MEMBRE ARTIFICIEL,
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Fig. 10 est une coupe verticale suivant la ligne G-H de la Figa 9;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

ARTIFICIAL MEMBER,
The present invention relates to a knee joint for an artificial leg comprising means for easily performing the movements of walking and even going up and down stairs, sitting down, as well as performing other acts. currents that can be performed with a natural limb.
This joint has been scientifically studied from an arthrological point of view, in order to allow an amputee to bring the two parts of the leg at will, by the only movement of the stump or of the body, from the upright position to different positions. angular movements, during which the joint is always endowed, in any of the positions considered, with a fulcrum or stable support point which prevents it from bending under the weight of the body, thus preventing falls or a loss of balance This joint therefore allows the leg to be bent or bent at will to a determined angle,
the leg being able in this case to take the weight of the amputee without the risk that it continues to bend or to flex. To bring the leg back to its upright position, it suffices to lift it by a simple movement of the stump or by the inclination of the body when the antral leg ensures that it is upright. When these acts are thus performed in a rhythmic manner, the required movements of the artificial limb can be performed in the manner of a natural leg, in accordance with existing rules for prosthesis.
The characteristic of the invention lies essentially in the fact that the articulation is produced by the interlocking of two surfaces, each provided at one end of two joined elements, the arrangement being such that the surface corresponding to the interlocking cone or The thigh resembles a parabolic segment, while the surface which corresponds to the false calf is of a shape equal to that of the thigh, but presents a re-entrant or concave curve, so as to constitute an effective articulation.
The two elements of the artificial leg are united by a pivot fixed to one of these elements, while, in the other element, it passes through an arched slot or slide in which it pivots and moves. A joint
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
artificial thus established allows the shorts, as will be seen below., to play the role of a lever whose support or support point is on the pivot. The force developed in the shorts itself and the resistance to movement being tangent to the two surfaces of the joints so that, considering the leg in a given angular position, the joint cannot close beyond the angle at which it was placed.
In this way, the amputee continues to enjoy the required support without risking losing his balance.
One of the objects of the invention resides in an artificial leg having construction features which allow the dummy to perform more naturally or to simulate the movements of a human leg. In this connection, it should be noted that a particular feature of the invention resides in the connection between the false calf and the thigh, so that the relative movements of these elements are coordinated at the level of the knee, with provision. means for connecting the shorts to the false calf in such a way that the latter is maneuvered automatically and elastically with respect to the shorts.
The other objects will become apparent as the invention is described in more detail.
A preferred and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which
Fig. 1 is a side view, partly in section, showing the improvements according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, partly in section, of the construction shown in FIG. 1; fig 3 is a horizontal section taken along the line A-B of FIG. 2; Figo 4 is a horizontal section taken along line C-D in Fig. 2; Fig 5 is a horizontal section taken along line E-F of Fig 2;
Figa 6 is a detail view of the elastic control means provided between the thigh and the false calf;
Fig. 7 is a schematic view showing the relative position of the thigh and the false calf, when the latter are inclined in the sitting position;
Fig. 8 is a perspective and detailed view of the guide path secured to the thigh and intended to receive a pair of rollers;
Fig. 9 is a detail view of the ankle or pivot and of the guide means between the thigh and the. upper part of the false calf;
Fig. 10 is a vertical section taken on the line G-H of Figa 9;
Fig. 11 is a composite schematic view showing other relative positions between the thigh and the false calf.
