PERFECTIONNEMENTS APPORTES .AUX MONTURES.POUR MECANISMES ;TOURNANT OU
EMI1.1
OSCILLANT HORS D EQUILIBRE, .FONGTIONNÀNT,NQRKALEMENT A VITESSE-SENSIBLEMENT .CONSTANTE.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
REVENDICATIONS.

IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO FRAMES FOR MECHANISMS; TURNING OR
EMI1.1
OSCILLATING OUT OF BALANCE, .FUNCTIONAL, NQRKALLY AT SPEED-SENSITIVELY .CONSTANT.
The invention relates to mounts for out of equilibrium, rotating or oscillating mechanisms of the kind normally operating at a substantially constant speed, and in which the unbalance forces are in a vertical direction, or have a vertical direction. component in that direction.
According to the invention, a mount for a rotating or oscillating mechanism of the kind referred to above, comprises a support mounted on a floating system, the period of natural oscillation of which differs markedly from the predominant periodicity of the forces of up and down imbalance.
In the case of a mount for a windmill actuating a generator, the aforesaid support carried by the floating system may comprise a tower at the top of which the mill is mounted.
In a constructive arrangement in accordance with the invention, means are provided at the bottom of the tower which hamper lateral movements while allowing up and down movements, and a rigid structure is anchored to the ground and extends upwards. so as to engage said tower at a determined height, so as to also prevent lateral displacement while allowing upward and downward movements.
This arrangement is advantageous in that the overturning moment of the tower, resulting from the reaction of the windmill and the wind pressure on the tower, is largely absorbed by the aforesaid rigid structure, thus rendering a floating system unnecessary. very developed and in fact, in accordance with the present invention, the tower can be supported by a single float of the required capacity, disposed in a relatively small tank. The float can be annular in nature, in order to allow the the bottom of the tower can be engaged by the aforementioned means which hinder its lateral displacement while allowing
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
putting the movements up and down.
The aforesaid rigid structure may take the shape of a hollow truncated cone. The sectional extent of the tower can grow downward from the top of the rigid structure with its lower end supported by a relatively small wheelbase float system.
Preferably the float system is arranged so as to allow the rotation of the tower about a vertical axis, in which case said means for retaining the tower against lateral displacements will allow its rotational movement. and its movements up and down.
For this purpose, a path or cylindrical track attached to the tower can be engaged by rollers mounted on said rigid structure so as to rotate about vertical axes.
Such a path or cylindrical path can be arranged at the bottom of the. tower, while a centrally disposed roller or ball bearing may be mounted on top of the rigid structure, with the inner ring attached to that structure and the outer ring resiliently connected to the tower.
The aforementioned rollers at the bottom of the tower can be mounted so as to oscillate about axes transverse to the vertical axis. Similarly, the outer ring disposed at the top of the rigid structure can be elastically connected to the tower.
Preferably, means are provided to dampen the rotational oscillations of the tower, and for example the float can receive a larger volume than that required to support the tower, and can be partially filled with liquid so as to increase the inertia of the rotating mass.
The mass moment of inertia can be adjusted by adjusting the weight of the water ballast in the float, and the height of the float in the tank can then be compensated by changing the level of liquid in the tank, maintaining thus constant the total height of the tower.
The float can also be provided with internal or external baffles, so as to increase resistance to movement of liquid relative to the float.
Alternatively or additionally, the float can be set up so as to provide a certain number of internal compartments communicating with each other through adjustable openings.
Preferably the float system is disposed at the bottom of the tower, although in some cases it may be desirable to locate the float system between the tower and the top of the aforesaid rigid structure.
The generator driven by the windmill could be arranged in a boat fixed to the top of the tower, but it could also be mounted on top of the rigid structure, and operated by a suitable vertical drive shaft having universal joints. associated with it.
The tower can be much wider at its base than at its top end.
Applying the invention to an electric generator driven by the windmill, a streamline profiled nacelle can be mounted on top of the tower, which contains the generator and a horizontal drive shaft to which are attached. the wings of the mill.
The tower itself can be profiled in streamlines in straight section like the nacelle so as to be placed in the wind and the aforesaid aids are arranged on the leeward side of the nacelle and the tower.
Due to the fact that the nacelle is rigidly fixed to the top of the tower, it is possible to provide access to the nacelle from the top of the tower.
The tank for the float can be an integral part of the aforesaid rigid structure, and be of annular arrangement.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The rigid structure can be hollow and the output cables of the generator can descend through the tower and the hollow structure and then extend radially outwards beyond. of the tank.
The following is a description of a mounting arrangement for a windmill operated generator according to the invention, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical section in the structure
Fig. 2 is a cross section through the top of the tower, taken at 2-2 of FIG. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the reaction absorbing device at the top of the rigid structure;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the arrangement shown in FIG. 3;
Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of the bottom means of the rigid structure for retaining the bottom of the tower against lateral displacement; and.,
Fig. 5 is a schematic plan of a portion of an annular float mounted in the reservoir.
The apparatus comprises the rigid vertical structure 10 which is of hollow conical shape and which is provided at its base with an annular reservoir 11 A generator 12 driven by a windmill is rigidly mounted on a platform 13 fixed to the top of a tower 14. On the platform 13 is also mounted a gearbox 15 to the input shaft of which is fixed the hub 16 from which the wings or variable-pitch blades originate 17. The output shaft of the gearbox is connected by a marine type coupling 18 to an intermediate shaft 19 which, in turn, is connected, by another marine type coupling 20, to the generator shaft. The platform and the parts or members that it supports are mounted in a nacelle profiled in flow lines 21 which is fixed to the top of the tower.
