SOUDEUSE AUTOMATIQUE.
L'invention a pour buts de procurer: principalement, une soudeuse à arc automatique perfectionnée de construction relativement simple, avec un minimum d'éléments mécaniques et dont le coût de fabrication, d'entretien et de réparation est relativement faible; une soudeuse à arc automatique dans laquelle l'électrode et la pièce peuvent se déplacer avec précision en réponse à des signaux de commande; une soudeuse à arc automatique marchant aussi bien avec du cou- rant continu qu'avec du courant alternatif appliqué entre électrode de soudu- re et pièce et pouvant être facilement adaptée à la soudure en courant conti- nu ou en courant alternatif; une soudeuse à arc automatique dans laquelle l'avancement de l'électrode de soudure et le déplacement de la pièce sont conjugués de maniè- re à obtenir une opération de soudure de qualité ;
une soudeuse à arc automatique dans laquelle l'avancement de l'électrode de soudure est commandé en fonction d'une différence de potentiel entre l'électrode et la pièce, et dans laquelle le battement de l'électrode est supprimé;
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
respectivement, soit positive.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

AUTOMATIC WELDER.
The present invention relates, in general, to electrical discharge devices and more especially to automatic arc welders.
The automatic arc welders built so far have several shortcomings. They are heavy and bulky, consist of many complicated mechanical parts, are relatively expensive to manufacture, maintain and repair. Furthermore, such welders operate slowly and do not lend themselves to high speed fabrication.
The object of the invention is to provide: mainly, an improved automatic arc welder of relatively simple construction, with a minimum of mechanical elements and of which the cost of manufacture, maintenance and repair is relatively low; an automatic arc welder in which the electrode and the workpiece can move with precision in response to control signals; an automatic arc welder operating both with direct current and with alternating current applied between the welding electrode and the workpiece and which can be easily adapted to welding with direct current or with alternating current; an automatic arc welder in which the advancement of the welding electrode and the movement of the part are combined so as to obtain a quality welding operation;
an automatic arc welder in which the advancement of the welding electrode is controlled according to a potential difference between the electrode and the workpiece, and in which the flapping of the electrode is suppressed;
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
a new motor control circuit; a new electronic circuit; a new phase shift control circuit for an electric discharge device; a new control circuit for an electric discharge device; a new relay circuit; secondly, an automatic arc welding system which can be put into working order without endangering the operator, by means of adjustment switches.
According to the invention, the welding electrode is advanced by means of a direct current motor supplied through one or the other of a pair of discharge devices, preferably thyratrons, connected in anti-parallel. When it is conductive, one of the discharge devices rotates the motor so as to advance the electrode towards the workpiece and the other device, when it is conductive, rotates the motor so as to move the electrode away from the workpiece. room. These discharge devices are selectively controlled by an electronic control circuit which is sensitive to the potential difference between electrode and workpiece. When the thyratron which advances the electrode towards the workpiece is made conductive, an additional element is introduced into the control circuit, to prevent flapping.
This element may have a polarity such that it increases or decreases the conductivity of the conductive thyratron, depending on the nature of the operation considered. The control circuit also includes devices which maintain the conductivity of the discharge device which advances the electrode towards the work, very low until the establishment of the arc.
According to the invention, the apparatus also comprises a motor for moving the part. This motor is slaved to the control circuit of the discharge devices so as not to be started as long as the arc is not established, and to only advance the part when the devices which maintain the conductivity of the device discharge, which advances the electrode towards the workpiece at a low value, have been removed from the control system.
The apparatus according to the invention is started by actuating an on switch and stopped by a stop switch. When the latter is activated at the end of a weld, the electrode is first moved away from the workpiece at an accelerated rate and then the current supply circuit of the probe opens.
In order for the invention to be better understood, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which FIGS. 1 and 1A taken together constitute a circuit diagram of a preferred embodiment of the invention.
