<EMI ID=7.1>
L'ensemble a

SUBSTITUTES FOR LEATHER AND SIMILAR PRODUCTS AND THEIR MANUFACTURING PROCESS.
We know the flocculation properties of latex which are increasingly applied industrially for the preparation of various objects by molding, dipping or "flow cashing".
Various means are known, moreover, for stabilizing the latex, either to allow its prolonged storage, or to allow it to be worked and added to it, certain ingredients, such as

The addition of fillers to the latex, without reducing it prematurely
stability has already been studied in certain practical applications in order to lower the cost price of manufactured products. However, until now, the incorporation of fillers had to be accompanied by certain precautions and only limited quantities could be introduced. "The introduction of dispersing agents, for example, was essential to combat both the effect destabilizer of these charges and to facilitate their assimilation to the mass.

The present invention relates to the manufacture of leather substitutes or similar products, based on latex, mineral or organic materials and, where appropriate, mineral, animal or synthetic fibers.
or vegetable, singly or as a mixture, for example of leather shavings, wool, cotton, hemp, ramie, sizal, synthetic fibers, asbestos, etc.oo waste
Given the particular nature of the product which the object of the present invention is to manufacture, a process has been sought which is simple and in which the addition of mineral materials represents a significant improvement in the finished product and facilitates the manufacturing operations.
Among the mineral materials that have been considered, clays of different origins have been very particularly studied, and among these bentonites have been retained because they have notable advantages over the otherso Indeed, bentonites of American and French origin exhibit, as is known, the property of absorbing 10 to 20 times their weight of water, forming a colloidal suspension and, in addition, it has been observed that they have a dispersing action on the medium to which they are incorporated while playing the role of binder, after drying. The dispersing action leads to an activation of the properties and the action of certain ingredients of the medium making it possible, for example, to reduce the proportions of the latter.
However, these clays, in particular bentonite, could not be incorporated in high proportions which, however, as the present invention reveals, would have been of considerable interest.
From the point of view of the latex, the incorporation of a suspension of bentonite into the latter, even in a large proportion, in the presence or absence of leather scratches, has shown in the case of application of the present process a stabilizing effect and highly appreciable dispersing power. In addition, in correlation with these two observed phenomena, it has been possible to greatly reduce the amount of some of the ingredients to be added to the latex, for flocculation and for vulcanization.
It was the remarkable properties of bentonites and their compatibility with latex that made it possible to set up the process, object
of the present invention, for the manufacture of synthetic or synthetic leather or other substitutes.
The process for manufacturing the products which are the subject of the invention basically consists in intimately mixing with the latex and vulcanizing ingredients a high proportion (greater than, in any case, 0.8% of the weight of the dry latex) of bentonite beforehand. swollen with water and then in flocculating the mixture, in the presence of a high proportion of water, high enough to allow easy separation of the flocculant, to bring the mixture thus flocculated to the state of plates, bands or other objects, by eliminating the major part of the aqueous excipient present and in cold or hot vulcanizing the products obtained and bringing them to the desired degree of dryness
The invention is also characterized by certain particular conditions of the state of the constituents, of their relative proportions, as well as by the procedures resulting from the embodiments.
of the invention described below.
Bentonite in the swelling state is obtained by contact of dry bentonite with 7 to 20 times the weight of dry latex of water not containing enough inorganic salts to prevent swelling of the bentonite, the weight of water incorporated with the bentonite being, preferably, large enough so that the bentonite can no longer absorb it.
Latex is a stabilized latex of natural rubber, for example

The vulcanizing ingredients preferably comprise accelerators and anti-oxygen products and are introduced, where appropriate, with the dyes and other materials, optionally in the presence of bentonite swollen with water. The mixture can be incorporated, before vulcanization, with emulsifiers, protective colloids, plasticizers.
The flocculation of the mixture is carried out by lowering the pH of the mixture, for example by means of an aqueous solution, preferably very dilute, of an electrolyte.
The transformation into finished products can be obtained by pouring the flocculated mixture onto filter plates or strips or into filter molds, with the intervention of a vacuum.
It is advantageous, particularly in the case where the flocculated mixture contains fibrous materials, to subject the mixture of flocculate and aqueous excipient to high frequency vibrations, preferably directed, and more particularly directed in a direction perpendicular to the flow. area
of the filter plate or strip. Under these conditions the removal of the excipient is faster at this stage of the process. This vibration can also be replaced by tapping the free surface of the mixture by means of

