IMPROVEMENTS TO COUPLING SYSTEMS FOR WAGONETS.
The present invention relates to improvements made to coupling systems for wagons and in particular to a new embodiment of such a coupling applicable to large capacity mine wagons.
Conventional wagon couplings are characterized by the fact that they generally comprise a hook and a coupling ring, the ring being able to pivot freely in an eyelet of the hook, so that two neighboring wagons are hitched one to the other. other when the ring of one is passed through the hook of the other these two elements cooperating together to ensure the connection.
In general, the coupling ring is in one piece, in the form of a torus, obtained by bending a straight part initially passed through the eyelet of the hook, the two neighboring ends of which after bending are intimately connected by welding.
As a result of the increase in the unit volume of mine wagons, it is compulsory to size the various elements of the couplings so that they can withstand the tensile forces corresponding to the size of the trainsets to be moved. In this dimensioning, however, it is necessary to take account of an important element. The total height of the coupling cannot exceed a certain value, in relation to the construction of the wagons proper, otherwise the coupling will drag on the ground when the wagon is traveling unhitched or at the end of a train. It is easy to understand that, for a given material, limiting this height also limits the maximum tensile strength of the entire coupling.
In the couplings currently used, this height limit has already been reached and it would not be possible to obtain a coupling having a re-

tives.
It is obvious that certain elements of the coupling system such as for example the hook or the fixing device on the wagon, can be easily reinforced by using a high quality steel with high strength. Unfortunately, the same is not true for the drawbar eye. This is generally formed from mild steel, which facilitates butt welding with a view to achieving the toroidal shape. "The use for the constitution of this ring of a high strength steel, called hard steel, would lead to welds extremely difficult to achieve, very expensive and whose mechanical resistance can vary within very large limits,
to the detriment of the safety of the coupling.
In order to use for the constitutiotn of the ring of steels

two distinct pieces, one in the form of an axis introduced into the eyelet of the hook, the other in the form of a stirrup, the axis penetrating into the ends of the stirrup. The assembly is carried out between the two parts by hooping obtained by hot pressing.
The present invention relates to an improvement making it possible to produce the coupling system with a ring in a single piece, while forming this so-called hard steel ring, with high mechanical strength.
According to the invention, the coupling system for wagons, comprising a hook and a ring intended to cooperate together, is characterized in that the ring is formed in a single piece, curved on itself
and made of high quality steel with high mechanical resistance by proceeding as follows:

The appended drawings represent a non-limiting example of coupling for a wagon produced according to the principles of the invention. The figu-

The fixing device (not shown) of the hitch on the wagon supports a journal 1. which supports a stirrup 2. This stirrup is, before fixing, engaged in the eyelet 3 of the hook 4. The ring 5 cooperating with the hook 4 is also engaged in eyelet 3 of said hook.
It is easy to see that the ring 5 is formed from a single metal part folded back on itself, shaped so as to present a conical pivot 6, engaged in the eyelet 3 of the hook 4, and the other end of which 7 forms eyelet presented itself, after brokerage, opposite the pivot 6 and was assembled with the latter. By the forging and stamping operation, the ring 5 has been reinforced at 8, in line with the conical pivot and also at 9, a location symmetrical with the conical pivot with respect to the plane of symmetry of the

The advantages of the coupling system according to the invention are as follows
