Les buts de l'invention consistent à présenter.des compositions de matièresqui peuvent être aisément manipulées à la truelle et .que 1?on peut obtenir en une gamme étendue de couleurs et de teintes, que l'on peut faire adhérer tenacement à toute surface à laquelle elles sont appliquées à l'aided d'une truelle, qui peuvent être fabriquées de manière qu'elles soient suffi- samment souples,¯pour être appliquées sur des tôles métalliques minces .et pour être employées en tant que joint de dilatation entre des blocs de béton ou d'autres matières, qui];
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La cellulose méthyl éthylique a été choisie en tant que stabili- sateur parce qu9elle ne forme pas de composés insolubles avec la chaux ou les sels de chaux susceptibles de se trouver dans l'eau ordinaire, qu'elle est so- luble dans l'eau, qu'elle n'est pas coûteuse et qu'elle est efficace à toutes les concentrations susceptibles d'être utilisées;
en émulsion a- queuse, qu'elle est un bon auxiliaire de manipulation.à la truelle, qu9elle augmente la résistance à l'humidité de la composition finie et qu'avec le temps, elle "sèche" dans la composition appliquée, communiquant ainsi à la com- position une résistance améliorée à l'attaque par l'huile minérale et à la mi- gration du plastifiant dans la résine thermoplastique principale; mais elle peut être remplacée par un polymère linéaire ou un polymère globulare fusi- ble, c'est-à-dire, un polymère linéaire à chaîne comparativement courte et à ramification importante, tel, par exemple, que le bitume la coumarone, qui est.une résine à polymérisation d'addition synthétique;

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
Les exemples ci-dessus sont donnés seulement à titre d'indications de modifications et de variations qui peuvent être nécessaires pour permettre de produire des compositions qui satisfontouse plientà.certaines exigences en cours d'usage, mais il est ;

