TURBINE A COMBUSTION INTERNE
La Fige 1 représente une section longitudinale de la turbine suivant le plan de symétrie I-I de la Fig. 2;

Le compresseur C;
La turbine proprement dite T;
Une ou plusieurs chambres de combustion B (cinq dans l'exemple);
L'appareil de refroidissement R;
(Fig. 3).
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

INTERNAL COMBUSTION TURBINE
The present invention relates to an internal combustion turbine, characterized in that its parts, either fixed or rotating, are cooled according to a particular system; the combustion temperature can be kept very high, without prejudice to the resistance of the parts of the turbine exposed to such temperatures and without the need for the use of special metals.
The turbine according to the invention is further provided with devices for reducing the work of compressing the fuel air and with others for using the heat of the exhaust gases, so that of the machine is greater than that obtained with known similar machines.,
The accompanying drawings demonstrate schematically and by way of non-limiting example, one embodiment of the invention.

Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken for the upper half along the radial plane I-I of FIG. 2 and for the lower half along the radial plane III-III, at 45 with the vertical plane; Fig. 4 shows in particular a longitudinal section made along an axial plane in correspondence with the rotating vanes;

Fig. 8 indicates a detail of the assembly of a fixed vane and
Fig. 9 a section perpendicular to the axis of the casing of the turbine after removing the rotor.
Referring to Figs., The turbine comprises the following parts - test
Compressor C;
The actual turbine T;
One or more combustion chambers B (five in the example);
The cooling device R;
The heaters F (two in the example).
The machine is mounted on shaft 1 rotating on bearings 2 and 3 and connected to the transmission by flange 4.
The air enters through the opening 5 and is successively compressed in the turbo-compressor C with several orders of vanes, divided into two groups 6 and 6 'by a chamber 8. The compressor casing 7 is double-walled. with water circulation. From the chamber 8, the partially compressed air passes through the tube 9 into the device R where it undergoes cooling which has the effect of reducing the successive compression work.
According to a preferred form, this apparatus R is a cylinder with a horizontal axis divided into two half-cylinders 10 and 11 by a sector 12 which leaves passages to the air only in correspondence with the ends of the cylinder.
The tube 9 is also divided into two parts by the longitudinal diaphragm 13, which is the extension of the same diaphragm which separates the rotor of the compressor G into two groups 6 and 6 '.
The cooling water of the apparatus R reaches a chamber 14 at the head of the apparatus itself. This chamber is also divided into two halves by the sector 15. Towards the apparatus, the chamber 14 has a tube plate 16. where the pipes terminate 17. These first run through the upper part 10 of the apparatus, pass through the diaphragm 13 and terminate at the other tube plate 16 'and at the chamber 14', d 'where they return to the tubesheet 16, and the water circulating in the pipes, arriving at the lower part of the chamber 14, passes to the discharge 18.
The path of the air to be cooled is indicated by the arrow and the air returning to the compressor in the chamber 19 undergoes the second compression phase in the second group of vanes 6 'arriving at the chamber 20 which is in contact. with the combustion chamber.
(Fig. 3). From chamber 20, the air is distributed between the two heaters F
The air first circulates in the gap 22 of the cylinders F (Fig. 3) to use the heat of the exhaust gases which. pass through the heater F in its internal part, as we will see further on, and then, by means of the pipe 23, it passes into the chamber 24 where there is a tube plate 25 where pipes terminate which are traversed by air to be reheated, which thus passes to chamber 26 beyond another plate 25 '. From chamber 26, the air passes, still by means of pipes which run the entire length of the heater, to chamber 27, from where, by means of pipes 28, it passes to combustion chambers B which are in sufficient number.
In the example illustrated in Figs., These chambers are five in number and arranged radially in the upper part of the turbine.
The air from the pipes passes into the chambers-29, which have inside a conical part crossed by a series of holes, by means of which the air comes into contact with the fuel injected by the nozzle 31 into the chamber. conical 30. By the high temperature, the fuel ignites and the products invade the chamber 32 from which, through the fixed vanes 33, they actuate a first series of rotating vanes 34 of the turbine, discharging themselves. thus in room 35, where there is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
if necessary, complete combustion by means of an additional air intake from the chamber 20 of the compressor.
Then, from chamber 35 and through an alternating series of fixed and rotating vanes, the gases actuate the entire turbine and escape into chamber 36, from where, distributed in two parts, they pass through. the passages 38 to the heaters F already described, each of which is in turn divided by a horizontal sector 37, which forces the combustion products to pass through the heaters F by a reverse path to that which. traverses, as we have seen, the air coming from chamber 20.
Fig. 4 shows, as has been said, the cooling system of the rotors of the vane system of the T turbines.
