<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
On a affirmé (Org.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
EXEMPLE I.

à l'are environ.

IMPROVEMENTS IN INSECTICIDE COMPOSITIONS.
The present invention relates to improved insecticidal compositions and in particular to compositions intended to destroy nematodes.
Nematodes, which include the potato eel (Heterodera rostochiensis) and the root knot-forming eel (Meloidogyne Spp) have so far been shown to be extremely resistant to the action of chemicals and none of the compounds, of very varied constitution, the use of which has been proposed for their destruction is entirely satisfactory. Indeed, many products effective against insects, fungi or other lower forms of plant or animal life are not particularly toxic to eels.
The life cycle of eels varies depending on the species, and while some species such as Meloidogyne Spp do not go through a resistant cystic stage, others produce large numbers of cysts, containing the eggs, which represent a potential source of new infection and which are generally very resistant to any form of chemical action.
Thus, certain compounds which appear to delay or reduce the initial attack of eels on the root system of parasitized plants appear to be powerless to prevent the formation of large numbers of new cysts, with the result that the parasite is not not eliminated but remains in the soil while waiting for an opportunity favorable to its development. The product for the fumigation of the soil known under the name of mixture DD, comprising a mixture of dichloropropene and dichloropropane. Is used in the United States for the destruction of the eels but has the disadvantage of allowing the formation of a cystic population. in cystorene species such as the potato eelworm.
In addition, a massive application must be used to ensure the protection of the crop, which causes the coloring of the latter and makes
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the expensive product for large-scale application. It has been found that phenyl-isothiocyanate is more active than the D.D. mixture, but this compound is also too expensive for agricultural purposes and is sometimes phytotoxic at the concentrations necessary to destroy this insect.
It is known that azides exert a protective action, and prevent the growth of certain plant organisms such as bacteria, fungi and molds and it has been proposed to use them in the undiluted state or in solution in a small quantity. alcohol. Until now, however, they have not been shown to be particularly useful against parasites of the animal kingdom and it is with surprise that some of these compounds comprising the azide or N3 group have been found to exert a very satisfactory action on nematodes act on the larvae and on the cyst and are extremely suitable for preventing the formation of new cysts, their activity in this respect being several times greater than that of the DD mixture mentioned above.
According to the invention, compositions useful against nematodes comprise as an active element one or more compounds from the group of azides comprising the alkali metal azides and the persistent azides of organic acids of the general formula R.CO .N3, in which R is a phenyl, phenoxy, methyl or naphthyl residue which may contain nitro, alkyl, halogen, alkoxy, aryloxy or cyano substituent groups, intimately associated with an excipient or a diluent.
According to a preferred form of the invention, the active element is chosen from a class comprising the alkali metal azides, a benzazide which may contain nitro, chloro or methoxy substituents in the meta or para position on the azide group, and beta-naphtazide.
The invention also comprises the use of these compositions for the control of nematodes.
Some acid azides decompose spontaneously within minutes or hours. But the invention relates to compounds which, in their pure state, remain practically unchanged at room temperature, and which have been called persistent to mark the difference with the term stable, used in the sense of non- explosive.
Among these compounds, sodium azide is the most effective nematocide, 200 times more active than the D.D. mixture in some of the tests reported later. It is perfectly stable, but certain metal azides, of copper, lead, cobalt and nickel for example, are explosive and it is necessary to avoid that the compositions containing sodium azide or of another stable metal do not come in. prolonged contact, in use or in storage, with a metal forming an unstable azide.
Sodium azide is also very toxic and forms toxic decomposition products; handling must therefore be carried out with particular care.
The organic acid azides according to the invention, although less active than sodium azide, are however a marked nematocidal effect which can reach in certain cases 40 to 50 times that of the DD mixture. It has been stated (Org. Reactions III, 373) that organic azides containing 25% or more nitrogen in azide form can be dangerously explosive, but high molecular weight azides are generally harmless solids. Although some of the claimed azides are susceptible to detonation, they can be handled without risk of explosion by sufficiently diluting them. However, their preparation requires certain precautions.
Acid azides are generally solids practically insoluble or very sparingly soluble in water and the usual organic solvents, and the most suitable way of applying them to soil is in the form of powders mixed with a solid diluent. However, they can also be applied in the form of emulsions or dispersions in a liquid,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
water, for example, by mixing them intimately with an emulsifying or dispersing agent before adding the liquid thereto. On the other hand, sodium azide is soluble in water and can be applied; either in solution or in the form of a powder mixed with a suitable solid diluent.
The excipient can be chosen from the materials usually used for this purpose, that is to say, for example, fuller's earth; gypsum, talc, kaolin, anhydrite, sand, diatomaceous earth, and soil fertilizers or correctors with which azides do not react chemically. The choice of diluent has been found to be of considerable importance, because some of these normally inert materials appear to determine or accelerate the decomposition of acid azides. 'Benzazide and p-chloro-benzazide are particularly sensitive to this action, and although they can be stored alone without appreciable change for several months, their mixture with certain diluents quickly loses its effect. storage activity.
A composition comprising p-chlorobenzazide and kaolin, for example; was found to be practically inactive after two months storage, while the activity of undiluted azide did not change much after 5 months storage. On the other hand, kaolin has no effect on the activity of m-nitrobenzazide, and their mixture can be stored for a long time without modification.
As nematode cysts in infested soil can remain numb for quite a long time and therefore constitute a potential danger during the entire period of plant growth, it is essential that protection extends to at least this period and it is clear that a composition which loses its activity in a few weeks is of little interest in practice; unless it can kill the eggs and larvae inside the cysts within a few days of application. In the case of non-cyst-forming eel varieties, this issue of persistence may be of less importance.
Sand, ordinary inorganic fertilizers, and diatomaceous earth give reasonably persistent compositions with all azides of the claimed group and satisfactory preparations can be made from these or mixtures thereof. A mixture of one of these azides with sand and diatomaceous earth such as Colite or Kensil F, for example 8-9 parts of sand for 2-1 parts of diatomaceous earth is generally suitable, not only from the point of view of persistence, but also from the point of view of texture and bulk density.
When using toxic substances, such as azides, it is preferred that the compositions be relatively dense and not pulverulent and for this reason a very finely divided diluent such as talc or kaolin is not as satisfactory as. coarser and heavier material. In addition, the compositions obtained from such a material distribute themselves more easily and with less loss in the furrows or rows intended for plant growth, and are also suitable for spreading application if that - this is considered preferable. The seed compositions are therefore particularly suitable.
In Table 1 below, the approximate persistence of compositions containing benzazide and m-nitro-benzazide with different diluents is referred to as weak, medium or strong, "medium persistence", relating to a duration of d. activity of one to two months, .., while "high persistence" and "low persistence" express respectively longer and shorter durations. P-Nitrobenzazide, 3,5-dinitro-benzazide and beta-naphtazide behave analogously to m-nitrobenzazide, while p-chlorobenzazide is similar to benzazide except that its persistence is strong with fertilizer for potatoes and medium with fuller's earth. Sodium azide appears to be insensitive to diluents.
Potato fertilizer is a standard preparation containing approximately N = 12%, P2O5 water soluble: 11.9%, P2O5 insoluble: 0.1% and K2O: 15%.