The apparatus shown in the drawing comprises a table or workpiece support H on which the workpiece W is mounted. The welding electrode R is mounted above the table so as to be able to be brought together and lifted up from the table. room. The actual devices for mounting and moving the welding electrode do not form part of the invention and are shown without any detail. They are symbolically represented with two rollers 3 and 5.
According to the invention, the welding is carried out by means of an electrode R of the consumable type. The electrode is brought to the workpiece by a DC motor MR shown schematically driving one of the rollers 3.
The table H carrying the piece to be welded is movable so as to gradually produce the weld bead. This movement is performed by a second motor MW shown schematically connected to the table.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The apparatus is shown mounted for alternating current. The alternating current comes from power bars L1 and L2 which can be those of the industrial network and is applied between the welding electrode R and the part W by the secondary S of a welding transformer T, the primary of which is P can be connected to the bars L1 and L2 by closing a normally open contact 7 of a relay 9 which can be called the voltage application relay.
The electrode advancement motor MR is supplied by the secondary S1 of a second transformer T1, the primary of which Pl is supplied by the bars L1 and L2, through a pair of normally open contacts 11 and 13 of a another relay 15 which may be referred to as a feed motor relay.
The workpiece movement motor MW is supplied directly by the bars L1 and L2, through normally open contacts 17 of the feed motor relay 15 and a normally closed contact 19 of a third relay 21 which may be referred to as relay for slaving the part to the electrode, since it is used to slav the movement of the part W to the advancement of the electrode Ro
The MR motor is controlled alternately by one and the other of two thyratrons VT and VA, VT possibly being called the advancement thyratron and VA recoil thyratron.
The anodes 23 and the cathodes 25 of these thyratrons are connected in anti-parallel between the brushes of the MR motor and the secondary Sl of the supply transformer of the Tlo motor When the advancing thyratron VT is conducting, the MR motor turns so as to advance the electrode R towards the workpiece W, and when the recoil thyratron VA is conducting, the motor rotates so as to move the electrode away from the workpiece. In series with the motor and the advancement thyratron is the primary P2 of a transformer T2 which delivers an anti-flapping voltage
Each of the VT and VA thyratrons is controlled by an auxiliary AVT and AVA thyratron.
The control is effected by means of respective transformers TT and TA, the secondaries ST and SA of which are connected each time respectively between the control electrode 27 and the cathode 25 of the associated main thyratron VT or V1, with a suitable polarization. In order to stabilize the operation of each main thyratron VT and VA, a capacitor 29 and a resistor 33, and a capacitor 31 and a resistor 35 having the desired values are put in parallel with the respective secondaries ST and S1.
Each auxiliary thyratron AVT and AVA is supplied by a sec- tion of secondary S3T and S3A respectively, from a transformer with several secondaries T3o Each of the S3T and S3A secondaries has end taps and an intermediate tap, the cathode 37 of each associated auxiliary thyratron AVT and AVA being connected to an intermediate socket o The anode 39 of the auxiliary advance thyratron AVT is connected to an end socket of the secondary section S3T by a primary PT of the associated control transformer TT and the normally closed contacts 41 of an adjustment switch IA for removing the welding electrode R from the part Wo The anode 39 of the auxiliary recoil thyra- tron AVA is connected to an end plug of the section S3A by a primary
PA of an associated control transformer TA and the normally closed contacts 43 of an adjustment switch IT to advance the welding electrode R towards the workpiece o The control electrode 45 of each of the auxiliary thyratrons AVT and AVA is connected respectively to the remaining end taps of sections S3T and S3A by suitable resistors and capacitors 47, 51 and 49, 53 respectively.
During the half-periods of the network when the anode 39 of each auxiliary thyratron is in turn negative, the end tap connected respectively to the capacitor 51 or 53 is each time positive. The current circulates between the control electrode 45 and the cathode 37 of the associated auxiliary thyratron and charges the capacitor 51 or 53 so that its armature which is connected to the control electrode 45 is negative and its armature connected to the cathode 37 by a section 55 or 57 of the corresponding secondary S3T or S3A
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
respectively, be positive.
