-TRANSMISSION.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

-TRANSMISSION.
The invention relates to a transmission (possibly with speed change) in which balls are clamped between at least three bearing rings or annular seats arranged coaxially, at least one of which can be moved, in the direction of the axle, compared to other bearing rings. The invention constitutes an improvement of such transmissions and consists in that between the rolling rings is clamped a set of two series of balls, offset with respect to one another, but interlocking.
In the accompanying drawings, the invention is shown by way of example and schematically. In these drawings - figure 1 is the basic form of a transmission with two series of balls, in longitudinal section; FIG. 2 is a diagram of FIG. 1 to explain the mode of operation of the transmission; FIG. 3 is a transmission in combination with a (peripheral) transmission with planetary wheels; FIG. 4 is a transmission in combination with two transmissions with planetary wheels; FIG. 5 is a transmission in combination with a coupling, and FIG. 6 is a variant of the embodiment according to FIG. 5, comprising the use of an axial pressure adjuster.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The transmission according to FIG. 1 comprises a set of two series of balls 1 and 2, offset with respect to one another but interlocking, which balls rotate between the bearing rings 3,4,5 and 6.
By a spring 11, the balls are clamped between the rolling surfaces or seats 7, 8, 9 and 10 of the rolling rings as well as one against the other, two balls touching at the fulcrum 12. The transmission takes place, for example, to the shaft 14 by means of the bearing ring 6 which is connected to it, and the movement is collected on the shaft 13 and the bearing ring 5 which can move on it in the direction axial, but which cannot rotate.
To support this rolling ring 6 on the shaft 13, a ball bearing 15 has been provided. The outer rings 3 and 4 are to be considered as stationary. 'Balls 1 and 2 transmit the torque from the drive shaft to the driven shaft.
The magnitude of the transmission ratio depends on the magnitude of the angle of inclination of the rolling surfaces. 7, 8, 9 and 10 on the axis of rotation. When these rolling surfaces 3, 4 and 5,6 are inclined in pairs at the same angle, the number of revolutions of the drive shaft of the transmission is equal to the number of revolutions of the driven shaft. If the angles of the rolling surfaces are chosen to be different, therefore asymmetrically, there is a difference in the numbers of turns, that is to say that the transmission ratio becomes greater or less than unity. If the transmission is to operate gradually, one or more rolling surfaces must be formed into rolling grooves, the passage always taking place from the outer circle. to the inner circle.
The mode of operation of the transmission according to FIG. 1 can be explained by means of FIG. 2. There are represented the points where the movement is communicated, where it is collected, and of the rolling balls 1,2 on the bearing rings 3, 4, 5 and 6 and in fact at the top of figure 2, for a position of the bearing rings which corresponds to the transmission ratio 1 1. In the lower half of figure 2, the bearing ring 5 'has been moved in the direction of arrow P in such a way that the result is a transmission ratio greater than 1. The balls 2 are set in a rotational movement by the rolling ring 6 linked to the shaft drive 14 and roll on the bearing seat of the bearing ring 4 and on the balls 1 (contact points 12).
This results in a movement of the ball 2 around the 0'K'1 axis passing through its center and that the ball 1 rotates around an O'K "1 axis also passing through its center. Line O1A1 represents a generator of the rolling cone of the driving part; line O1B1 is the corresponding generator of the rolling cone of the driven part. Line 01 CI is a generator of the driving cone and line O1D1 a generator of the cone in- The lines O1K'1 and O1K "1 represent the instantaneous axes of rotation of the balls 1 and 2. The ratio of the angles A1O1C1 and B1O1D1 is determining for the size of the transmission ratio. When said angles are of equal magnitude, as is the case in the upper half of FIG. 2, there is a transmission ratio of 1 1.
