PROCEDE .DE, FABRICATION .D 3 HEX'àC HLORBENZEfiE .
EMI1.2
EMI1.5
notamment d9éviter ces réactions.
On sait dautre part (Fremy - Encyclopédie chimique 55, p. 344
EMI1.6
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

EMI1.2
The present invention relates to the manufacture of hexachlorbenzene by chlorinated pyrolysis of the isomers of hexachlorcyclohexane9 alone or in mixture. The invention is applicable to all isomers, but is of interest
EMI1.3
in particular for the upgrading of the oC 9, j 'and S isomers obtained after extraction of l8isomer M from the crude products of additive chlorination of benzone.
It is known that the additive chlorination of benzene is accompanied, at relatively high temperature, by secondary substitution reactions which
EMI1.4
lead to the formation of chlorosubstituted hexachlorcyclohexanes hepta-, octo- and enneachlorcyclohexanes.
The Belgian patents 469,299 and 470,621 of the applicant relate to processes for the chlorination of benzene at low temperature which allow
EMI1.5
in particular to avoid these reactions.
We know on the other hand (Fremy - Chemical Encyclopedia 55, p. 344
EMI1.6
and Beilstein (1922) ;, 2.9 p. 24) that the chlorinated derivatives of hexachlorcyc1p-hexane decompose into HCl and chlorbenzenes when heated above their melting point. This dissociation is also applied in a process of the applicant which is the subject of Belgian patent 469,692. The pro-
EMI1.7
The reduction of hexachlorbenzene by carrying out these chlorination and dehydrochlorination reactions simultaneously can be effected, as has been tried by the applicant, by chlorination of molten hexachlorcyclohexane. The theoretical yield of the reactions is almost 100%, but the process presents great difficulties of industrial realization.
When chlorinating a molten hexachlorcyclohexane, at 200 C
EMI1.8
for example, is carried out batchwise, the hydrogen chloride formed entraining, by vapor pressure, relatively large quantities of the reaction liquid mixture.
The composition of these vapors varies over time, from hexachlor-
EMI1.9
cyclohexane to hexachiorbenzenes including any intermediate compositions. These entrained products condense in the cold parts of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
installation causing numerous obstructions.
D9autre parces products must be recovered under penalty of seeing the yield of hexachlorbenzene considerably reduced.
Continuously, the process results in a reaction mixture of hexa,. -Chlorcyclohexane and hexachlorbenzene of constant composition, the constituents of which must be separated by crystallization, distillation or selective extraction. In addition, the drawbacks mentioned above are further accentuated.
The hexachlorbenzene manufacturing process forming the subject of the present invention avoids these drawbacks. It directly supplies 96-99% technical hexachlorbenzene without subsequent separation, with a yield generally greater than 95%.
According to the invention, hexachlorbenzene is prepared from hexa-chlorcyclohexane by introducing into a reaction chamber maintained at 350-600 C a mixture of hexachlorcyclohexane vapors and gaseous chlorine in proportions of more than three mol gr of chlorine per mol gr of hexachlorcyclohexane and by condensing the hexachlorbenzene formed by cooling the vapors leaving the reaction chamber.
The vaporization of the hexachlorcyclohexane can be carried out by introducing the solid or liquid compound into a vaporizer maintained at sufficient temperature, this vaporizer possibly being formed by a part of the oven preceding the reaction chamber proper.
The entrainment of hexachlorcyclohexane vapors in the furnace can also advantageously be effected by bubbling a gas through the molten starting material. This gas can be an inert gas, for example nitrogen, part of the hydrogen chloride generated by the reaction or else the chlorine itself. The use of chlorine or hydrogen chloride has the undoubted advantage of avoiding the subsequent separation of a compound foreign to the reaction.
The reaction chamber consists of an empty tube, with smooth walls, made of materials resistant to corrosion at the temperatures envisaged, for example a tube made of quartz or nickel. It has nevertheless been observed, as it emerges from the examples given below, that the operating temperature, the contact time and the excess of chlorine to be used to obtain a complete reaction can be appreciably reduced when the reaction chamber is. filled with a lining with a large contact surface: activated carbon, Raschig porcelain rings, refractories, quartz waste, etc.
As indicated above, the process has the advantage that the condensable product entrained by the hydrogen chloride, and possibly the inert gas, consists exclusively of hexachlorbenzene, the rate of conversion in one pass being substantially 100%. . This entrained hexachlorbenzene can be separated by precipitation in a cold-walled chamber, the majority of the product settling on the walls and can be removed by a suitable scraping device.
According to an extremely interesting variant in the case of the process of the present invention, the hexachlorbenzene is obtained in the finely divided state by cooling the vapors leaving the reaction chamber, by the introduction of a gas or of a gas. a vapor at a temperature much lower than the melting point of hexachlorbenzene. The gas or vapor, so far as they are compounds extraneous to the reaction, will preferably be of the same chemical nature as the agent used to entrain the hexachlorcyclohexane vapors. Nitrogen has been advantageously used for this purpose, but the recycling of part of the hydrogen chloride has the further advantage of avoiding the introduction of an additional element to be separated.
This precipitation of hexachlorbenzene is preferably carried out in an apparatus of such form that the ratio of the volume of the precipitation chamber to the surface of the walls is relatively high.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The apparatus for precipitation by injection of inert gas may be preceded by a condenser maintained at a temperature slightly above the solidification temperature of the hexachlorbenzene so as to condense therein a fraction of the latter in the liquid state, this molten product can then be solidified and presented in the desired form, for example by means of a cube or flake wheel.
EXAMPLE 1.
The reaction chamber consists of an empty 50 mm quartz tube. with an internal diameter and a useful length of 600 mm, heated externally so as to maintain the temperature at the center at 575-585 C. This chamber is surmounted by an evaporator consisting of a quartz tube filled with Raschig rings into which a mixture of [alpha], ss and residue from the manufacture of isomer @ is introduced, at a rate of 0.5 mol gr / h.
At the entrance to the reaction chamber, 2 mol gr of chlorine are introduced at the same time, which corresponds to a chlorination ratio
