<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 2 est une vue en élévation extérieure de cette bougie;
Fig. 3 est une coupe de l'élément de soutien ou support provi- soire qu'on introduit dans la partie inférieure de la douille métallique avant le traitement d'échauffement et pression des parties à souder ensem- ble ;
Fig. 4 est la coupe verticale d'un anneau pouvant être forcé dans la partie inférieure de la douille métallique afin de régler la section de la chambre d'allumage suivant le moteur dans lequel la bougie est. appli- quée;
Fig. 5 est une coupe verticale de la bougie complète suivant le deuxième exemple d'exécution;
Fig. 6 en est une vue verticale extérieure.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

CANDLE.DALLUMAGE, FOR.MOEURS.A EXPLOSION .AND PROCESS .FOR ITS. MANUFACTURE.
The present invention relates to a light transparency spark plug for internal combustion engines and to the process for its manufacture.
This spark plug is characterized in that its transparent body, made of glass or other similar material, tightly clamped in a flexible metal base capable of being fixed in the engine and forming the ignition chamber below this transparent body, carries centrally (in-its interior a tube of hard material welded with it, which in turn is axially crossed by a metal rod intended to serve as an electrode., this rod being fixed to this tube by means suitable for hold it firmly in place.
The candle thus formed in its fundamental core is of very simple construction, while being very efficient in its operation and in particular in the transparency of the ignitions.
The process for preparing this candle consists of separately forming the different parts, mounting one inside the other with the metal socket as a base, those of the mentioned parts which are to be connected together by welding, by ensuring the respective position by a provisional support element introduced from below into the metal sleeve, this assembly is subjected to heating and to pressure in order to produce the desired weld and finally, after cooling of this assembly , the candle is completed with the other elements, these can be fixed in place by other means previously arranged.
According to another characteristic of the invention, in order to ensure the perfect connection of the parts to be joined together by welding, at least one of the two parts to be coupled is provided with annular peripheral grooves, into which the material penetrates, such as than glass or the like, during the heating and pressure treatment.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
This prevents the pressure effect from being diminished and at the same time a bond is obtained between the parts welded together to harden them into a "one-piece" assembly, so to speak.
Two embodiments of the object of the invention are illustrated in the appended drawing, in which they are fixed. 1 and 2 refer to the first example, freezes them. 3 and 4 to both examples and freezes them. 5 and 6 in the second example.
More particularly-.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of the complete candle according to the first embodiment.
Fig. 2 is an exterior elevational view of this candle;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the support element or provisional support which is introduced into the lower part of the metal sleeve before the heating and pressure treatment of the parts to be welded together;
Fig. 4 is the vertical section of a ring which can be forced into the lower part of the metal socket in order to adjust the section of the ignition chamber according to the engine in which the spark plug is. applied;
Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the complete candle according to the second exemplary embodiment;
Fig. 6 is an exterior vertical view.
As it follows from FIG. 1 referring to the first embodiment of the spark plug, in the metal socket 1, with the upper end shaped externally with a nut and with the lower part of smaller diameter provided with thread 2 for mounting this socket in the motor, is welded the transparent body 3 of glass or other similar material, inside which is welded the tube 4 of hard material, for example soapstone or other similar material. This assembly is obtained by introducing the transparent body 3 into the sleeve 1 and the tube 4 into the transparent body 3 and by subjecting the whole to a heating and pressure treatment.
Annular grooves 5 and 6 formed respectively in the internal periphery of the sleeve 1 and in the external periphery of the tube 4 allow during this heat treatment the concentration of the material of the body 3 in this sleeve and in this tube, as it has already been explained above. As has also already been said, before carrying out the heat treatment, the temporary support 7, which prevents relative displacement of the parts to be joined by welding during this treatment, is introduced into the lower part of the sleeve 1.
The tube 4 is provided at the upper end of its axial hole with an internal thread 8, which is surmounted by a part 9, of larger diameter, of this hole. The electrode 11 is screwed into this thread by its threaded part 10, this electrode penetrating, through an enlarged part 12, into the cavity 9 and resting by a collar 13 on the top of the tube 4.
On the transparent body 3 is arranged the reflector with fluted outer surface 14, which is held in place by the small cap 15 screwed on the threaded upper part of the electrode 11.
A ring 16, forced into the lower end of the metal sleeve 1, adjusts, depending on the engine, the section of the ignition chamber 17, from which the light produced by the explosion of the gas mixture is transmitted to the transparent body 3 .
In the example of execution according to figs. 5 and 6, we have the same assembly, obtained by welding under heating and pressure, of a metal sleeve 1, a transparent body of glass or similar material 3 'and a tube 4' of hard but transparent material, preferably of quartz, this assembly being made perfect thanks to grooves 5 'and 6' respectively
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the sleeve and the tube, into which the material of the body 3 'penetrates during the heat treatment, which is extended out of the sleeve 1 by a conical part capable of serving as a reflector. The electrode 11 'is entirely smooth and it passes through an axial hole of the body 3', to which it is joined by welding during the heat treatment.
To better ensure the connection of the electrode 11 'with the body 3', grooves 19 are provided in the latter, which during the heat treatment fill with the material which has become soft.
A small cap 15 ', screwed onto the threaded upper end of the Il-' electrode, completes the spark plug, the ignition chamber of which is also regulated here by means of a ring 16 forced into the lower end. socket 1.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the two embodiments shown in the drawing and described above, but it is likely to accommodate in its practical realization many variations, the principles. base always remaining the same.
