ELECTRIC CONTROL FOR SPEED CHANGE.
This invention relates to a where type speed change. the different gear ratios are obtained by the selective application of the brakes by means of a main control or bus bar, by the intermediary of pivoting pushrods which are selectively moved by a preselective control, against a return force in a position where they are engaged by the bus bar, as, for example, \) in the case of the well-known "pre-selective" Wilson gearbox o It has been found that the link between the pre-selective control and the different pushers to move them selectively against the force of -return,
in the position where the bus bar can attack them (this link comprising an angularly movable camshaft in the case of the Wilson gearbox) is liable to become out of adjustment over time or to stick when it freezes)) which causes malfunction.
The main objects of the invention are to prevent this from happening and to provide a lightweight electric pre-selector having a pre-selector switch which can be placed away from the gear change, at any point desired. preferably such that no current flows until the passage of speed takes place
According to the invention, the pushers are brought against the restoring force, in the position where the bus bar can drive them, by solenoids which are selectively excited by means of a preselection switch when '' a main switch is actuated
In the accompanying drawings:

Fig. 5 shows a variant of the device shown in Fig. 1 "Fig" z. shows part of a brake drum 11 of a Vilson gearbox, the parts 12, 13 representing the ends of a brake band cooperating with this drum. Part 12 is virtually anchored by hooking to the hooked end 14 of an arm 15 articulated at 16.
Part 13 is attached to a connecting rod 17 which forms a fulcrum 18 for a lever
EMI2.4
19 attacking the back of the hooked end 14 and articulated to the pusher 20, the latter being urged towards the inactive position represented by a spring 21 bearing on the connecting rod 17.
It is clear that when the pusher 20 is driven by a common bus bar 23 (-solicited from bottom to top by a spring not shown

and resting in a groove 24) and that it is lifted into the occupied position (in Fig. 1) by the pusher 20a it moves the lever .9 in the direction of clockwise movement so as to lift the connecting rod 17 and therefore the part 13, while at the same time it makes the arm 15 oscillate slightly to support the part 12 substantially radially on the drum, so as to apply the brake.
Thus, when the invention is applied to a Wil-
EMI2.6
sound one uses instead of the pre-selector control? of .9arb e cam and mating connections of the gearbox, a preselector switch 25, shown as being rotary, provided with a fixed contact for each forward gear (marked 1.29 3 and 4 ) and for reverse gear (masked R), these contacts being respectively connected to the individual solenoids, which bear the same references. Each solenoid has a movable plunger
EMI2.7
which, when the solenoid is excited, acts directly or indirectly on the conjugate pusher 20.
The five solenoids can all be similar and the way the solenoid is shown in FIG. 1 as act

health on the brake band is typical of each dyeuz.
When a solenode is energized, the corresponding pusher is pushed towards side 28 of bus bar 23 and remains there until the latter has been lowered sufficiently to disengage pusher 20a with which said bar was previously. engaged, so that this pusher is

returned under the action of its return spring to an inactivated position, and that the pusher 20 then selected $ 1 is brought into the working position with respect to the bus bar. The latter, returning to its normal position :, lifts the newly selected pusher in position 20a to apply the required brake., In order to obtain the gear ratio which
EMI2.10
has been selected by the pre-selector switch.
The bus bar is usually actuated by means of the foot pedal such as that indicated at 30; and the arrangement is such that the partial lowering of the pedal closes a main switch 31 connecting the

accunulator battery 32 to! -movable part 33 of the pI switch ... selector. 9 1? complete lowering of the pedal with the effect of subsequently lowering the bus bar against the return force to which it is subjected, as well as 'it has been said.
Consequently, the movable member 33 of the pre-selector switch can at any time be moved to carry out the pre-selection of any.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
which speed ratio to be implemented subsequently, and it is only by lowering the pedal to the appropriate extent that the desired solenoid is energized, while when the pedal is released the circuit of this solenoid is cut to main switch 31, but the bus bar then drives the newly selected push-button so as to keep it in position. work 20a corresponding to the application of the brakes.
In the construction according to Fig. 1, the solenoid (which as has been said should be considered to be the typical model of the five solenodes) is shown as having two coils 35 36 arranged co-axially one inside the other. and as having a movable plunger 37 which, - in this case is hollow. Inside the latter can slide the head 38 of a push rod 39, the button 40 of which is placed so as to cooperate with the pusher 20.
A spring 41 acts between the head 38 and a bolt 42 attached to the other end of the plunger. The two coils 35, 36 are coupled in parallel and when energized the plunger is immediately brought into contact with the fixed core 43 This action has the effect of bringing the pusher 20 against the adjacent part of the end face 28 of the bus bar and compressing the spring 41. When the bus bar is fully lowered, the compressed spring 41 pushes the pusher 20 into the desired position to be engaged by the bus bar during the upward return stroke thereof.
Once the initial movement of the plunger has been made in this way, a lower current is sufficient to keep the spring 41 wedged. It is therefore preferable to switch off one of the solenoids, for example by means of a switch 45 (shown open in Fig. 5), controlled by a stop 4.6 on the bolt 42 of the plunger.
The variant of Figo 2, comprises a simple solenoid 48, arranged vertically and, when energized, its rigid plunger 49 rises, thus turning the elbow lever 50 in the direction of clockwise and by pushing to the left a push rod 51, the end 52 of which (corresponding to the end 40 of FIG.
1) cooperates with the pusher 20 (not shown in Figo 2). The chain lines 52 show the position of the rod 51 when the pusher 20 has been moved onto the bus bar fully lowered. When the solenoid is energized and before the bus bar has been fully lowered, the push rod 51 will occupy an intermediate position, as will readily be appreciated between that shown in solid lines and that shown in chain lines, the solenoid plunger, \) similarly, moving only partially.
Obviously, if desired ;, the stop rod 51 or the plunger 49 could, alternatively, be made in two parts with the interposition of a spring like the plunger and the push rod of Figo 1. Further, in one or the other of these variants, the solenoid could be of the type with two coils as in Fig.1.
In the variant of FIG. 2, the end 52 of the push rod 51 is supposed to engage the pusher 20 (not shown) near its lower end., 11 and since the push rod can then continue to move axially towards it. the left after having brought the pusher to the position of the brake-, to prevent the push rod in these conditions from rising on the bus bar and being able to strike it, use is made of a plate 54 supported at one end of part 55 of the casing and an edge 56 of which cooperates with a flat 57 formed at the periphery of the push rod in order to limit the axial displacement of the latter,
As will easily be understood,
it is desirable that the pre-selector switch member can occupy a neutral position, in which, in the particular form of the gearbox described above, P switch member connects, when the main switch is closed the first gear solenode and the reverse gear 8. the accumulator battery
