<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

NEW WATER-REPELLENT COATINGS $ FOR MASONRY.
It has long been known to treat masonry coverings, the surface of which is most often porous, with bodies intended to protect them from the penetration of water and humidity. For example, various paraffins, waxes and metal stearates have already been used for this purpose.
More recently, it has been proposed to take advantage of the well-known water-repellent properties of organopolysiloxane compounds to prepare water-repellent solutions for bricks, mortar, concrete, building stones, etc.
Dilute solutions of organopolysiloxane resins have been used in particular for this purpose. However, such solutions have the major drawback of being of very uneven effectiveness depending on the nature of the support; Thus, for example, the results obtained using solutions of organosilicon compounds on a plaster support, or on plaster-based materials, have never been satisfactory o On the other hand, these water-repellent coatings have poor resistance to the alkaline action of the coating. most masonry materials.
It has now been found that by combining organopolysiloxane resins with variable amounts of a titanium ester such as butyl titanium, one obtains by application, according to the usual techniques, mixtures thus obtained on all masonry materials, also well those based on cement and bricks than those based on plaster. excellent water repellency of said materials, in interior coverings as in exterior coverings.
The organopolysiloxane resins which can be used for carrying out the present invention are more especially methyl or methyl-phenyl-polysiloxane resins in which the ratio of the number of hydrocarbon substituents to the number of silicon atoms (ratio 11 / Si) is between 1 and 1 , 7.
The proportions of butyl titanate can vary within very wide limits, from 5 to 1000%, and preferably from 10 to 100%, relative to
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
organopolysiloxane resin.
The modes of association of the above components, organopolysiloxane resins and titanium esters, are also quite diverse. It is generally convenient to dissolve the organopolysiloxane resin and butyl titanate in a common solvent and directly use the solution thus obtained to treat the materials to be waterproofed. Among the many solvents or mixtures of solvents suitable for this purpose, mention may be made of those derived from coal; xylene, toluene or petroleum derivatives such as white spirit, gasoline or their mixtures.
The material can also be treated first with a solution of the titanium ester, then after a variable drying time depending on the nature of the support and which can range from a few hours to several days, with an organopolysiloxane resin solution.
According to a particular embodiment of the invention, it is possible to cause the formation of the resin in the material to be waterproofed by replacing, in one of the above techniques, the organopolysiloxane resin with a hydrolyzable organosilicon compound having a degree substitution (ratio $ / Si) within the limits indicated above. In this connection, methyl tri- (chloro-2-ethoxy) silane has been shown to be particularly advantageous.
The application on the support can be done by the various usual means: brush, gun, spray, etc.
A very good water-repellent coating is thus obtained which can be applied to all masonry materials, including plaster, which does not block the pores of the material, and exhibits exceptional quality even on supports with a strongly alkaline reaction.
An additional advantage of the solutions which are the subject of the present invention is that organic compounds such as paraffins, waxes, stearates can be combined with them, without modifying the excellent resistance of the coatings obtained.
The examples below are given by way of indication but not by way of limitation in order to illustrate some embodiments of the present invention.
The parts are understood by weight.
First of all, according to the methods well known and described in the literature (in particular see ROCHOW, Chemistry of the Silicones, Wiley editor, 2nd edition 1951, pages 90-91), two resin solutions having the following composition are prepared: - Solution A: with a 60% solution in toluene of methylpolysiloxanes with a CH3 / Si ratio = 1.50 ("resin A") obtained from the hydrolysis in toluene medium of a mixture of trimethylchlorosilane, dimethyldichlorosilane and methyltrichlorosilane.
- Solution B: constituted by a mixture of equal weight: a) of the solution of resin A above b) and of a 60% solution of methylpolysiloxanes with a CH3 / Si ratio = 1.30 coming from the hydrolysis d 'a mixture of methyltrichlorosilane and dimethyl-dichlorosilane in toluene-butanol medium. In what follows, the dry extract of solution B is called resin B.

The plaster specimens thus treated are dried in air for 15 days. After which they are subjected to a hydrostatic test consisting in applying to the surface of each specimen a water column of 35 cm. height.
The more water-repellent the material, the slower the drop in the level of the water column. The relative difference in level is the ratio between the lowering of the level of the water column for a treated specimen to the corresponding lowering for a control specimen.