In the lower part of FIG. 2, the bearing race 5 (designated by 5 ') is moved in the direction of arrow P'. As a result, the position of the balls 1 and 2 between the bearing rings and with respect to each other is changed, so that the tip of the cone which corresponds to the movement takes the position O2. The position of this point O2 is determined by the condition that the angle between the instantaneous axis of rotation. of ball 2 and the generator of the corresponding rolling cone is equal to the angle of the instantaneous axis of rotation of ball 1 with the generator
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the corresponding bearing cone, that is to say that the angle A2O2K'2 is equal to the angle B2O2K "2.
If we connect again the corresponding points of communication of the movement, of resumption of this one and of rolling of the balls 1 and 2 on the bearing rings 3 ', 4', 5 'and 6', to the point O2, it appears that the angle A2O2C2 is no longer equal to the angle B202D2. The transmission ratio then corresponds to the ratio of these two angles.
Nothing is changed in the basic mode of operation when the rotating bearing rings 5 and 6 surround the series of balls on the outside and the fixed bearing rings 3 and 4 are fitted on the inside. It is also possible to choose the: balls 1 of one series larger or smaller than the balls 2 of the other series.
When the transmission according to the invention is combined with a planetary wheel transmission, it also becomes possible to transmit greater powers and to achieve higher transmission ratios. Fig. 3 shows an example embodiment for this.
Again, there is provided between four rolling rings 16, 17, 18 and 19, a set of two series of balls 20 and 21 offset with respect to one another but interpenetrating. By a spring 22, these balls are clamped between the bearing seats 23, 24, 25 and 26 of the bearing rings as well as between them; point 27 is the point of application of two balls. The drive takes place, for example, by the shaft 28 which is fixedly connected to the bearing rings 16 and 17 and the movement is taken up on the shaft 29. This shaft 29 is however not directly connected, as in the embodiment according to FIG. 1, to the bearing race of the transmission but with the planetary wheel 30 of the planetary wheel transmission.
This compared to the transmission proper consisting of balls and rolling rings, which hereafter will always be called rolling transmission, is arranged so that the driving wheel 31 playing the role of inner ring gear is connected to remains at the outer bearing ring 16, while the sun gear 32 of the planetary transmission forms a whole with the inner rolling ring 18. Between the driving ring 31 and the sun gear 32 rotate the planet wheels 33 bearing by the planetary carrier 30.
The rolling ring 19 transfers the differential moment which occurs in the transmission to the transmission casing. For this purpose, for example, a band brake or another coupling element 34 can be used. The sleeve 35 acts as a support for the spring 22, and for the rolling rings 18 and 19. The rolling ring 18 is fitted. rotating on the sleeve 35 via the ball bearing 36.
In order to understand the mode of operation of the transmission according to FIG. 3, it will first be assumed that the balls 20 and 21 are in a symmetrical position. The rolling surface 25 must then necessarily perform the same movement as the rolling surface 26, that is to say that when the rolling surface 26 is kept fixed, the rolling surface 25 also remains stationary. In this case, the sun gear 32 also remains at rest, so that only the planetary gear transmission works in the usual manner until now.
By axial displacement of the bearing seats 25 and 26 in one or the other direction of the double arrow P, the symmetry of the rolling transmission is eliminated, so that the running surface 25, and with it the sun wheel 32 begin to rotate in the same direction as the drive wheel 31 or in the opposite direction, depending on the direction in which the movement was made. If for example the sun wheel 32 turns in the same
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
sense that the driving wheel 31, the planetary carrier 30 rotates faster than before, that is to say that the transmission ratio is reduced. If the sun wheel 32 rotates in the opposite direction, the planetary carrier 30 rotates more slowly, i.e. the transmission ratio increases.
In the represented union of the rolling transmission and the planetary wheel transmission, the rolling transmission has to transmit only part of the total power, because to a certain extent it only takes over control of the gear. sun wheel. By proper sizing of the planetary wheel drive this fraction can be made larger or smaller. This method of construction is particularly suitable for arrangements in which it is necessary to transmit relatively large powers.
