CENTRIFUGEUSE.
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>

CENTRIFUGE.
The present invention relates to a centrifuge suitable in particular for separating bacteria and microscopic solid particles, contained in liquids, such as milk. It relates, in particular, to a special arrangement of a centrifuge bowl, in which the liquid to be treated is introduced, continuously, in the vicinity of the axis of the bowl, in a direction substantially parallel to this axis.
A continuous centrifuge is known, serving among other things to skim milk and comprising a bowl rotating about a vertical axis. In this known centrifuge, the liquid to be treated enters the bowl via a substantially axial distribution tube, provided at its lower end with a frustoconical expansion. This frustoconical expansion carries a stack of frustoconical discs, called "plates"., Which are spaced from one another and are intended to hinder as much as possible the movement of the liquid, in the axial direction, without hindering too much. strong measure its displacement in. radial direction.
This known centrifuge is well suited for skimming milk, but it does not allow a significant reduction in the bacterial germ content thereof. This is due to the fact that this known centrifuge
does not develop sufficient centrifugal force to allow the bacteria to separate. In addition, due to the high kinematic viscosity
milk at room temperature, bacterial cells, whose specific gravity is only slightly greater than 1, can hardly be separated from this liquid.
A process is known, thanks to which it is possible to achieve an almost complete separation of bacteria and other microorganisms contained in liquids, such as milk, this process consisting in lowering, by heating, the kinematic viscosity of the liquid to be treated, preferably up to 'at <EMI ID = 1.1>
develop a high separation force, for example 30,000 g.
The quantitative separation of bacteria and other microorganisms contained in a liquid, such as milk, by the process specified above is, however, only possible if all disturbances or contrary currents in the liquid are avoided during its centrifugation. However, such disturbances or contrary currents are manifestly manifested in known centrifuges, and in particular in that described above.
The present invention therefore relates to a centrifuge, in which the abovementioned disturbances and contrary currents are avoided, which makes it possible, by application of the known method specified above, to carry out a quasi-quantitative separation of the bacteria and the microscopic particles contained. in viscous liquids, such as milk.
The centrifuge according to the invention is essentially characterized by the fact that between the central part of the bowl and its periphery is provided at least one liquid guide duct, the dimensions of which are chosen, according to the speed of movement of the liquid in the bowl and as a function of the kinematic viscosity of this liquid, so that the flow regime of the liquid towards the periphery of the bowl is substantially laminar, that is to say that the Reynolds number or coefficient is at most equal to 800.
We know that the coefficient or Reynolds number is characterized by the following expression:
<EMI ID = 2.1>
in which V denotes the flow velocity of a fluid, L the dimensions
<EMI ID = 3.1>
To obtain a laminar flow of the liquid to be treated in a centrifuge according to the invention, knowing the speed of movement of the liquid from the central part of the bowl towards its periphery, this speed being a function of the separation force supplied by the rotation of the bowl at a determined speed, and knowing the kinematic viscosity of the liquid to be treated in the centrifuge, it will be easy for those skilled in the art to calculate the dimensions that will have to be given to the guide duct provided in the centrifuge according to the invention, in order to that, by application of the expression defining the Reynolds coefficient, this coefficient is at most 800, which will have the effect of giving the liquid in question a laminar flow regime allowing quantitative separation of bacteria and other microorganisms,
According to a particular embodiment of the centrifuge according to the invention, the central part of the bowl is in communication with the periphery of the latter, by at least one guide duct, extending substantially in the radial direction, this duct being connected to the central distribution tube and terminating at a certain distance from the peripheral wall of the bowl. This guide duct can be delimited by one of the funds of the
<EMI ID = 4.1>
of the duct in question being calculated so that the liquid flowing in this duct is in laminar regime.
According to another embodiment of the centrifugation according to the invention, there are provided between the central part of the bowl and its periphery, partitions delimiting several concentric annular chambers, constituting liquid guide conduits communicating with one another. , so as to cause the liquid to travel a zig-zag path from the central part of the bowl to its periphery. Also in this case, the section of the annular chambers will be calculated so that the liquid passing through them is in laminar regime.
The partitions forming the aforementioned annular chambers can be cylindrical and parallel to the axis of the bowl.