The rotors are mounted on the shaft 1 at the ends of which are wedged two brackets 41 on the outer surface of which is mounted a hollow shaft 42, concentric with the shaft 1 and rotating with the latter. On the hollow shaft are mounted the discs 43-43'-43 ", each of which is formed by two flanges 44-44- ', facing each other and joined towards the periphery by a ring 45 which closes all around the internal cavity comprised between the two flanges 44 and 44 '. This cavity is in turn divided into two equal chambers 46 and 46' by a diaphragm 47.
The vanes 48 are hollow and arranged with the base in suitable fits, obtained at the periphery of the disks 43 and 43 '. (See Figs. 5 and 6). The adjustments of the vanes on the discs are made so as to leave under the base of the vanes themselves a chamber 49, which is in communication with the chambers 46 and 46 'through the holes 50 and 50'. The pairs of holes 50 and 50 'are substantially in correspondence with each vane.
On the hollow shaft 42 are made holes 51 in correspondence with the chambers 46 and 46 'of the various discs. Circular diaphragms 52, integral with the central shaft 1 and forming a body on the inner surface of the hollow shaft 42, are arranged in correspondence with each diaphragm 47 and divide the gap between the shaft 1 and 1. 'hollow shaft 42 in as many zones as there are disks in the turbine.
At the head of the shaft 1 is mounted a centrifugal vacuum cleaner which, with its series of blades 54, sucks fresh air from the other end of the shaft itself.
This aspiration is made possible by the fact that all the chambers 53-53'-53 ".... are in communication with each other. Indeed., The air which is for example in the chamber 53, passes through the holes 51 in chamber 46. From there it enters the interior of vane 48 through hole 50. It then passes through chamber 46 'through hole 50' and through other holes 51 to the left of the diaphragm 52 to the chamber 53 ', from where it begins a similar course, until reaching the vacuum cleaner 54, which conveys this air into the exhaust chamber 55.
Next to the vacuum cleaner 54 is installed a second vacuum cleaner 56, which sucks in air on its own account, to use it for cooling the distributors of the turbine.
The spaces 57 between two rows of vanes of the same plane., Are occupied by fixed guide vanes.
The chamber 58, to which the combustion gases arrive after having worked on all the rows of blades, is in communication with the exhaust through the recuperators F, as we have seen previously.
As seen in Figs. 7, 8, 9, the guide vanes of the turbine are fixed to the periphery of a series of diaphragms distributed along its shaft. These diaphragms are hollow cylindrical bodies 61, 62 ... each of which is divided into two halves by a horizontal diametral plane, that is to say along the line 0-0 of FIG. 9.
These diaphragms have an elongated U section; between the two branches of the U, the blades are embedded. After mounting these on the diaphragms, the vanes undergo an external turning, which allows the diameters
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The same phrases, to which the vanes are attached, to fit into appropriate cavities of the turbine cage, while the end of the vanes fit into fits also obtained in the cage.
The vanes are empty internally, as has already been said for rotary vanes.
Fig. 7 shows in section the two diaphragms 61 and 62 with their mounted vanes 63 and 64. The vane 63 is in elevation; vane 64 is cut along the center line to show duct 65.
In the interior space 66, included between the two walls of the hollow half-disk, which constitutes the diaphragm 61, are distributed radially the ribs 67 which appear in elevation in FIG. 7 and in section in FIG. 9.
In the same Fig. 7 are drawn in dotted lines the disks 44 and 44 'of the rotor of the turbine, which carry at their periphery the rotating blades 48 and 48'. The gases arriving at the turbine enter through "a" and exit through "b".
The turbine cage 69 contains the ducts 72 and 73 as a foundry, which communicate with the duct 74 by means of the windows 75 and 76. The same construction is repeated symmetrically in the lower half of the cage.
The fan 56 conveys the air in the duct 74 (Fig. 4-7-9) from where, through the ducts 65 made in the interior of the blades, the said air arrives at the central part 66 of the diaphragms, covering the entire surface of the ribs 67.
In Fig. 7 the chamber 73 appears in communication with the conduit 65 by means of the hole 77. This communication is naturally necessary for the above circulation to take place. Note however that the hole 77 corresponding to the blade 63 is not visible, because it is out of phase with the hole 77 of the blade 64.
The chamber 74 is limited by the two longitudinal partitions 78 and 78 ', which delimit a sector in which is included a certain number of distributor vanes. It has already been said that the cooling air passes through the chamber 74 to the central part 66 of the diaphragms. From this point, observing the upper half of the cage (Fig. 9), we see that two paths are open to the air, and precisely one to the right and the other to the left towards the chambers 79 and 80, through passages 65.
Chambers 79 and 80 are in turn in communication with chambers 81 and 82. Then, the air which has arrived in chambers 81 and 82 from zone 66 of the upper part of the cage will pass through. by the conduits 65 between the horizontal plane 0-0 and the sectors 83 and 83 'in the zone 66' of the lower part of the cage, and finally join it, always through the passages 65, the chamber 86, symmetrical to chamber 74, but in communication with the exhaust.
In other words, since the sectors 78 and 78 ', 83 and 83' divide the chambers, arranged outside the cage, into four symmetrical parts two by two, the cooling air travels alternately. centriped and centrifugal from the inlet to the exhaust. This circulation takes place in parallel for all the series of blades distributed longitudinally in the turbine along each sector, the opposite of what we have seen with regard to the cooling circulation of the rotating blades, which takes place serial.