Another advantage of this arrangement is that the rotational speed of the balls is considerably reduced compared to the rotational speed of the entire transmission, so that the centrifugal forces of the balls remain small even for large numbers of drives. transmission towers and for large powers. Finally, in transmissions with pre-fixed working points, for example in direct drive in vehicle transmissions, it is possible to provide for the distribution of the powers in such a way that the rolling transmission is only slightly stressed for this main operating point. , so that the tightening of the balls can therefore be kept low.
It is only in the axial displacement (in the direction of the arrow P), to reach other operating points, that the balls must be tightened in an additional way, to put them in a condition to transmit higher forces. . In this way, the service life of the gearshift transmission is significantly increased.
The disclosed combination of the rolling transmission with a planetary wheel transmission is not limited to the embodiment according to Fig. 3; it is also possible to connect the rolling ring with the bearing seats 23 and 24, with the sun wheel 32 of the peripheral transmission. The inventive idea can also be applied to other combinations of rotating transmissions, such as group transmissions, for example. Likewise, transmissions in which the ball cage is used to transmit torques can also be used.
It has already been explained that in the transmission it is possible, by relative axial displacement of the bearing surfaces, to get the balls to change their axes of rotation, respectively their angular speeds, that is to say that we can therefore obtain a gradual change in the number of turns. To achieve complete or partial automation of the transmission, the measures described more fully below can be taken.
By means of toothed wheels obliquely in the peripheral planetary gear transmission, an axial thrust is exerted on the sun wheel or on the outside, corresponding to the magnitude of the rotational torque on the planetary carrier. controlled by the rolling transmission, said thrust effecting the relative axial displacement of the rolling races of the rolling transmission and thus functionally relating the ratio of the number of turns of the transmission to the torque present on the planetary carrier . By suitable dimensioning of the angle of attack of the transmission wheels, on the one hand, and of the geometric shape of the rolling grooves, on the other hand, any desired functional relationship can be achieved between the torque and the transmission ratio.
By applying an additional axial thrust, which is introduced, for example, by a spring or a suitable elastic constructive element with suitable characteristic, the characteristic of the transmission can also be changed.

In the union of the rolling transmission with a single planetary transmission according to figure 3, the transmission ratio cannot reach 1: 1 because the transmission ratios in the rolling transmission should then tend to infinity. .
This transmission ratio 1 1 is however very desirable in the transmissions of motor vehicles, for example. According to another development of the invention this object can also be achieved and this by the fact that two planetary wheel transmissions are provided, one of which is connected to the drive shaft and the other to the driven shaft of the transmission. Fig. 4 shows an exemplary embodiment of this idea.
The transmission with the series of balls 37 and 38 and the bearing rings 39, 41 and 42 is fixedly connected to the drive shaft 47 by its outer ring 39 carrying the bearing seats 43 and 44 and by the wheel. solar drive 48. The inner bearing rings 41 and 42 with the bearing seats 45 and 46 are provided with internal teeth 49 and 50. The planet wheels 51 and 52 are mounted in a common planet carrier 53 and operate as a group either with the internal teeth 49 of the bearing ring 41 and the drive sun wheel 48, or with the internal teeth 50 of the bearing ring 42 and the driven sun wheel 53.
The tightening of the balls 37 and 38 is effected by an elastic conformation of the flanged parts 55 and 56 of the inner bearing rings 41 and 42, the axial clamping force being taken up by the angular or shoulder ball bearings 57 and 58. The stationary inner ring 42 with the rolling seat 46 transfers the differential torque to the casing by means of pins 59 or the like.
In a symmetrical conformation of the transmission and a symmetrical position of the balls, the drive shaft 47 and the shaft 34 carrying the drive sun wheel 53 also rotate quickly, since the rolling transmission is stationary and the transmission is effected only by the two planetary wheel transmission. If the rolling transmission is moved out of the symmetrical position, by axial displacement of the inner bearing rings 41 and 42 with the bearing seats 45 and 46, the previously stationary ring 41 (with the bearing seat 45) rotates, either in the direction of rotation of the drive shaft 47, or in the opposite direction.
