<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Special bolt for the assembly of wooden elements." Patent application filed in Danmark on September 21, 1948.
The present invention relates to improvements. made to bolts used for the assembly of wooden elements, of the type comprising a cylindrical rod provided with a head and one or more radial fins, fixed to the rod. preventing rotation of the bolt when it is driven into the wooden elements.
Bolts of this type known to date are provided with a rectangular protrusion, disposed near the head of the bolt, and when the bolt shank is driven into the wooden elements to be assembled, this protrusion is also depressed until the head abuts against the surface of the element. This protrusion prevents rotation of the bolt, when the nut

is screwed onto the threaded part of the latter. However, it has been observed that bolts of this type have a tendency to split wooden elements, moreover, they pivot easily when used in soft wood.
To eliminate these drawbacks, it has been proposed to provide the bolts with a cylindrical rod, having a series of radial fins, the edges of which extend from the underside of the bolt head towards the face of the bolt. stem, were sharp. In this way the fins had to prevent the bolt from rotating when it was driven into the wood.
However, it has been observed that, because of the triangular section of the fins, they have a tendency to lose their grip in the wood.
The object of the present invention is to manufacture a metal bolt of the type in question, which, however, has a firm grip in the wood, while preventing its rotation, even in very soft wood and, according to the invention, this object is reached by rectangular fins, the outer edges of which extend approximately to the periphery of the bolt head.
One embodiment, given by way of non-limiting example, is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a bolt according to the invention.
Fig. 2 shows a bolt, seen from its lower end.
The bolt consists of a cylindrical rod 1, the lower end of which is provided with a thread 2, which can engage in a nut 7 after the bolt has been driven into the wooden elements to be assembled. At its upper end, the rod carries a head 3, the lower face of which is flat.
According to the invention, the rod 1 is provided, for example, with two fins 5 and 6, which extend axially from the inside face.

of the head 3 along the face of the rod and project radially from the latter. Each fin 5 and 6 is rectangular in shape and its end edges extend approximately to the outer edge of the head 3, so that the upper edges of the fins are covered by the head 3 of the bolt.
In the embodiment shown, the fins 5 and 6 are both rigidly fixed in the head 3 of the bolt and form a body with the latter, which can be obtained either by casting or by stamping. However, the fins can also be arranged at a slight distance from the head of the bolt.
The fins, according to the invention, can be relatively thick without the risk of splitting the wood of the elements to be assembled, when they are driven into a hole, drilled in them, since the fins are generally driven transversely by compared to wood fibers.
Instead of two fins, depending on the drawing, only one or any series may be used; however, it is certain that the risk of wood cracking increases with the number of fins with which the bolt shank is fitted.
