PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURING OF STEEL (AUTOMATENSTAHL) RICH IN NITROGEN, POOR
BREATHTAKING AND NOT CALM
The invention relates to a process for the production of a low blowhole, non-quenched steel (Automatenstahl) with a nitrogen content of 0.01 to 0.03%, especially suitable for achieving high cutting speeds for shaping. by machine tool and to achieve a good surface appearance.
It is known that, when manufacturing steels with such properties, the nitrogen content and the resulting brittleness play an important role. In cases where; it was primarily a question of having a good surface appearance and less of achieving good mechanical properties, therefore Thomas steel was preferably used.
However, Thomas steel does not meet all the requirements for the surface quality of rotating machine parts. The reason is that the Thomas steel not quenched as air-jet refining steel. is very rich in gas and, therefore, very prone to blistering.
The inclusions of manganese sulphide and iron sulphide, which must be distributed very evenly over the sections, are of paramount importance for the machining of steel (Automatenstahl).
In shaping, by machine tool, they act as a lubricant and thereby allow high machining speeds o Accumulations of manganese sulphide and iron sulphide in the segregations of blisters are nevertheless detrimental, since, in this form, they are distributed unevenly over the section.
At high concentration they give heterogeneity in the physical properties of the steel and, consequently, they also often determine, on the machined surface, places of different appearance, (the openings are generally more bare) o If one tries, which often happens, to soak such

parts, for example elements of sewing machines, in case of carburizing, there will be observed in the places of the segregations of blowholes disturbances in the operation of the cementation, since the segregations prevent the diffusion of carbon.
We could not therefore use the steels refined with the air jet and not calmed for rotating elements to be hardened on the surface, but we had to make the steels poor in segregations by treatment with silica and aluminum: ro1nitml . In this case, we had to admit in addition the disadvantageous effects of the silica content on the machining and, when using aluminum, the harmful effect of the clay on the machine tools. - age. In addition, caliber steel is more expensive, owing to the lower yield of good material.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate the difficulties presented and pursues the aim of providing a steel which is poor in blisters and segregations, which can therefore also be used uncured as steel (Autcmatenstahl) and which, by due to its nitrogen content, has the properties of good machining at high cutting speeds and a good surface appearance.
Another object of the invention consists in an improved thermal balance of the manufacturing process and in the elimination of the deoxidizing means.
The present invention is based on the refining of molten crude iron with oxygen blown from above onto the bath. In this type of refining, the blown oxygen produces a reaction center, in which the carbon in the bath burns with the formation of carbon monoxide. The formation of gas causes the bath to move, in which all parts of the bath are revolved and pass the reaction center. The known methods of this kind, however, have as their object the production of a steel as low as possible in nitrogen, with the cold deformation properties of Siemens-Martin steel, and use a blowing gas with oxygen as pure as possible - 97% and more.
With respect to this technique, the object of the invention is a process for the manufacture of a steel (Automatenstahl) poor in blisters and not quenched, with a nitrogen content of 0.01 to 0.03%. The process is characterized by the fact that a blowing gas uses 80 to 95% oxygen and the remainder of nitrogen and that by blowing this gas onto the surface of a molten crude iron in a converter, a high temperature reaction center is produced.
In particular, it has been found that, at an elevated temperature, in the reaction center, a decrease in the oxygen content and, simultaneously, an increase in the nitrogen content of a few percent is already sufficient to increase the absorption capacity of the oxygen. nitrogen of the steel, the real advantage of the oxygen refining process over the known air jet refining process - namely the improvement in the heat balance - being retained.
The production of the necessary temperature in the reaction center is carried out in a simple way, for example by keeping a small distance between the nozzle and the bath, which can be about 100 - 250 mm, or because that the impact surface of the blowing jet is kept relatively small compared to the surface of the weld pool. When the ratio is 1/10 to 1/36, sufficient temperatures are obtained. According to a special embodiment of the invention, it is possible to introduce, into the bath, nitrogen in place or in addition to compounds in molecular form containing it, such as ammonia or other nitrogen gases. .
In many cases there. It is also useful to blow into the molten metal, nitrogen or nitrogen gases by a feed, separated on the surface or towards the end of the operation with a corresponding pressure.
By the cooperation of the determined nitrogen supply of 5 - 20%, the high temperature in the reaction center and the special kind of affair

Finishing under bath inversion, one produces, in the manner described, steels (Automatenstahl) which do not require further deoxidation, can be cast in molds in an un-calmed state and have, after alloying known with sulfur, to a particular extent, the properties allowing high cutting speeds and a good surface appearance.