At the start of the half-periods of the network where the anode 39 of each of the auxiliary thyratrons AVT and AVA is in turn positive, with respect to the cathode 37, the capacitor 51 or 53 in the corresponding control circuit applies a bias which maintains the thyratron not, conductor. This polarization is discharged during this half period in the corresponding half of a double triode V, one half of which is associated with each auxiliary thyratron. These halves of the double V triode may be referred to as the advancement triode and the recoil triode.
The anode 59 of the advancement triode is connected by normally closed contacts 61 of the workpiece and electrode servo relay 21 and by the normally closed contact 41 to the anode 39 of the auxiliary thyratron. AVT advancement link and therefore to an end socket of the associated secondary S3T.
When the normally closed contact 61 opens, the anode 59 is connected to the anode 39 by a resistor 63o The cathode 65 of the double triode V is connected to the junction point of the capacitor 51 and the associated resistor 47 The capacitor 51 can therefore be discharged in the advancement triode 59-65 of the lamp Vo The anode 67 of the recoil triode of the lamp V is connected by the closed contact 43 to the anode 39 of the thyratron of recoil AVA and to an end plug of the corresponding secondary S3A. Common cathode 65 is also connected to the junction point of corresponding resistor 49 and capacitor 53. The capacitor 53 can then also be discharged via 67-65, the recoil triode.
The discharge rate of the capacitors 51 and 53 is determined by the conductivity of the triodes 59-65 and 67-65 of the lamp V and in turn determines the moments, in the half-periods of the network, when the auxiliary thyratrons AVT and AVA are made conductive so as to ignite the main thyra- trons VT and VA. When each of the thyratrons AVT, VT and AVA, VA is made conductive is precisely determined by an alternating voltage superimposed on the potential supplied by the associated capacitor 51 or 53.
The advancement triode 59-65 can be switched off by normally open contacts 69 of the advance adjustment switch IT. The recoil triode 67-65 can be switched off by normally open contacts 71 of the recoil adjustment switch IA. When one of these switches is closed, the associated capacitor is rapidly discharged by the closed contact of the closed switch and the associated main thyratron VT or VA is made conductive early in the positive half-periods of the network.
The double triode V is controlled as a function of the amplitude of the voltage at the terminals of the electrode R and of the part W. This potential comes from a rectifier RX connected between electrode and part, its output current supplying a resistance 73 through a filter inductor 75.
Resistor 73 may be referred to as a potential difference resistor between electrode and workpiece. A filter capacitor 77 is placed across resistor 73. The potential difference between electrode R and part W is opposed to a reference potential drawn from a transformer T4 supplied by the bars L1, L2 through a transformer. T5 and a rectifier Rl.
The transformer T5 can be called the reference potential transformer and the rectifier R1 the reference potential rectifier.
The AC input circuit of the rectifier R1 can be closed by a normally open contact 83 of the voltage application relay 9 or by a normally open contact 85 of another relay 87 which can be referred to as a control relay. potential. The direct current output of the relay RI supplies a variable resistor 89 and a fixed resistor 91 connected to the terminals of the rectifier Rl.
The variable resistor 89 can be set, between limits, to any value necessary to obtain the desired result.
With the device at rest and the potential control relay 87 de-energized, the positive terminal of the reference potential rectifier is connected by a normally closed contact 93 of the potential control relay 87 and a gate resistor 95 to the control electrode 97
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
of the recoil triode of the lamp V. The control electrode 99 of the other triode is connected by a gate resistor 101 and an anti-beat resistor 103 to the positive terminal of the potential difference resistor between part and electrode 73.
The negative terminal of this resistor 73 is connected to the cursor of the variable resistor 89 in the reference potential circuit. A pair of resistors 105 and 107 are connected between the control electrodes 97 and 99 of the double triode Vo. junction of these resistors is connected to the cathode 65 of the double triode via a bias potential which keeps the double triode V non-conductive at the start of switching on the device.