The tower itself is formed by a frame erected in angles 22 and peripheral members 23 also in angles. These latter members are shaped so as to provide a contour in lines of flow for the tower, and the assembly is surrounded by a sheath of metal plates 24. As can be seen., The blades of the mill are arranged on the underside. the wind from the tower. The base of the tower is provided with an outwardly extending platform 25 to which are fixed uprights 26 and inclined members 27 secured at their upper ends to members 22, and these members 26 and 27 are also covered with the aforementioned sheath.
Below the platform 25 is attached a float system 28 which is polygonal in shape as shown in fig.5.
The base of the tower is thus supported by the float in the tank 11.
The tower and the float are able to rotate in the tank and also to execute up and down movements, but lateral movements are prevented by means placed at the base of the vertical rigid structure and at the top of the tank. this structure.
The retaining means arranged at the top of the structure are best represented in FIG. 3 and comprise a hollow vertical axis 29 comprising a flange 30 at its lower end, which is fixed to a plate 31, ,, in turn secured to a member 32 of section in 1 mold in the concrete of which the rigid structure. On the axle are mounted two combined bearing and thrust bearings 33, the outer rings of which are spaced apart by a hub portion 34. The hub portion is provided with three pairs of lugs or lugs 35 which are joined together. by organs 36.
Between the ears or legs of each pair is suitably mounted one end of a connecting rod 37, the other end of which is pivotally connected, via a rubber sleeve 38, to protruding legs or ears 39. towards the interior on a ring 40 fixed to the oven (Fig.4). The top of the axis 29 carries three friction rings 41 engaged by brushes 42, connected in turn, by conductors 43 and a control device, to the generator at the top of the tower. Connection to the user network
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
is ensured by cables 63 which descend through the vertical structure.
The bottom retaining means of the structure are best shown in fig. 6, and comprise three pairs of plates 44 which are arranged in openings in the vertical hollow structure 10 so that the plates of each pair are spaced apart from each other, one above the other, and they are fixed. to members in 1 45 cast in concrete. Each plate 44 is provided with a tab 46 at that of its edges which is located in the hollow vertical structure 10. Between the two plates 44 is mounted a short shaft 47, at each end of which is fixed a rectangular plate 48, the periphery of which is engaged by a stop screw 49 passing through a threaded hole in the tab 46.
In this way the position of the short shaft 47 can be adjusted radially with respect to the tower. Each short shaft is provided on opposite sides with a journal portion, 50, on which is mounted the inner ring 51 of a combined radial and thrust bearing, 52. The outer ring 53 is housed in a sleeve for - mée in a tubular member 54 provided with openings through which extend the journal parts 50. This tubular member is surrounded by the inner ring 55 of a ball bearing 56, the outer ring 57 is supported in a hub member 58, equipped with a number of spokes 59 extending between itself and a rim 60 to which a solid rubber tire 61 is attached.
In this way three rubber-banded rollers are arranged in the vicinity of the base of the rigid vertical structure.
Each roller is arranged to engage the internal surface of a cylindrical path or track 62 fixed to the bottom of the tower (fig.l). By virtue of the above arrangement, the rollers are capable of limited tilting movement so as to lend themselves to up and down movements of the tower.
In a similar manner, the pivoting movement of the connecting rods 57 and the elasticity of the sleeves 38 will allow upward and downward movements of the tower relative to the hub 34.
As can be seen, cables 63 connected to the friction rings descend into the interior of the hollow structure 10 and pass outwardly below the tank 11 so that they can be connected to the distribution cables. .
Although the generator is shown mounted on the platform at the top of 'la. tower, it could be mounted on a platform located at the top of the hollow structure 10 and be actuated from the output shaft of the gearbox using an appropriate transmission.
A passage door can be provided in the sheath surrounding the members 26, through which one can have access to ladders 64, 65 rising to platforms 66 and 13 respectively.
The annular floating system as shown in fig 5, can be constituted by a number of separate floats 69 joined together, and communicating with each other by adjustable openings indicated schematically at 68. Each float can be provided. a valve, indicated schematically at 67 for the purpose of allowing liquid to be introduced or withdrawn from the float, so as to allow the adjustment of its natural period of vibration by modifying the buoyancy of the floats. Preferably the period of natural vibration of the floating support system will be less than half the period of the prevailing unbalance forces which may be generated due to the rotation of the blades and other rotating parts.
Any vertical component of out-of-equilibrium forces that may be generated will only result in the tower oscillating up and down with low periodicity.
The float may be provided with internal or external baffles (not shown) so as to increase the resistance to movement of the liquid relative to the float and to damp rotational oscillations.
It will be understood that although the invention has been mainly described with reference to electric generators driven by a mill.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
wind, it can be used for other purposes, for example for a test tower for helicopter blades or propellers, in which case the blades are attached to a vertical rotating shaft at the top of the tower. Arranging the tower to rotate on floats results in a frictionless mount exhibiting a great inherent desirable inertia around the vertical axis.
Further by giving theirs a cross section shaped as flow lines, the rotor can be blown by the action of the wind on the structure itself, thus avoiding the need for a motive force to make the structure. turn the tower. Due to the inherent high inertia of the structure, the rotational speed will be low thereby preventing the development of excessive gyroscopic forces or other undesirable forces on the rotor.
Although the float system has been described as disposed at the bottom of the tower, in some cases it may be desirable to arrange it between the tower and the top of the aforesaid rigid structure.
