<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 1 montre en élévation de face, un mode de réalisation;
Figs.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
En fonctionnement normal,le levier 9 est incatifetimmobilisé par le verrou 14 occupant la position représentée sur la figure;
. Le câble de commande 8 est fixé par son extrémité à l'extrémité du levier 27, l'organe tubulaire de réglage, usuel, 33, du .dit. câble,, traver- sant a jeu l'extrémité 34 du levier coudé 32, et un écrou 35, engage. sur l'or- gane 33, permettant de régler la position du dit levier;

"BRAKE IMPROVEMENTS FOR CYCLES AND THE LIKE".
The invention relates to brakes for cycles and the like, and relates in particular, among these brakes, to those comprising two jaws articulated between them and capable of being brought together to put pressure on a member to be braked. , such as the rim of a bicycle wheel, or a similar member, under the action of a control cable on which traction is exerted, while they. are elastically separated from each other when the traction ceases on the control cable.
The aim of the invention is to provide a brake of the type in question of so-called safety, that is to say capable of providing automatic approach of the brake shoes in the event of a break in the control cable, in particular, continuity of braking if this rupture occurs while traction is exerted on the control cable by the driver of the vehicle.
To this end, it consists in associating with a brake device of the aforementioned type, at least one lever, articulated on the device and requested by an elastic member, which tends to act on the jaws to bring them closer to one of the another, this lever being normally kept in the inactive position, with the elastic member which urges it under tension, by a lock controlled by a member of the cable control and by means of a play link.
According to a preferred embodiment, a system of two levers is associated with the brake device, one of which is on the one hand biased by a spring and on the other hand connected to one of the brake shoes by a connection to play, and the other is connected to the first lever and to the other jaw by links of which at least one is in play.
The lock control set link can be connected to the brake shoes or an associated member; it can also be linked to a lever articulated on the device, to which the brake control cable is attached, and which carries a cam acting on the brake shoes or else it may comprise a lever articulated on the device and adjustable in position relative to the aforementioned cam lever.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
An elastic member may be provided to assist in triggering the lock.
And so that in any event the invention may be fully understood, some embodiments and embodiments, shown, sometimes, will be described below in somewhat more detail, and of course by way of examples only. more or less schematically, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows in front elevation, an embodiment;
Figs. 2 and 3 show in a similar manner another embodiment as well as an alternative embodiment.
With reference to the drawings, and first of all to FIG. 1, 1 and 2 denote the shoes of a brake of a conventional type, articulated together on a common axis 3 and normally separated from each other by a spring 4, these shoes receiving brake pads 5 mounted in the usual way.
The jaws 1 and 2 are provided with extensions 6 and 7 in which the control cable 8 is arranged as shown.
To achieve the invention, the brake can be organized as follows:
On one of the jaws, and for example the extension 7 of the jaw 2, a lever 9 is articulated, in particular by engaging its end on the pin 10 of this extension 7 in which the cable is retained. 8, said lever being shaped so as to be able to act on the other jaw 1, for example on its extension 6, to bring said jaws together, when its free end 11 is moved in a suitable direction, that is here towards the bottom, by an elastic member, such as the tension spring 12, mounted between this end 11 and an appropriate attachment point 13, which can be chosen on the jaw 2.
On the other hand, in order to allow the brake to operate under the action of its control cable 8 when the latter is complete, and under the combined action of the lever 9 and of the spring 12 if the cable 8 should come out. break, a movable, erasable lock is provided, mounted between the lever 9 and a fixed point.
This lock can be formed in various ways, for example by a lever 14 articulated at 15 on a base 16 rigidly fixed to a stationary part, such as for example the attachment, partially shown at 17, of the brake on the fork of the bicycle, (not shown) and engaging by an end hook 18 on a pin 19 of the lever 9.
To actuate the lock 14, a play connection is provided between said lock and one of the jaws, which allows this jaw to move freely under the control of the cable 8 when the latter is complete, but which, when said jaw is more or less abruptly brought to the maximum open position by the spring 4, when the cable 8 breaks, acts on the latch 14 to move it away from the engagement position of the hook 18 on the pin 19. In the example, the aforementioned connection is constituted by a link 20, articulated by one end, at 21, on an arm 22 fixed to the jaw 2, and engaged by an elongated slot 23 at its other end on a pin. the 24 of lever 14.
It will be understood that once the hook 18 has been released from the pin 19, the lever 9, urged by the spring 12, brings the jaws 1 and 2 towards each other by applying the brake, the latter remaining applied for as long. time that, by appropriate external action, the lever 9 and the latch 14 have not been returned to the positions shown in the figure, implying that the driver is conscious or has remedied the breakage of the cable 8 .
In Figure 2, the lever 9 is articulated on the one hand on the extension 6, by an ankle 61 able to move in an elongated slot 62 of the lever, and it is also articulated on the extension 7, but by
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the intermediary of a rod 25 of which -¯.ne end pivots on the pin 10 and the other end carries a pin 26 sliding in an elongated slot 261 of the lever 9.
On the other hand, the fitting 16 on which the locking lever 14 is articulated is extended downwards and its lower end provides the hooking point 13 for the spring 12.
The rod 20 forming the latch release linkage is mounted on the lever 14 by means of the elongated slot 23 engaged on the pin 24 at one end, while its other end is hinged at 211 on a lever 27 to which is connected, by the pivot 28, and the conventional adjusting device 281, the end of the control cable 8.
The lever 27 is provided with an extension 29 shaped as a cam, and acting on the jaw 1 of the brake to determine the application of the latter when a traction is exerted on the cable 8
If desired, a return spring 30 can be provided between the end of the lever 27 and a fixed point, such as an appendage 31 of the extension 7 or an extension of the rod 25, to aid in the release of the worm. - wheel 14, when, with the cable 8 being broken, the brake shoes move apart more or less sharply, as much as possible, from each other
In normal operation, the lever 9 is incatifet immobilized by the latch 14 occupying the position shown in the figure;
the jaws are actuated by the movement of the lever 27 and the action of the cam 29, the pegs 6 * and 26 sliding in the slots 62 and 261 If the cable 8 breaks, the lever 27 released and requested both by the spacing of the jaws 1 and 2 only by inertia and, where appropriate, the action of the spring 30, drives the rod 20 and through it the latch 14, releasing the hook 18 from the pin 19, and by allowing the spring 12 to actuate the lever 9, which, by means of the pins 6 and 26 and the rod 25, determines the approach of the extensions 6 and 7 and the application of the brake.
The reestablishment of normal conditions is obtained as before.
The arrangement of the pin 3 is generally similar to that of FIG. 2, except that the play connection of the rod 20 is transferred to the other end of the latter; in particular, the elongated slot 23 is formed in a. elbow lever 32 articulated on the extension 7 at the same time as the lever 27 has cam 29 acting on the jaws .du brake.
. The control cable 8 is fixed by its end to the end of the lever 27, the usual tubular adjustment member 33 of the said. cable, passing with play the end 34 of the elbow lever 32, and a nut 35, engages. on the member 33, making it possible to adjust the position of said lever;
32 and subsequently, the play of the lock control 14. If desired, a spring 36 can be fitted between the levers 32 and 27 to assist in triggering the lock,
The operation is in substance the same as in the case of the arrangement according to fig. 2
Although we have confined ourselves to the more detailed description of certain arrangements only, it should be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but rather encompasses modifications and variations. laughing.