The cursor of the anti-beat resistor 103 is supplied by the main advancement thyratron VT through the secondary S2 of the transformer T2, a rectifier R3 and a capacitor 109.
The resistor 103 can be connected in the control circuit of the advancing triode 59-65 so as to apply to this control circuit a positive or negative voltage.
As shown., The voltage has the polarity of the voltage of the potential difference resistor between electrode and part 730
The electrode and part 21 servo relay is controlled by another thyratron VI as well. When this thyratron is not conductive, the electrode and part 21 servo relay is disconnected. Resistor 63 in the advancement triode 59-65 of the lamp V is then short-circuited ,, and the circuit of the motor MW which moves the part W is closed When this thyratron is conducting, the relay 21 is energized and the two circuits are open
Thyratron VI is controlled by the potential difference resistor between electrode and part 73.
The negative end of the resistor 73 is connected to the cathode 111 of the thyratron VI and its positive end is connected to the control electrode 113, via an adjustable polarization o The thyratron of electrode and part can therefore be supplied according to the potential difference between part W and electro- de Ro
To operate the welder, the mains voltage is applied to the bars L1 and L2, the manual-automatic switch 115 is placed in the automatic position, and the feed-back switch 117 is set to advance When the bars L1 and L2 are initially set under tension, the filaments of the various thyratrons and other discharge devices are fed o At the same time,
a time delay relay 119 is supplied This remains open for a determined period of the order of five minutes to allow the filaments to reach their emission temperature necessary for the proper functioning of thyratrons and other discharge devices. Once the time delay relay 119 is activated, the device can be started.
At this time the voltage application relay 9 and the potential control relay 87 are both disconnected, and therefore the reference potential application circuit is opened and the potential of reference is not applied to the control circuits of the double triode Vo The triodes of the lamp V are however non-conductive, because the primary circuit of the transformer T3 which supplies them is open.
Switching on can be done by closing a BR start switch which can be a simple foot switch.
When the start-up switch closes, a circuit is closed by the energizing coil of the potential control relay 87, going from an auxiliary bar bl supplied by the transformer T4, by a switch. LV stop, the relay 87 excitation coil, the currently closed contact 121 of the timing relay 119, and the start button BR, to the other auxiliary bar b2.
The potential control relay 87 is energized o It closes., At its currently closed contact 85, the reference potential supply circuit., And the reference potential resistors 89 and 91 let the current flow through another currently closed contact 123, the junction point of variable resistor 89 and fixed resistor 91 is connected to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the control electrode 97 of the recoil triode of the lamp V.
The connection between the positive terminal of the rectifier Rl and the control electrode 97 is interrupted, at the currently open contact 93 of the potential control relay o The supply circuit comprising the primary P3 of the transformer T3 closes on contact currently closed 124 of the potential control relay 87. This circuit goes from the bar bl, through the primary P3, the closed contact 124, the closed contact 121 and the start switch BR.
A circuit also closes through the excitation coil of a slow-opening relay 125 This circuit runs from the auxiliary bus bl through the relay coil 125, the closed contact 121 of the timing relay 119 and the reset switch. switching on BR, to the other auxiliary bar b2. A normally open contact 127 of the slow opening relay 125 closes immediately, closing a circuit through the energizing coil of the voltage application relay 9. The latter trips. By one of its currently closed contacts 83, it closes another circuit comprising the source of reference potential R1. By its other currently closed contact 7, it closes the circuit of the primary P of the welding transformer T. A locking circuit is established by another currently closed contact 129 of the slow opening relay.
This circuit turns the ON button BR off and so does the currently closed contact 124 of the potential control relay 87.
When it is activated, the potential control relay 87 has also closed a circuit containing the relay of the feed motor 15. This circuit goes from the auxiliary bar bl through the excitation coil of the relay, the closed contact 124 of the feed motor. relay 87, the closed contact 121 of the timing relay 119 and the start button BR, to the other auxiliary bar b2. Relay 15 is latched by the currently closed contact 129 of the slow opening relay 125. The electrode feed motor circuit is closed by the contact pair 11 and 13 of the feed motor relay being energized. The normally open contact 17 of the feed motor relay 15 which is in circuit with the normally closed contact 19 of the electrode and workpiece lock relay 21 and with the workpiece displacement motor MW, is also closed.
