Par ailleurs, la présente invention apporte les autres avanta- ges suivants amélioration de la qualité et du rendement de l'utilisation des rotules par la suppression totale des bruits et vibrations, ainsi que de leur usure pratiquement nulle, augmentation du rendement industriel consécutif à une fabrica- tion simple et de série, donc moins onéreuse, suppression des jeux latéraux et axiaux et en particulier, sup- pression de toute butée supplémentaire nécessaire pour compenser la poussée axiale, celle-ci étant compensée automatiquement ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING BALL JOINT DEVICES AND APPLIANCES OBTAINED BY SA
IMPLEMENTATION.
The present invention relates to a method of manufacturing ball-and-socket devices and to the ball-and-socket devices obtained by its implementation.
Currently obtaining the spherical female parts of a ball-and-socket device is very expensive due to the delicate grinding required by machining the internal spherical surface. In addition, friction and seizure, which can occur during use, cause wear or decommissioning requiring the replacement of the entire device, that is to say expensive parts; hence very high cost and maintenance costs.
These drawbacks are all the more serious as they can also cause the rupture even of one of the parts and complicate the accident by the deterioration of the neighboring parts of the apparatus on which the ball joint device is mounted, with all the consequences that may result
To remedy these drawbacks, the present invention relates to a method of manufacturing ball-and-socket devices according to which the spherical male part of the device is wrapped without a solution of continuity by a bearing part enveloping a spherical sector of this male part.
According to an advantageous mode of application, this coating is produced by casting metal or other anti-friction material, such as a plastic material for example, by sintering or by electroplating. This latter mode of application can be used in combination with one or the other of the two preceding ones.
According to a particular mode of application of the invention, or wrapped, without any solution of continuity, the male spherical part of the device by

a composite bearing part, with a view, on the one hand, to obtaining large-dimension ball-and-socket devices, such as those used for example to replace the bearings of propeller shafts on boats and, on the other hand, of ball joint devices capable of withstanding significant axial forces.
In the first case, a coating of constant thickness enveloping a spherical sector of this central part, between this central part and a machined support with which] is cast, without any break in continuity, around the spherical male part. coating becomes a body after casting. In the case of large ball joints and working with a large spherical sector, this avoids having to use large masses of coating material in the vicinity of the spherical zones limiting this sector.
In the case where the ball joint is capable of receiving significant axial thrusts, the mold is lined with an elastic reinforcement conforming to a spherical shape substantially parallel to the internal spherical male part, and this part is coated without any solution of continuity. spherical male and this elastic reinforcement by a bearing part enveloping a spherical sector of this central part.
A further subject of the invention is the ball-and-socket device obtained by implementing the method specified above, this device comprising a spherical male core surrounded by a composite or non-composite female part, the internal bearing surface of which matches a spherical sector of the outer surface of this core, this female part having on the outside a surface of circular, square, hexagonal profile, etc., intended to be inserted without difficulty into the similar inner part of a support member such as a crank pin , connecting rod, bearing, motor flange, etc ...
The female part then plays the role of intermediary between the central core and the drive rod or any other housing which may contain the yoke or the female part, the latter once fixed to its support forming an integral part of that. here, by avoiding particularly difficult machining and rectifications of the internal face of this connecting rod or of any other housing.
In addition, the normal frictional wear, shocks or possible ruptures being supported by this female part, the ball joint device can then be replaced by a simple standard exchange without having to replace the components which carry it, which provides a significant amount of energy. - improvement of industrial efficiency.
Furthermore, the present invention provides the following other advantages: improvement in the quality and efficiency of the use of the ball joints by the total elimination of noise and vibrations, as well as their practically zero wear, increase in industrial efficiency following a simple, mass-produced manufacture, therefore less expensive, elimination of lateral and axial play and in particular elimination of any additional stop necessary to compensate for the axial thrust, the latter being compensated automatically;
friction always being tangent at all points of contact, which also eliminates any torsional force, possibility, without special tools, of manufacturing very small ball joints up to 2 mm in diameter and below, automatic alignment of a tree line between two points is

found in different planes.
The parts constituting the ball-and-socket device according to the invention can be made of simple or complex metal, of anti-friction or self-lubricating metals, of plastics such as that known under the name of nylon, etc., or in any other suitable material.
The following description, with reference to the accompanying drawings ;. given by way of nonlimiting examples, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented.
FIG. 1 shows the female part in section in the molding position.
FIG. 2 shows a possible position of the female part mounted on the central core.
FIG. 3 shows, in perspective with partial cutaway, the mounted assembly of a ball-joint device and a connecting rod.
FIG. 4 is a diametral section of a large ball joint device according to the invention.
FIG. 5 shows a possible position of the female part mounted on the central core in the case of the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 4.
FIG. 6 is a diametral section of the female part of a ball-and-socket device with high axial thrust, in the molding position.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the elastic reinforcement used in the embodiment shown in Figure 6.
According to Figure 1, the female part 1 surrounds the male part, the location of which is indicated at 2 inside a mold schematically traced at 3; the inner bearing surface 4 of this kind of jacket is spherical in shape and its outer contour 7 is cylindrical.
This jacket 1 having the general shape of a hollow cylindrical ring with a spherical inner surface 4 can oscillate and rotate around the core 2, as shown in FIG. 2.
The assembly as shown in Figure 3 is mounted in a connecting rod 5 with which it is mechanically integral by the tightening of a yoke 6.
According to FIG. 4, the female part 21 surrounds the male part 22 inside a mold schematically traced at 23. This female part 21 comprises an outer part 21a provided on the outside with a cylindrical surface and on the inside with a. a '' 'spherical bearing, this part 21a being made of a low-value metal. Between this part 21a and the male part 22 is cast a coating 21b, in anti-friction for example, the inner bearing surface 24 of which is spherical in shape, this coating after casting being integral with the part 21a. The sleeve thus produced has the general shape of a hollow cylindrical ring with a spherical inner surface 24 which can oscillate and rotate around the core 22 as shown in FIG. 5.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 6, the spherical male part 12 is housed in a mold 13 previously provided with a frame 15 formed as shown in Figure 7. This frame comprises a series of steel wires 16, shaped as a circular arc of greater radius than that of the spherical male part 12 and terminated at each of their ends by points 17 directed substantially perpendicularly to the chord of this arc. These steel wires 16, arranged at substantially equal intervals
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
on a virtual sphere surrounding the spherical male part 12, are joined together at the top of their arcs by a ring 18, made of steel wire for example, welded to each of these wires 16.
The frame thus produced being placed in the mold 13, the spherical male part 12 is housed in this ring by elastic bending of the tips 17 and the coating metal is cast so as to obtain a composite female liner 11 which has the general shape of a hollow ring, with a cylindrical outer contour for example, and a spherical inner surface. If a significant axial force is applied to the ball-and-socket device thus produced, this force is distributed throughout the liner 11 by virtue of the transmission effected by the points 17 interested in the steel wires 16, in the belt 18 and in the points 17 opposites.
It goes without saying that, without departing from the scope of the invention, any useful modifications could be made to the embodiments which have just been described as well as to the recommended raw materials.