The compositions can contain from 1 to 5% of active material, but this proportion is not critical, and the proportions of the elements of the compositions are preferably chosen with the aim of ensuring an efficient distribution of the active material on the surface. to be processed, and to produce a physical state practical for application and economical to use.
The amount of diluent used must be sufficient to give a non-explosive composition, and therefore able to meet the test conditions of the British Home Office, or an equivalent body in another country, and this amount can obviously vary to some extent. Compositions containing 5% benzazide or m-nitro-benzazide, for example, cannot explode, and it is probable that higher proportions can be used without danger.
The compositions can be applied shortly before or at the time of seeding or planting. In the case of potatoes, for example, they can be applied in advance to the rows to receive the plants, and mixed again with the soil when planting.
Their activity may vary to some extent depending on the azide used, but 50 to 100 pounds of active ingredient per acre (approx. 1/2 to 1 kg / are) is sufficient to protect the crop almost completely. In special cases much smaller amounts may suffice. Certain compositions, used in high concentration, show a slight toxicity evidenced by a reduction in the weight of the root system compared to that of plants subjected to lower doses. This action is often less marked in more acidic soils. To attenuate it as much as possible, the active material must be perfectly dispersed in the soil, and the compositions must be carefully mixed and of uniform constitution.
In view of the instability and toxicity of many azides, the preparation of the compositions of the invention should not be carried out using dry materials.
One way to mix azide and diluent with minimum danger is to suspend the active ingredient and part of the diluent in water and mix. carefully and filter. The active material can also be suspended in water and part of the diluent.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
continuously added to the filter during filtration. It may also be desirable to wash the filter media with water before adding the remaining diluent. Moisture from the wetted mass can then be absorbed by adding the remainder of the diluent, and any remaining lumps are brushed off through a coarse mesh screen.
In this case, the composition contains a certain amount of water. You can also add a small amount of water to obtain a mixture of suitable texture. On the other hand, if the azide is soluble in water, such as sodium azide for example, the process can be modified by mixing an aqueous solution of the azide with a sufficient amount of diluent to obtain. keep a moist mass, then adding the rest of the thinner and sifting as above.
These compositions can also be combined with an insecticide or with a product for fumigating the soil with which they are compatible, for example with benzene gamma hexachloride or with another insecticide or fungicide.
The examples which follow illustrate the invention without limiting it.
All parts are expressed by weight.
EXAMPLE I.
In a series of experiments highlighting the activity of the compounds of the invention compared to that of the D.D. mixture taken as standard, the vinegar eel, Turbatrix aceti, was chosen as control organism. 0.1 g was dissolved. azide in 10 cm3 of acetone and the solution is dispersed in 100 cm3 of water containing 0.05% of the dispersing agent sold under the brand Lubrol W at twice the desired concentration, and we spread with an equal amount of culture solution containing a known population of eels.
Solutions are prepared containing 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, 0.025, 0.0125, 0.00625, 0.0031, 0.0016 and 0.0008 parts per thousand of active ingredient, and the amount of solution of culture used in each experiment contained approximately 1000 eels. The latter are exposed to azide for 24 hours. at 24 ° C and then samples containing a known number are taken, and the proportion of subjects killed is calculated. The results are shown in the table below, which, by way of comparison, also gives the proportion of deaths by the dispersions of D.D. mixture at the four high concentrations.