PERFECTIONED COMPOSITION OF MATERIAL.
The present invention relates to a composition of a material which can be handled with a trowel, in a hydrated state, for the covering of roads, floors, walls and roofs of all kinds, for the covering of bridges. of 'ship, bulkheads and other structural parts' of boats and ships, for use as side plate fairings, both above and below the waterline, to 1-exterior and interior of ship hulls and other structures covered with sheet metal, for the interior lining and exterior covering of tanks and other storage rooms,
for use as a mortar to form expansion joints between concrete blocks or other materials used for runways and roads of all kinds and for use as a waterproofing composition for all domestic purposes and industrial and for example, can seal the gap between the surfaces of a pipe and the bulkhead through which the pipe passes.
The objects of the invention are to provide compositions of matter which can be easily handled with a trowel and which are obtainable in a wide range of colors and tints, which can be tenaciously adhered to any surface. to which they are applied with a trowel, which can be made to be flexible enough, ¯ to be applied to thin metal sheets. and to be used as an expansion joint between concrete blocks or other materials, which];
can be prepared on site by simply mixing an aluminous cement and other dehydrating ingredients with stable, factory-made emulsified compounds which neither decompose nor invert during mixing, compositions which are not practically affected by impurities from any added water o
The composition of matter is of the kind produced by dehydration of an aqueous emulsion of two thermmoplastic resins (which are mutually incompatible in such an aqueous emulsion) with a cement.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
aluminous and may include a material for controlling shrinkage.
In such an emulsion, the main thermoplastic resin is a linear ethylenic polymer which has the property of forming thin films and therefore that of giving strength and cohesion to the final composition.
The other thermoplastic resin added to the main resin is a fusible globular or linear polymer which is a trowel handling aid.
The aluminous cement can be molten cement, Portland cement, Titian cement, Roman cement, Sorel cement or mixtures of these cements.
The shrinkage adjusting agent may be plaster of paris,. Keene cement, Paros cement or Scott cement.
In such known emulsions, it is important that the two thermoplastic resins are incompatible in the form of an aqueous emulsion, because otherwise the added thermoplastic resin does not behave as a handling aid with the trowel with respect to the composition in hydration route, but combines with the primary thermoplastic resin to produce a sticky syrupy mass which does not lend itself to trowel handling.
It has been found that such compositions exhibit shortcomings; in particular, the hydrated composition lacks flexibility, this defect not being able to be corrected by adding a plasticizer to the main thermoplastic resin due to the instability introduced by the migration of the plasticizer towards the added thermoplastic resin, as a result of which the characteristics of the composition are modified in that the added thermoplastic resin becomes tacky and the surface of the composition exudes or becomes covered with stains,
The invention consists of a composition of matter of the kind produced by the dehydration of an aqueous emulsion of two thermoplastic resins (which are mutually incompatible in such an aqueous emulsion) with aluminous cement,
in which the polyvinyl acetate contained in the dispersed phase of the aqueous emulsion is plasticized by an amount of between 26% and 29% by weight of a plasticizer having a boiling point greater than 2500C, and left to mature for about seven days, a dispersion of about 5% of methyl ethyl cellulose in water containing methyl ethyl cellulose in an amount between 0.5% and 1.5% by weight of the acetate polyvinyl is mixed with the plasticized polyvinyl acetate emulsion to stabilize the emulsion, a solution of cobalt linoleate in the alkyd resin modified with the drying oil,
the amount of said alkyd resin being between 5% and 7%. the weight of the polyvinyl acetate and the amount of cobalt linoleate being between
0.4% this 1.5% of the weight of the alkyd resin is mixed with the stabilized plasticized polyvinyl acetate emulsion, water is added to the emulsified mixture so that the water content is included. between 1 1/4 and 5 times the weight of the polyvinyl acetate and the aqueous mixture. is dehydrated by an aluminous cement, reinforced with floated asbestos and spread with sand.
In some cases, this composition of matter can be diluted by the addition of ground cork saturated with an oily liquid substance repellent to water, containing the cork in an amount between 9% and 50%. of the weight of the polyvinyl acetate.
To meet user requirements, the composition may include the addition of an independent shrinkage control agent, one or more reinforcing agents, one or more spreading agents, one or more pigments and one or more diluents. to vary, change or modify the color, strength, texture and / or appearance of the final product.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Polyvinyl acetate was chosen as the main resin because it is inexpensive and lends itself to plasticization, when in an emulsion state, more readily than other ethyl polymers. , but it can be replaced by any polymer derived from a monomer or monomers containing the ethylenic bond, such as polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyethylene and all vinyl copolymers.
The viscosity-temperature gradient of the plasticizer is important - and in this connection tricresyl phosphate is sufficient for general purposes, but dimethyl glycolic phthalate should be employed when the composition is exposed to widely different temperatures ranging from , for example, from tropical heat to arctic cold.
Methyl ethyl cellulose was chosen as a stabilizer because it does not form insoluble compounds with lime or lime salts which may be found in ordinary water, because it is soluble in water. , that it is inexpensive and that it is effective at all concentrations likely to be used;
but it can be replaced by strong glue, polyvinyl alcohol, glyceryl borate resin and certain varieties of cellulose acetate (with an acetyl number between 13% and 20% acetic acid) or other substances having the specified characteristic, although inexperience shows that methyl ethyl cellulose has better stabilizing properties than those of the other materials mentioned.
The drying oil modified alkyd resin was chosen because it is incompatible with polyvinyl acetate:
as an aqueous emulsion, that it is a good handling aid. with a trowel, that it increases the moisture resistance of the finished composition and that over time it "dries" in the applied composition, thus imparting to the composition improved resistance to attack by mineral oil and to the migration of the plasticizer into the main thermoplastic resin; but it can be replaced by a linear polymer or a fusible globular polymer, that is to say, a comparatively short chain and high branching linear polymer, such as, for example, as bitumen coumarone, which is .a synthetic addition polymerization resin;
polypropylene sebacate, which is a synthetic condensation polymerization resin, i.e., a linear saturated alkyd resin; and, partially, the polymerized drying oil
Cobalt linoleate has been given simply as an example of a "drier", but it can be replaced by any ordinary "drier" of paint or a mixture of ordinary driers of paint which consists, for example, of lead salts, cobalt and / or manganese from linolenic, naphthenic or abietic acids.
In order that the effect of the ingredients, as well as that of changes in the proportions or ratio of ingredients can be clearly stated, the following formulas are given by way of example

This mixture is specially modified for use as a mortar, binder, cement or the like and produces a flexible material which adheres intimately and with great tenacity to the surfaces of concrete blocks, bricks and the like. same as the seat which carries such blocks, bricks and the like, which has a good low temperature characteristic and does not become brittle at a temperature of 0 C and below, which exhibits a relatively temperature-viscosity gradient. slightly marked, so that it does not soften unduly at tropical temperatures, which has a very low water absorption so that it does not soak up water, which is robust and exhibits great resistance to crushing and erosion of jet aircraft exhausts during testing and flight;
the composition is suitable for road surfaces of all kinds and for aerôdromeso runways

This mixture introduces the addition of Portland cement to the molten cement so that the ratio of aluminous cement to calcium sulfate plaster becomes equal to unity. This modification makes it possible to reduce the amount of the reinforcing agent, that is to say. say of sand as well as the amount of diluent, that is to say of impregnated cork. The composition produced by this mixture is a binder material somewhat similar to the compositions produced by the mixtures of Examples 7 and 8,
but it is particularly suited to cases where rapid setting is required because advantage is taken of the known fact that judicious mixtures of molten cement and Portland cement set faster than either of the two cements used alone. It is known that mixtures of Portland cement and molten cement have different characteristics from those of the materials, characteristics which depend on the ratio of one to the other, so that by choosing the ratio the setting time can be. shortening and shrinkage can be regulated with this result that it is possible to avoid re-use of plaster of Paris and thus to suppress the tendency of the composition applied to absorb water, tendency inherent in the use of plaster of sulphate of calcium.

