ALLIAGE INOXYDABLE DURCISSABLE PAR TRAITEMENT THERMIQUE NOTAMMENT POUR RES-
SORTS D'HORLOGERIE.

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

STAINLESS STEEL HARDENABLE ALLOY BY THERMAL TREATMENT ESPECIALLY FOR RES-
WATCH-MAKING SPELLS.
Heat treatment hardenable alloys are well known and have been widely used in industry since the invention of duralumins.
Unlike steel, these alloys are softened by high temperature charting followed by rapid quenching and are hardened by tempering at an appropriate temperature. It is generally accepted that at the soft state their constituents are in solid solution, while in the hardened state a part of these are in a form insoluble in the base metal.
The investigations which the authors of the present patent have carried out have shown that the addition of colombium improves the mechanical properties of the nickel-cobalt-iron alloys in a remarkable manner without diminishing their high resistance to corrosion.
The addition of colombium is particularly effective in the presence of titanium, so that the simultaneous presence of Cb and Ti makes it possible to reach with non-carbide alloys tempered between 500 and 7000 an elastic limit and a toughness similar to that of l 'hardened carbon steel .. To have these properties, the alloy may contain: cobalt 20 to 45% nickel 20 to 35% iron 10 to 25% titanium 1 to 5% colombium 5%.
The canvas amount of the last two metals being between 3 and 7%.
The great elasticity due to the. simultaneous presence of columbium and

titanium is not diminished by the addition to this alloy of significant amounts of chromium up to 20%

tungsten TI 10 molybdenum fi l0 tantalum fi 5 which makes it non-magnetic and increases its resistance to sea water and to many chemical agents. As in the case of all ferrous alloys, an addition of manganese facilitates the manufacture by its deoxidizing and desulfurizing action.
Depending on the proportions of nickel and chromium within the limits indicated, the structure of the alloy is ferritic or austenitic; in both cases, the great elasticity due to the simultaneous presence of columbium and titanium makes it possible to manufacture springs with this alloy, in particular for watchmaking, exhibiting properties superior to those of the springs used until now. .
This is how the magnetic alloy:

These examples show that the simultaneous addition of columbium and titanium makes it possible to prepare an alloy having high mechanical characteristics and at the same time high resistance to corrosion due to the absence of carbon and the presence of a high content of carbon. nickel and cobalt as well as additions such as chromium, tungsten, molybdenum and tantalum, on the other hand, this alloy can be machined in the soft state and undergo a hardening heat treatment, the effect of which is not not limited to the surface and which does not cause deformation as is the case with carbon steel.
This alloy is therefore remarkably suitable for the production of parts which, while having to resist oxidation, must have great hardness or great elasticity, such as for example springs, pivots, parts in contact with chemical agents, sea water or atmospheric agents.
It makes it possible in particular to replace ;, thanks to its high elastic limit, its high Young's modulus and its great toughness, the hardened steel clockwork springs by springs of the same dimensions which are not subject to breaks caused by rust or internal stresses resulting from quenching.