EXAMPLE 4.
In this example, benzazide, p-chlorobenzazide, 3,5-di-nitrobenzazide and sodium azide are tested against the potato eel, Heterodera rostochiensis Woll under conditions more approaching those of conditions obtained in practice
Soil infested with eel cysts is thoroughly mixed to ensure even distribution of the cysts, and then treated with the azide composition in amounts equivalent to 25, 50, 100 and 200 pounds per acre. These compositions are applied in the form of 5% and 1% powders with kaolin, prepared simply by thoroughly mixing the two elements. Standard sized pots are each filled with 500 g of treated soil, and seedlings of tomatoes are planted 3 days after treatment.
Parallel experiments are carried out without chemical treatment, and with infected soil treated with equivalent concentrations of phenylisothiocyanate. Phenyl-isothiocyanate is used instead of the D.D. mixture because it has been found that this compound is more active and safer than D.D. in this type of test. Four to five weeks after planting, the seedlings are removed from the soil and examined for cysts, the roots being cleared of the soil by washing and weighing and the coppings collected and counted.
The table below shows the new cvstes formed per gram of roots in the treatments with four concentrations of each of the two chemicals, and those of the controls in untreated soil.

The above figures show that azide exerts an action even at low concentrations while the reduction in new cyst formation with increasing concentration is significant. The figures also show that azides are much more effective than phenyl isothiocyanate.
Similar experiments were also carried out with beta-naphtazid and m-nitrobenzazide, using 1% powders in kaolin, and reducing the number of cysts per gram of root for applications of 100 and 200 lbs. acre is also striking.
EXAMPLE 5.
The p-nitrobenzazide and the p-methoxybenzazide are also subjected to the tests described in Example 4; a 1% powder in kaoin is used and the plants are examined after seven weeks of growth. In this example, the soil contains, in addition to the potato eelwort, Melidogyne Spp, and an approximate record of the nodules of each plant is made.
The results shown in the table below show that the two nematodes are effectively combated.

EXAMPLE 6.
A nematocidal composition is prepared as follows:
An aqueous suspension of benzene containing the equivalent of 5 parts of benzazide is filtered through a vacuum filter and at the same time and gradually 30 parts of sand are added to the filter bed so as to obtain an intimate mixture of benzazide and sand. The completely drained mixture is removed from the filter and mixed again. 15 parts of dry diatomaceous earth are added to the wet, coarse powder. The product obtained is carefully mixed and passed through a large mesh sieve (B.S.S. 8. Approx.) Using a wooden block. The coarse-grained powder is then placed in a blender and mixed with 42.5 parts sand and 7.5 parts water.
The product is then suitable for the treatment of soils infected by the potato eel and can be applied at a rate of 1.25 kg. to are approximately. The treatment is advantageously carried out one to two weeks before planting the potatoes.
EXAMPLE 7.
A miscible oil type product is prepared by dissolving 30 parts of benzazide in 40 parts of diacetone alcohol and then adding a mixture, 10 parts each, of the dispersing agents sold under the trade names Lissapol NX. and Lubrol MO with 10 new parts of diacetone alcohol to obtain a homogeneous mixture. The product thus obtained is stirred in water at the rate of 0.3, 0.6 and 1.2 parts per 100 parts of water, and the dispersions thus prepared are applied in an amount equivalent to 50, 100 and 200 pounds of active ingredient per acre at known amounts of potato eel infected soil. Three days after the treatment, young tomato plants were planted in the samples of treated soil and also in untreated iron.
The plants are removed five weeks after planting, and the cvstes sought on the roots as described in Example IV. The results are presented in the following table