This mixture does not include plaster of Paris, but uses a mixture of Portland cement and molten cement; moreover, the mixture is similar to that of Example 9; the composition produced by this mixture is suitable as a sealant composition for sealing the joints of a runway constructed under conditions of extreme humidity, i.e. where the runway is liable to be sometimes submerged by water.
In the above examples, the use of anthracene oil can be considered as being a variant of that of materials known on the market under the trademark IRANOLIN or under the trademark DUTREX, likewise. that of all extracts of aromatic hydrocarbons to. high. boiling point (Edeleanu process) which include hydrocarbons with molecular weights between 200 and 800 and which have a high carbon to hydrogen ratio.
In the examples cited, polyvinyl acetate is the main thermoplastic resin, the alkyd resin modified with drying oil is the added thermoplastic resin, methyl ethyl cellulose is the stabilizer, tricresyl phosphate and dimethyl glycolic phthalate are the plasticizers, cobalt linoleate is the catalyst, the asbestos fibers act as a reinforcing agent and as an agent which also serves to spread the composition by a non-combustible material, sand is a reinforcing agent, molten cement and Portland cement , being both aluminous cements, constitute the dehydrating agent, plaster of paris (when used) is a shrinkage control agent, impregnated cork (when used) is a thinner can be expensive and light,
which improves the elasticity and the anti-slip properties of the composition.
Asbestos is commonly used as the species known commercially as "float asbestos", sand is 10 mesh per inch (British Standard BS 410-1943) and cork is in the form of finely divided material, size between 6 and 36 stitches (British Standard BS 410-1943).
In each of the examples cited above, the composition is prepared by going through the following steps
Step 1. The plasticizer is added to a polyvinyl acetate emulsion and the mixture is allowed to stand for seven days.
Step 2. A dispersion of about 5% of methyl ethyl cellulose in water is prepared.
Step The product from step 2 is mixed with the product from step
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
1 after it has matured for the seven day period.
Step 4. The cobalt linoleate drier is dissolved in the alkyd resin modified with siccative oil.
Step 5. The product from step 4 is mixed with that from step 3.
Step 6 0! When the finished composition comprises cork). The pentachlorinated phenol is dissolved in "Iranolin" or anthracene oil or another oily substance which repels water, as the case may be, and this solution is mixed with the cork.
Step 7. Mix the molten cement, Portland cement (if used plaster of Paris (if used), liasbeste, sand and pigment (if used). ) with the product from step 6 when the composition is to be applied o
Step 8.
The product from step 5 is mixed with that from step 70
Step 9. Water is added which may be necessary to dilute the composition so as to allow it to be handled with a trowel or to be used as a mortar or as a cement to bind blocks together, to seal openings or in as fairing product for sheet metal assembly joints o
Step 9 should be completed fifteen minutes before the composition is used and the product from step 9 should be used within one hour of termination on a cold day and within one hour. half an hour on a hot day.
In some cases, the finished composition is produced by carrying out steps 8 and 9 at the application site, or the finished composition can be produced by modifying step 7 to remove cement and plaster. , with the result that the mixture has the form of a slurry which is mixed with the cement and the plaster on the application site.
When a colored composition is required, part of the sand can be replaced with a pigment, allowing for the difference in grain size as well, if the sand passes through a 10 mesh per inch sieve (British Standard BS 410-1943) and the pigment passes through a 200 mesh per inch sieve (British Standard BS 410-1943), then for any part by weight of pignmt added, 1.15 parts .... by weight of sand should be deleted
The above examples are given only as an indication of modifications and variations which may be necessary to enable compositions to be produced which meet certain requirements in use, but it is;
understood that when polyvinyl acetate is chosen as the main thermoplastic resin and the alkyd resin modified by the drying oil is chosen as the added thermoplastic resin, that is, as an auxiliary handling with a trowel, the composition of matter according to the present invention is characterized in that an aqueous emulsion of polyvinyl acetate is mixed with a plasticizer in an amount approximately equal to 27.8% of the weight of the polyvinyl acetate in the dispersed phase of the aqueous emulsion and this preparation is left to mature for about seven days, a dispersion of about 5% of methyl ethyl cellulose in water containing methyl ethyl cellulose in an amount of about 1,
32% of the weight of the polyvinyl acetate is mixed with the plasticized polyvinyl acetate emulsion to stabilize the emulsion, a solution of paint "siccatives" in the alkyd resin modified by the siccative oil - the amount of said alkyd resin being approximately equal to 6.1% of the weight of the polyvinyl acetate and the "siccatives" being in an amount equal to approximately 0.5% of the weight of the alkyd resin - is mixed with the stabilized emulsion of plasticized polyvinyl acetate and water is added to the emulsified mixture so that when the aqueous mixture is dehydrated by aluminous cement, reinforced with floated asbestos and spread with sand,