However, the electrode R is, at this moment, at a good distance from the part W and the positive potential at the terminals of the potential difference resistor between electrode and part 73 is therefore significant. The electrode and workpiece servo thyratron VI is conductive and the electrode and workpiece servo relay 21 is energized, so that the electrode advancing motor MW is turned off.
As the R electrode is moved away from the workpiece and the positive potential of the potential difference resistor between electrode and workpiece 73 is high, the bias of the control electrode of the triode 59-65 of the lamp V is counterbalanced, and this triode becomes conductive. This conductivity is however not great because of the presence of the resistor 63 in the anode circuit of this triode. The capacitor 51 in the control circuit of the AVT advancing auxiliary thyratron discharges into the triode 59-65 and the auxiliary thyratron conducts current late in the positive half-periods and makes the main advancing thyratron VT conductive at these times . The electrode advancement motor rotates slowly and gently brings the electrode R closer to the part W.
The electrode R possibly comes into contact with the part W and reduces the potential across the potential difference resistor between electrode and part 73, to a low value. The reference potential - is now greater than the potential difference between workpiece and electrode and the recoil triode 67-65 of the lamp V is made conductive, the advancement triode 59-65 becoming non-conductive. The capacitor 53 in the AVA recoil auxiliary thyratron control circuit rapidly discharges during the half periods when the anode-cathode voltage is positive, and the AVA auxiliary recoil thyratron becomes conductive early in the positive half periods of the. network.
The main VA recoil thyratron is correspondingly made conductive and the MR electrode advancement motor
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
rotates rapidly to move the R electrode away from the part W. The advancement triode 59-65 of the lamp V being non-conductive at this moment,, the capacitor 51 of the associated auxiliary thyratron AVT keeps its charge and maintains - the latter non-conductoro The main advancement thyratron is also non-conductive.
Since the potential difference between electrode and workpiece is small, thyratron VI and electrode and workpiece servo relay 21 are cut off. Resistor 63 in triode 59-65 of lamp V is short = circuited and workpiece movement motor MW circuit is closed Workpiece W can now advance as soldering. When the electrode R moves away from the piece W, an arc is established between them and the deposit of metal started.
The movement and welding of part W continues. If, at any time, the R electrode is burnt and disappears too quickly so that the potential difference between the R electrode and the part W becomes large, the potential across the potential difference resistor between electrode and part 73 increases. The reference potential is balanced so that the advancement triode 59-65 of the lamp V is made conductive and the recoil triode 67-65 non-conductive. As at this moment the relay, electrode servo and part 21 is cut off, the resistor 63 in the advancing triode 59-65 is switched off and the latter is very conductive.
The auxiliary advance thyratron AVT becomes conductive early in the positive half-periods of the array, and so does the main advance thyratron VT. The motor rotates rapidly so as to rapidly approach the R electrode of the piece Wo This effect is accelerated by the potential applied to the anti-beat resistor 103. When the R electrode approaches too much of the W component, 'the main VA recoil thyratron is turned on accordingly, and the electrode is again withdrawn from the part When the R electrode is at the correct distance from the part W,
the potential at the terminals of the reference potential resistor 89 and the potential at the terminals of the potential difference resistor 73 between electrode and workpiece balance each other so that the double triode V is non-conductive and neither the triode VT nor the triode VA don't let the current go
The operation can continue automatically until the part W is welded. At this time the start switch BR is open, but the control potential relay 87 is locked by its locking contact. currently closed 124 in a circuit which contains the normally closed LV stop switch. The slow opening relay 125 is also locked by the same contact 124 of the potential control relay 87.
