relates to isolation valves and to valve assemblies suitable for closing pipes and, in particular, to valves of the type called gate valves intended for use in water, steam or gas pipes. , at elevated pressures and temperatures In the practical use of such valves, the difficulties to be overcome are frequently due to stresses produced by temperature differences manifesting themselves under different operating conditions, in particular when the pipeline is put into service or out of service, when the temperature difference between the various parts of the valve can be significant,
which causes stresses generated by temperature differences, stresses which give rise to leaks at the seals and, by causing the valve body to deform, preventing the valve from resting properly on the seat or seats.
An object of the invention is to provide a gate valve which meets the required conditions, in which the possibilities of stress due to temperature differences and the possibilities of leakage on the bearing faces of the valve are reduced to a minimum. minimum, at the same time as maximum access is made possible for the maintenance of the bearing faces or seat of the valve, when this becomes necessary.
According to the invention, a valve for controlling the flow of a fluid comprises a valve body formed of a central element of circular cross section and two seat elements of circular cross section, coaxial with each other. other and penetrating diametrically into the central element.
One end of the central element can be tightened to present an axial orifice just large enough to allow the introduction of a rod connected to a movable shutter between the two seat elements. The other end of the central element can be closed by a self-sealing cover. In this way, the flanges are removed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The walls of at least the central element are preferably of uniform thickness.
Flanges can be provided on the outer ends of the seat elements which, in fact, perform the dual role of seat and connecting pipes.
The inner ends of the seat members preferably have a front surface of hard material, eg austenitic stainless steel (or the like), deposited on the seats and preferably machined before said elements are welded together, since in practice it is usually found that, when independent seats are fixed to seat support elements in the usual manner, by screwing, by expansion, by contraction or by pinning , such seats tend to come off during service, as a result of the difference in expansion coefficients between the material constituting the seat supports and that constituting the seats.
The shutter may have the form of a valve formed of two valve discs arranged back to back, each disc cooperating with its respective seat, the two discs being forced to move away from each other. by a spring arranged between them.
The valve stem may be provided with a shoe having a circular orifice in which one of the two obturator discs is centered by an annular projection provided on the rear face of the disc. The other shutter disc has, on its rear face, a similar annular protrusion which fits into the hole of the annular protrusion of the back of the first disc, so that the two discs are centered with respect to each other. and in the shoe which is attached to the end of the valve stem.
A housing for a gasket for preventing leakage along the rod is preferably integral with the central member.
The central element may be provided to receive an element in the form of a stirrup arranged to guide a slide fixed rigidly to the valve stem and arranged to prevent rotation of the rod, this slide acting as a stop to limit the movement of the valve. rod and to reduce the stress thereof. At least one indicator index may be provided on the slide to move relative to an indicator plate attached to the yoke, to indicate the position of the valve plug.
The self-sealing cover may include an inner cover member and an outer cover member connected to each other, for example by a set of captives or studs, so that they can be brought together. the other; there is provided a stop ring disposed between the two cover elements and partially resting in a groove of the central element, a sealing ring made of hard material, a support. against the protruding part of the ring, on the inwardly facing side of the central element, and a sealing ring of relatively soft material resting on the hard material ring, one side of the ring of soft material seal being arranged to abut against a mounting facet provided on the inner cover element.
The seal ring of relatively soft material may have a substantially triangular or substantially circular cross section. However, it is possible to use a ring having another cross section.
The material of which the hard ring is made can be stainless steel and the material of the soft joint ring can be soft iron, soft Monel or other relatively malleable metal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In addition to the valve, hereinafter (for clarity of the discussion) referred to as the main valve, an auxiliary bypass valve may be provided having an auxiliary valve body constructed in the same manner as the valve body. main and formed of two auxiliary seat elements of circular cross-section entering a central auxiliary element of circular cross-section, of pipes (for the fluid) extending from the auxiliary seat elements and entering the seat elements respective main body,
the interior of the auxiliary central element being in communication with the interior of the main central element.
The inner ends of the auxiliary seat members may have faces formed from a hard material coating.
A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which
Figo 1 is a longitudinal section, along a vertical plane, through the axis of the valve; Fig. 2 is an elevational view of one end of the valve with, in cross section, the bypass valve; Fig. 3, finally, is a section taken along line 3-3 of Fig.2.
In the drawing, a central element is designated by 1 and by 2 and 3 seat elements penetrating diametrically into the central element 1 and welded to this element. The central element 1 is constricted at 4 to present an axial orifice large enough to allow the passage of a rod 5 connected to a shutter 6 moving between the front seats 7 and 8 of the seat elements 2 and 3. respectively. The end of the central element 1, opposite the constricted end, can be closed by a self-sealing cover comprising an inner cover element 9 and an outer cover element 10 connected together by at least one prisoner 11. .
