<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

BITUMEN TANK AND SIMILAR PRODUCTS.
The invention relates to tanks for storing or transporting products which must be heated before unloading them from the tank, such as for example bitumen and other heavy petroleum products.
It is common practice, for example in the case of tank wagons used to transport bitumen or similar products, to heat the load before discharging it by passing steam through pipes directed in both directions at the bottom of the tank. along the axis in the space containing the product. This method of heating the load is not economical from the point of view of fuel consumption, and is inconvenient since it is necessary to bring a boiler on a wagon next to the train. tank car to obtain the necessary steam.
The invention enables the bitumen or the like product to be heated rapidly while consuming a much smaller quantity of fuel and without a steam production plant being necessary, by means of the hot products of the combustion of a liquid fuel burner. . According to the invention, the tank comprises at least one pipe for heating by the combustion gases, the intake and exhaust ports of which are located outside the tank,
in which circulate the hot products of the combustion of a liquid fuel burner and which comprises a portion in a generally horizontal direction starting from the inlet orifice and situated at the bottom of the tank and a portion in a generally vertical direction ending in the upper part of the tank and extending between the horizontal portion and the pipe exhaust port, these portions of the pipe being located in the space of the tank containing the bitumen.
The liquid fuel burner for heating the tank may be of an easy-to-carry type, which is a significant advantage over the reservoirs which have to be heated with steam, since the steam production plant is necessarily bulky and must be transported In the case of a = tank wagon, this solution still has the drawback of requiring the boiler-wagon to be brought next to the re-wagon.

serving room. Another important advantage of the invention consists in the rapidity with which the contents of the tank can be heated to the unloading temperature, since it makes it possible to reduce the waiting time of the wagon.
To operate this device, a nozzle of the liquid fuel burner is introduced into the inlet of the heating pipe of the tank, so as to cause the flame to burn in the pipe. In order to protect the pipe, which can preferably be of mild steel, against the radiation of the flame, a heat-resistant, removable sleeve can be placed a short distance from its inlet port. and replaceable, which may preferably be cast iron.
The tank can advantageously comprise two heating pipes heated by separate liquid fuel burners. The inlet ports of the hoses can be at the end of the tank, and each hose can go from the inlet port to the other end of the tank, then back to a point near the end. intake where it bends in a vertical direction, then ends with an exhaust port located above the tank.
The device according to the invention is shown by way of example in the following schematic drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the tank for use on a railway car.
Figure 2 is a section along line II-II of the device of Figure 1 and
FIG. 3 is a section on a larger scale passing through the inlet of one of the heating pipes.
According to Figures 1 and 2, a tank 1 is intended to be mounted on a railway car and to transport bitumen or similar products. The tank comprises, as usual, a manhole 2, and a riser 3, as well as two heating pipes for the combustion gases. Each of these latter pipes has an intake port 4, a portion 5 in a general horizontal direction, a portion 6 in a general vertical direction and an exhaust port 7. The horizontal portion 5 starts from the intake port. 4, goes towards the opposite end of the reservoir, then comes back to a point near the inlet end where it rises, so as to form the vertical portion 6.
The exhaust ports 7 of the pipe have hinged covers 8 joined together by an element 90
The inlet port 4 of a. of the heating pipes is shown in detail in Figure 3. The end of the pipe has a flange 10 to which is bolted the flange of a cast iron sleeve 11 inserted into the orifice of the pipe. A cover plate 12 is fixed to the orifice of the sleeve 11 by means of articulated bolts 13 when the heating pipe is not in use.
The heating pipes can be of various diameters and satisfactory results have been obtained with an inside diameter of between 152 and 304 mm, for a wagon tank. In order to heat the charge of the tank 1 before unloading it, the cover plate 12 is removed from each heating pipe and the nozzle of an oil burner is inserted into each of them. The burners are preferably portable and are preferably of the type in which the fuel is sprayed with steam produced by the burner itself. The oil flame burns in the sleeve 11 which protects the orifice of the heating pipe and is easy to replace if necessary. The hot products of combustion pass through the heating pipes and exit through the exhaust ports 7.
It will be noted that in addition to the horizontal portion 5 of each pipe, the rising portion 6 is also located in the loading space of the tank. This solution has been found to significantly increase the rate at which the bitumen can heat up with a given fuel consumption.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This result is considered to be partly due to the fact that the bitumen in contact with the pipe portions 6 begins to melt early and the molten bitumen thus constitutes a convection path for the main mass of bitumen at the bottom. bottom of the tank in the vicinity of the horizontal portions 5 of the pipes.