The voltage application relay 9 therefore remains on. The forward motor relay 15 is locked by the currently closed contact 129 of the slow opening relay, The primary of the transformer which supplies the auxiliary thyratrons is also locked by the currently closed contact 129 of the slow opening relay
To stop the machine, we open the LV stop switch.
The interlock circuit passing through the potential control contact 124 opens, and the relay 87 is switched off The slow opening relay 125 remains energized for a short time, during which the motor relay of step 15, the voltage application relay 9 and the primary P3 of the transformer which supplies the auxiliary thyratrons AVT and AVA and the double triode remain energized. As the potential control relay 87 is cut off at this time, the positive terminal of the reference potential circuit is connected to the control electrode 97 of the recoil triode 67-65 and the junction point of the resistors. variable and fixed 89 and 91 is disconnected The recoil triode control electrode 97 is at a higher positive potential than in operation and the recoil triode is highly conductive.
The VA recoil thyratron is therefore very conductive and the electrode R is quickly moved away from the part W and the arc is interrupted between electrode and parts. After that, the slow opening relay 125 trips, the motor relay d 'advancement'15 is' de-excited and the' primary P3 of the

transformer which supplies the auxiliary thyratrons AVT and AVA and the double triode V is disconnected, so that the device is ready for a new operation.
By actuating the advance adjustment switch IT, or the reverse adjustment switch IA, the circuit is closed across the terminals of the corre- sponding triad 59-65 or 67-65 of the lamp V and the capacitor. 51 or 53 of the associated auxiliary thyratron discharges at a notable rate. The corresponding auxiliary thyratron AVT or AVA is made conductive and the electrode is brought closer or removed from the part, depending on the switch which has closed. The two forward and reverse adjustment switches each have a normally closed contact 43 and 41 in the circuit of the AVA reverse auxiliary thyristor and AVT forward, respectively, and these latter circuits are kept open to prevent the simultaneous operation of the devices. corresponding main thyratrons VA and VT.
The forward and reverse adjustment switches IT and IA respectively each have a second normally open contact 130 and 132, the closing of which causes the actuation of certain selected elements of the apparatus. The operation of these elements allows the operator to set the device for welding without supplying the welding transformer and therefore without danger for him. As the contacts 130 and 132 are in parallel, it suffices to study the operation of one of them.
If it is assumed that in the idle state of the machine, the advance adjustment switch IT is actuated, a circuit is closed going from the bar bl, via the excitation coil of the advance motor relay 15 and the advance adjustment contact 130, at bar b2. The feed motor relay 15 engages. The MW electrode advancement motor circuit closes at contact 17, and the electrode can be advanced or retracted by closing feed switch 117 or reverse switch 134.
The circuit of transformer T1 also closes at contacts 11 and 13. In addition, a circuit closes, from bar bl, through primary P3 of transformer T3 and contact 130 to bar b2. The current is thus sent to the main and auxiliary forward and reverse thyratrons VT and VA and AVT and AVA as well as to the servo thyratron VI. The MR electrode feed motor is now energized to drive the electrode to the workpiece.
By activating the recoil adjustment switch IA, the electro-de R can be approached to the workpiece in a similar manner, with the machine at rest, moreover.
The apparatus described above constitutes an automatic arc welder of relatively simple construction, inexpensive and safe to operate. A welder of this type requires minimal maintenance and can be kept running without difficulty.
The automatic welder also works on direct current.
Schematically, the direct current source 131 can be a generator which can be connected between electrode R and part W by a selector 0 which, as represented, disconnects the transformer T. The selector 0 is represented for convenience and is not part of the system. Only the connection shown by closing switch 0 is needed to convert the AC welding system to a DC system. The control device must not be modified in any way. Note that with DC welding, the DC generator circuit is closed by the normally open contact 7 of the voltage application relay.
In its main application, the invention intimately relates to welding with a consumable electrode or rod. In its broader aspects, on the contrary, the invention can be applied to welding with a non-consumable rod, cutting with such an electrode, heating by arc, an arc being produced between the adjustable electrode and the electrode. heating room