12 denotes a support ring formed of sections to facilitate its insertion into a groove 13 presented by the central element 1; 14 denotes a sealing ring of hard material abutting the protruding portion of the bearing ring 12 and 15 denotes a sealing ring of substantially triangular cross section and relatively soft material, the inner cover element having a facet 16 arranged to bear against the sealing ring 15.
The seats 7 and 8 of the valve are formed by deposits of hard material on the seat elements 2 and 3, the hard material being deposited before said seat elements are introduced into the central element 1 and welded to the latter, and they are preferably machined before the introduction of the seat elements 2 and 3 into the central element 1. The shutter 6, which, in this embodiment has the form of a valve, is formed of two discs 17 and 18 that a spring 19 interposed between the discs 17 and 18 moves away from each other and brings into contact with the valve seats 7 and 8. A shoe 20 has been designated which connects the rod 5 to the shutter 6. The discs 17 and 18 are held coaxially with respect to each other by annular projections 21 and 22.
The central element 1 is arranged to receive an element 23 in the form of a stirrup and provided with grooves 24. A slide is denoted by 25 which is rigidly fixed to the valve stem 5 and which comprises dowels in protrusions 26 penetrating into the grooves 24. A handwheel 17 is keyed to a core 28 which engages the threaded upper portion of the rod 5. An indicator plate is designated by 29 which is attached to the yoke 23 for use. indicate the position of the shutter 6.
The bypass valve consists of an auxiliary central element 30 welded to the main central element 1; are designated by 31 and 32 auxiliary seat elements which penetrate into the central element at the-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
xiliary and which are welded to it. Connectors 33 and 34 connect the interior of the auxiliary seat elements 31 and 32 to the main seat elements 2 and 3 respectively. The interior of the auxiliary central element 30 opens into the interior of the main central element 1.
An auxiliary shutter which is fixed to an auxiliary control rod 36 carrying an auxiliary slider 37 provided with pins passing through grooves in an auxiliary yoke 38 is designated by an auxiliary shutter which is fixed to an auxiliary control rod 36 in the grooves presented by the slider 37. The auxiliary yoke 38 indicating the position of the auxiliary shutter 35. An auxiliary handwheel 39 has been designated to actuate the auxiliary bypass valve.
In practice, the deformation of the valve body due to stresses due to temperature differences is reduced to a minimum due to the circular cross section of the central body 1 and the seat elements 2 and 3. The leaks along the seats 7 and 8 are therefore small, and the large opening made in the central element and closed by the self-sealing cover provides easy access to the seats for maintenance, while eliminating screw joints which are susceptible to damage. tible to leak under the action of forces due to temperature differences.
Although it can be easily removed when desired, the self-sealing cover provides a seal which gradually becomes all the more effective as the pressure in the central element 1 increases.
When the pressure increases in the central element 1, the load on the inner cover 9 causes this cover to tend to move outwards, the facet 16 of this inner cover 9 being clamped against the ring of. sealing 15. The beveled shape of the ring and the relatively soft material of which it is made both cause the ring 15 to form a tight seal between the inner cover 9 and the inner wall of the element. central 1. An increase in pressure in the central element 1 simply increases the sealing effect produced by the sealing ring 15. The arrangement of the valve has the additional advantage that there is no seal. The seal, in the body of the valve, on the path of the caliper 23, making it difficult to align the rod 5, its gland and the caliper 23.
If it becomes necessary, at any time, to rectify the seats 7 and 8 of the seat elements 2 and 3, it is sufficient simply to remove the self-sealing cover, the resulting opening in the element. central 1 providing all the space to rectify said seats 7 and 8, without removing the valve. The self-sealing cover is removed by unscrewing the prisoner's nut 11, removing the outer cover 10, pushing the inner cover back into the central element 1, removing the stop ring 12 which is in sections. , then by removing the inner cover with the sealing rings 14 and 15. The self-sealing cover is replaced by inserting and assembling the different parts in reverse order.
When a valve as described is incorporated in a high pressure system, great pressure is exerted on the shutter 6, when the valve is closed. A large unbalanced load then exerts its force on the shutter and seat on the downstream side of the valve and maintains the valve in the closed position. Any attempt to move the shutter will almost certainly cause seizure and damage to the respective seat.
The presence of the auxiliary bypass valve makes it possible to eliminate these conditions of imbalance since it suffices to simply open the bypass valve first, which at least substantially equalizes the pressures. on both sides of the shutter and simultaneously allows the fluid to enter the interior of the central element The pressure is thus equalized in all the cavities of the valve body and on the valve discs 17 and 18, so as the shutter
6 can be moved with minimal effort relative to seat elements 2 and 3.