In the first case, the driven shaft 54 turns faster, in the second case, it turns slower than the drive shaft 47.
In the same way as in the embodiment according to FIG. 3, it is possible, by using an oblique toothing for the planetary transmission wheels, to exert an axial thrust which is proportional to the torque taken up. It is thus possible to make a transmission with automatic operation. Correspondingly, the characteristic of the transmission can be changed from the outside by applying additional pressure.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, a bearing race is employed for transferring the differential torque, and the corresponding resistance can be removed by means of a braking or coupling element. By the combination of this support, which can be released, with a transmission bearing ring, it is possible to rotate the transmission ratio 1: 1 as a single unit without internal movement. , from which result great advantages in particular for vehicle transmissions (direct drive).
In Figure 5, there is shown an exemplary embodiment for this. The transmission with ball series 61 and 62, the bearing rings 63, 64, 65 and 66 with the bearing seats 67, 68, 69 and 70, the clamping spring 71 and the planetary wheel transmission (with the wheel 72, the sun gear 73 and the planetary wheels 74) and the driving and driven shafts 77 and 78 correspond to the embodiment already described in FIG. 3. According to the other embodiment of the invention, the ring outer 63 and 64 with bearing seats 67 and 68

is provided with a conical mating surface 75, to which a corresponding conical surface of the inner ring 66 bearing the bearing seat 70 is applied.
This inner ring 66 also carries a freewheel 78, which transfers the differential torque to the casing 81 when the coupling 75 is released.
When the coupling 75 is engaged, the lower ring 66, which carries the bearing seat 70, rotates at the same speed as the outer drive ring 63 carrying the bearing seats 67 and 68. As a result, the second inner prison 65 bearing the bearing seat 69 and the sun wheel 73 must rotate at the same number of revolutions, so that the whole transmission turns as a block without internal relative movement, that is to say the transmission ratio is 1 1 and that as a result, for example, on a motor vehicle, we are in direct gear.
If the coupling 75 is released by an axial displacement of the inner coupling ring 66, the differential torque which is now produced by the operation of the transmission is transferred through the intermediary of the freewheel 76 to the gearbox. envelope, that is to say that there is a subordination of the driving part to the driven part.
Instead of the cone coupling it is also possible to apply another known form of coupling, for example a lamella coupling.
Inventive thinking can also be applied, however, when employing a transmission without additional planetary wheel transmission.
In the basic mode of operation of the transmission shown in Figure 5, nothing will change if the rotating bearing rings 63 and 64 internally attack the series of balls 61 and 62, and the bearing rings 65 and 66 externally. Such a transmission (with speed change) is shown for example in Figure 6 in longitudinal section and only half.
It includes the two series of balls 91 and 92, the bearing rings 93, 95 and 96 with the bearing surfaces 97, 98, 99 and 100 possibly shaped as rolling grooves, the flange rings 94 and 101 rubber bands replacing the clamping spring, the peripheral planetary wheel transmission of which the drive wheel 102 here acts as a sun wheel, the outer wheel 103 and the planetary wheels 104, the cone coupling 105, the free wheel 106 which transfers the differential torque to the transmission casing when the coupling 105 is released, the driven shaft 107 which is for example coupled to the motor, the driven shaft 108, the ball bearing 109 for the carrier. planetary 121, the support bearing of the ring. 96, divided into a ball bearing 113 and an angular ball bearing 112.
In addition, in order to take up the axial forces which occur when the transmission setting is changed, an axial thrust adjuster is provided, by which the forces which arise are in principle balanced internally. of transmission. This adjuster comprises, clamped between the bearing rings 114, 115, 116 and 117, under the action of an elastic element 118 comprising one or more springs, two series of balls 119 and 120.