These chambers communicate with each other by passages formed alternately in the vicinity of one end of the bowl and in the vicinity of the other end of the latter. Thus, when the bowl of the centrifuge is mounted so as to rotate about a vertical axis, the partitions forming the aforementioned annular chambers are vertical and are alternately secured to the lower base and to the upper base of the bowl, each partition ending at a a certain distance from the bottom opposite to the bottom to which it is subject, so as to ensure communication between the concentric annular chambers.
To promote the substantially complete elimination of bacteria and other microorganisms in the centrifuge according to the invention, pre'-. fère that the peripheral wall of the bowl is lined internally with baffles.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto, which represent schematically and by way of example only, two embodiments of a centrifuge according to the invention.
In these drawings:
- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a centrifuge bowl according to the invention, and
- Figure 2 is also a vertical section showing a different embodiment of a centrifuge bowl,
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
In Figure 1, there is shown a bowl 1 of a centrifuge, provided with a cover 2 and means 3 for securing this cover on the bowl. To ensure tightness, a rubber seal 4 is provided between the periphery of the cover and the upper edge of the bowl 1.
The cover 2 carries, facing a central opening 5, a nozzle 6, through which the liquid to be treated, for example milk, enters the centrifuge. The liquid entering the centrifuge is brought to the vicinity of the bottom 7 of the bowl, by a distribution tube 8, then it is guided along this bottom, through a guide duct 9 connected to the distribution tube 8 and ending at a certain distance from the peripheral wall 10 of the bowl. This duct 9 is delimited by the bottom 7 of the bowl and by a horizontal partition 28 connected to a vertical partition 29 delimiting with the peripheral wall a sedimentation chamber 30.
Taking into account the speed of movement of the liquid in the guide duct 9 and the kinematic viscosity of this liquid, this duct 9 is given dimensions such as the Reynolds number, determined.
by the expression given above, is not greater than 800. Thus a laminar flow of the liquid is achieved, which allows, after adjustment of the kinematic viscosity of the liquid and application of a high separation force, to achieve a quantitative separation bacteria and other microorganisms contained in the liquid.
These bacteria and microorganisms are deposited with the sediment along the peripheral wall 10 of the bowl. The liquid freed from bacteria and microorganisms comes out of the bowl through holes 11 in the cover 2.
In Figure 1, as in Figure 2, the bottom 7 of the bowl centrally carries a frustoconical sleeve 12 directed inwards, in which adapts to hard friction a spindle 13 carried by a rotating shaft 14.
In Figure 2, there is provided between the central distribution tube 8 and the peripheral wall 10 of the bowl 1, a series of partitions 15, 16, 17 and
18, delimiting annular chambers 19, 20, 21, 22, communicating with each other, so as to cause the liquid to travel a zig-zag path of the tube
distribution 8 to the peripheral wall 10 of the bowl, as shown by
arrows.
The concentric annular chambers 19, 20, 21 and 22 communicate with each other through passages 23, 24, 25 and 26, established alternately
near the lid 2 and near the bottom 7 of the bowl. Among partitions 15 to 18,
which are integral in rotation with the bowl, the partitions 15 and 17 are secured to the bottom 7 of the latter and end at a certain distance from the neck.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
sounds 16 and 18 are subject to cover 2 and end at a certain
distance from the bottom 7, forming the lower passages 24 and 26.
As for the guide duct 9 shown in Figure 2,
the section of the annular chambers 19 to 22 is adjusted so that the liquid passes through them in a laminar current.
On the inner faces of the partitions 15, 16, 17 and 18 sediments are deposited. On partition 15 the most
coarse and on the peripheral wall the finest sediments, including
bacteria and microscopic solid particles. To ensure separation
all bacteria and facilitate their sedimentation on the peripheral wall
<EMI ID = 6.1>
itself that instead of these baffles, other equivalent arrangements can be provided. Thus, the inner surface of the peripheral wall can be corrugated or provided with any protrusions.
<EMI ID = 7.1>
to the embodiments described above and that various modifications may be made to the constitution, form and arrangement of
<EMI ID = 8.1>
modifications do not contradict the object of the claims