rer with latex bentonite proportions that can represent up to 60%
or even more, of the dry weight of the latex used.
In the case of the present invention, it has been found that bentonite does not play the simple role of filler; on the contrary, it has been found to be an adjuvant capable of increasing the tensile strength at elongation, the elastic tensile strength, the wear resistance and, at the same time, to remarkably high values. time, the volume of the finished product for the same weight of initial dry matter. The air permeability and the water impermeability remain very satisfactory and, moreover, no slowing down or harmful effect of the inaction of the accelerators on the result of the vulcanization is observed.
It has, moreover, been observed that the products prepared in accordance with the invention are capable of drying more rapidly than similar products free from bentonite and that the degree of humidity which they contain after drying cold or hot, for a period of time. indefinite time, corresponds to the normal degree of humidity usually encountered in such products; vulcanization is done preferably at

tion or even alteration of the products.
The oven drying temperature of the plates is on average
of the order of 50 [deg.] C and requires only 3 to 4 hours.
It should be noted that the swelling by hydration of the bentonite constitutes a particularly important phase of the present process. In fact, the properties and the quality of the finished product are strongly dependent on the degree of swelling reached by the bentonite during the manufacturing process.
<EMI ID = 7.1>
te is pushed, the more dispersing, coherent, plasticizing properties
and wear resistance of the manufactured products are high. The vigorous stirring of the water in which the bentonite has been poured makes it possible to rapidly obtain a suspension whose viscosity can reach that of a consistent fat.
The incorporation of the latex into the emulsified bentonite in water is carried out after having prepared the above-indicated suspension and by gradually incorporating therein a dilute aqueous suspension of latex, regularly and without excessive agitation liable to form lumps. The fluidity of the mixture thus obtained is regulated by the addition of a sufficient quantity of water to obtain a cream brought to a state of homogeneity *, and of constitution such that, by flow in a trough or a long trough, said cream has a perfectly smooth surface.
To improve the mechanical resistance of products conforming to
the present invention and to prepare products which have the appearance
and the properties of the leather, a certain amount of leather and / or fiber scratches are added as necessary. In this case, these materials must be defibrated as perfectly as possible This operation is carried out simultaneously with the incorporation of these materials in latex and / or bentonite, for example in a pile similar to that used for the refining of pasta With papiero We thus obtain, after vulcanization, a product which has all the appearances of ordinary leather and which is superior, in certain respects, to the latter.
The introduction of the ingredients of vulcanization, coloring, accelerators, sulfonated oil, algin and, where appropriate, a resin and / or paraffin emulsion, into the manufacturing mixture, preferably takes place. in the form of a homogeneous suspension which has been prepared beforehand by stirring in the presence of a certain proportion of swollen bentonite
at the water.
Here are, by way of example, embodiments of the process according to the present invention.
In a refined pile one introduced, for each plate of substitute of the leather which one wishes to manufacture, 900 gm of wet scratches of leather, 115 gm of frayed cotton and 20 gr. sulfonated oil. The set has
been impregnated with 1520 gr. of water and this material was defibrated by means of the pile.
When the defibration has reached an intermediate degree was introduced, by sprinkling the above products, 830 gro of powdered bentonite while continuing the defibration operation. When the bentonite has

The whole was run into the mixture a 3% aqueous solution of aluminum sulfate in an amount sufficient to lower the pH to 4.5, thereby determining the flocculation of the constituents of the mass. The fluidity of the mixture was then adjusted by adding a large quantity of water, which made it possible to pour it onto a table comprising a filtering surface under which a vacuum was made. After removing the excess aqueous excipient, a plate was obtained on the filter table which, after cold compression, pe-

It should be noted that a product prepared under the same conditions, but free of bentonite, required a drying time of 17 h to achieve the same degree of humidity. at 60 [deg.] C and with strong ventilation.
The leather shaving and cotton can be replaced, for manufacturing needs and in correspondence with the desired quality for the finished product, by other fibers or materials such as, for example, fine powdered cork. This addition has been made, for example, to bentonite which has previously been swelled in water and to which commercial ammonia has been added. The mixture was then stirred until a homogeneous paste was formed and the cork in fine powder was introduced and mixed thoroughly. Was then added to this paste, stirring well, a suspension of dilute latex containing algin, ammonia, a resin emulsion, zinc oxide, sulfur and an accelerator and we have finally added to this mixture of aluminum sulphate until flocculation of the paste obtained previously.
After a strong dilution with water, the flocculate was brought to the vacuum tables and the procedure was as indicated in the example above.