By considering these figs we see that the artificial limb consists of a thigh piece a of a false calf b and a foot c
The adjacent parts of the thigh and the false calf are provided
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in the knee area of arched parts 1 and 2 nested one inside the other, the shorts being provided with a guide path 5 intended to receive the transverse member 3 of a lever 4
The shorts have an end of a shape different from that of a spheroids but similar to that of a paraboloid, and the outer surface 1 of which starts at the level of the patella of the knee, which will be called .
here the pelée anterior has' this surface ending at a lower level, at the posterior part, or the popliteal region, which we will here denominate the posterior pale a and which presents a less important radius The second element or false calf (or leggings), that is to say the peroneotibial element b has a concave part forming a groove and which adjusts according to the shape of part a of the thigh, this surface being designated by the number 20
The knee portion of the shorts is provided with a slot 14 through which a knee joint pivot 19 which will be. described in detail below and which contributes to ensuring the articulation connection between the thigh and the false calf.
On the middle part of this bolt pivots the eyelet 15 of a control member constituted by the telescopic elements 11 and 12, the latter being subjected to the action of a spring 13 housed in the tubular part 11 The upper part 12 of the control member is provided with rollers 23 intended to roll in guides 24 carried by the bib and having the curvature of the complementary knee element, integral with the thigh.
The lower end of the actuator is pivotally connected at 7 to the yoke 8 and, furthermore, the lower end of the part 11 of the actuator is provided with a cam. prominent 29 intended to cooperate with resilient elements 30 suitably curved ,, mounted at one end of the yoke 8 and whose free ends elastically engage the tip of the cam 29
The control member described above is also subjected to the influence of a tensioning member which consists of an elastic loop x or its equivalent, anchored around part 11 of the control member - and joined together to a screw y which in turn engages in the threaded part of a control nut z so that, by actuating this nut,
the screw y moves in the direction of its axis to apply a greater or lesser tension to the elastic loop x
When the thigh and the false-calf are located one in the extension of the other, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the control member contributes to the stability of the knee joint o On the other hand, when the thigh and the false calf a and b move to occupy the relative angular position shown in fig 7, the control member determines an additional frictional resistance between the rollers 23 and the raceway 24 so that when the person provided with the artificial limb wishes to take an upright position, the false calf moves backwards to the position normal. 9 with an equal or uniform movement,
as opposed to the sudden movement which would otherwise have resulted from the relative displacements of a and b, that is to say if this movement were influenced only by the pivot 19 and its associated members.
It will be noted that in the upright position of the leg, like that shown in FIG. 1, the support is normal given the presence of a significant contact area between the two surfaces 1 and 2 of the slot.
To walk or. To climb stairs, the amputee will try to lift the artificial leg by leaning on the other leg. Thus, the shorts will occupy an angular position as shown in Fig. 11 in which it will now be able to support the body. It will be noted that, in this position and thanks to the shape of surfaces 1 and 2, the pole a of the first element, that is to say of the shorts, rests on a point
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of the second element or false calf and that, between said point and the pivot 3, there is a lever arm which tends to prevent the thigh from tilting beyond said position on the leg or false calf b since the thigh cannot rotate freely around said pivot 3.
It goes without saying that, when the shorts occupy the position in question, the end of this shorts has, in addition to a rotation around the pivot 3, a forward movement along the guides formed by the slots 5.
In the case of FIG. 7 which substantially corresponds to the seated position of the amputee the angular play of the two parts of the artificial limb will be limited by the fact that the thigh a is supported on the posterior edge a "of the surface 2 which corresponds to the peroneotibial part b , a support which therefore occurs in the region of the crease of the knee or of the shank of the leg, the thigh having moved until the pivot 3 arrives at the other end of the slots 5 thus forming secondary support.
According to arthrological science, natural movements can be easily reproduced, in a manner which will improve as the amputee acquires the habit without danger of loss of balance, being given that, when the weight of the body comes to rest on the prosthesis leg, whatever the angular position of that, -c here, we will always obtain the double support which was discussed in connection with the position of Figo 11.
In cases of osteotomy, or the amputation of both legs above the knee, it will be useful to provide artificial legs provided with a knee joint established in accordance with the present invention, since the amputee will readily acquire skill. walking, with rhythmic inclination of the body and each of the stumps.
It goes without saying that variations can be made, while remaining within the scope of the claims below.
