Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Process for the production of ores, for example iron ores.
The invention relates to a process for the production of ores, and especially iron ores. Its main purpose is to simplify the production furnaces and to avoid the fuel coketing which was previously done in special coke ovens. The process according to the invention also makes it possible to obtain the same liquid products, and optionally also gaseous products, by carbonization at low temperature or coking of the fuel.
This problem is solved according to the invention by briquetting fine ore with fine caliber fuel and by agglomerating, for example, consisting of marl, slaked lime or pitch and by placing these briquettes in the oven, giving the load a height of about 1.50 to 3 meters counted from the plane of the nozzles, establishing the section of the furnace in such a way that ladis- @
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tance between the nozzles arranged opposite one another does not exceed 2m., by pushing hot air through the nozzles, by constructing the furnace in the form of cupola with a pouring chute, connected to one or more before -crucibles through a chute, and periodically pouring the iron which accumulates in the pre-crucible (s).
The usual mode of operation of the blast furnace, where a significant quantity of liquid iron constantly accumulates in the lower part of the furnace, offers the disadvantage that when the periodic casting of the iron is carried out, it occurs. each time a sudden descent of the load. On the contrary, the process according to the invention has the advantage of giving rise only to small fluctuations in the height of the load and consequently to small variations in the temperature and pressure conditions of the furnace.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the load is brought to the oven uniformly, in quantities corresponding to the weight of the charging, for example by means of an airlock. Another embodiment of the invention consists in providing the furnace with a loading tube connected at the top to a hopper or a hold, and in introducing into the loading tube between the hopper and the mouth, a oxygen-free gas, for example nitrogen.
It is also possible to make the mouth of the loading tube height adjustable by means of a second telescopic pipe so as to be able to vary the height of the load.
In the known blast furnaces, the charging at the mouth is done in spurts, which each time causes abrupt variations in the conditions of pressure and temperature at the mouth. By virtue of other arrangements in accordance with the invention, on the contrary, it is possible to keep the height of the load in the furnace constant.
Because in the cupola with channel according to the invention
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
there is a regular flow of the cast iron and the slag, the sudden periodic sliding of the load which occurs in the usual operation of blast furnaces is avoided. This has a very particular advantage in the shaft furnace with a low load height of about 1.50 to 3 m. which is the subject of the invention.
The execution of the shaft furnace in the form of a chute cupola also offers the advantage that the treatment of the mixed briquettes does not give rise in the zone of the tuyeres to a coke bed through which the slag falls in large drops, because here the melting of the slag and the cast iron and the combustion of carbon take place in the plane of the nozzles. Under these conditions, the small drops of iron are blown away very easily by the wind through the slag taphole, so that the slag does not entrain large quantities of iron.
The gathering of the cast iron and the slag outside the shaft furnace in the fore-crucible still offers the additional advantage of allowing iron ores to be melted by the acid or semi-acid process poor, very easy desulphurization of the cast iron outside the shaft furnace by the introduction into the slag flow chute or into the arrival of the slag and the cast iron in the fore-crucible, soda or of finely ground slaked lime, which gives the slag the basicity necessary for desulphurization.
According to another characteristic of the invention, it is possible to heat the fore-crucible, in the event that, for large quantities of basic additions, additional heat is necessary.
The appended drawing represents an exemplary embodiment of the installation in which the process is carried out. The briquettes which are formed of fine grade ores mixed with small caliber coal with the addition of marl as a binder are loaded into hopper a. From there they come by the tube
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
loading b in the shaft furnace ç,. The operation is guaranteed in such a way that the hopper is always full. The column of briquettes in the loading tube ensures practically sufficient closure of the oven.
However, to prevent in any case that air can enter the oven through the charging pipe b, is introduced through the pipe d, which is preferably provided with a throttle member, exhaust gases cooled and de-tar which come from the shaft furnace, by re-blowing them under a slight pressure, for example by means of a centrifugal blower. Two exhaust pipes are fitted there in the cap f of the furnace for the top gases and the carbonization gases. The height of the load from the nozzles h to the upper edge of the furnace vessel is approximately 1.50 to 3 meters.
At the bottom of the furnace there is a tap hole i, to which a chute k is connected. The figure shows that the furnace is constructed as a cupola with a pouring chute. Slag and iron therefore flow through the taphole in a continuous fashion.
The chute k opens into a fore-crucible m which has at the lower part a tap hole n for the iron. In addition, it is also provided with a tap hole o for the slag. It is fitted at the top with a cover p. In the middle of the latter is a gas burner q. The hot gases escape through one or more pipes 1:. A pipe s open at the bottom and connected at its upper part to a hopper t is disposed on the scoring chute k. In this pipe is mounted a wheel with compartments u which allows a regular arrival of the sulfur from the hopper t. This soda mixes in the chute k with the iron and the slag and causes the sulfur to be removed from the liquid iron.
Instead of the loading tube shown, it is also possible to fit in the furnace supply device, an airlock controlled automatically by a feeler mounted in the furnace, for example by
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
setting up the airlock in the form of a wheel with compartments and operating it by an electric motor. The feeler then automatically engages the motor, as soon as the upper surface of the load has dropped below a determined level. The load column increases when the compartment wheel is actuated, and as soon as it has reached a certain level the feeler is lifted to such an extent that it interrupts the supply of current to the electric motor. The feeler can be set up in such a way that the column height of the load then varies only within small limits.
As has been said above, gas from the top is introduced through the pipe after having been cooled and de-tar in a condensing installation.
The briquetting is preferably done in egg-shaped chip presses. If the coal ore and coal are not already naturally lumpy or fine grain or if they have not been reduced in production processes, they should be ground prior to briquetting, preferably until a caliber of about 0 to 6 mm is obtained. and a maximum of approximately 10 mm. They are then mixed with a binder, for example marl, slaked lime or pitch, after which they are given the desired shape in the presses.
When the briquettes are introduced into the kiln there immediately occurs a low temperature carbonization of the fuel, and the carbonization gases escape through the pipes g together with the top gases themselves. This gas mixture is then brought into a condensation installation, preferably after having passed through a dedusting installation. In this installation, the products of carbonization in the vapor state are precipitated and removed in the liquid state.
In this way, not only top gases which consist of CO and CO2 etc. are removed from the shaft furnace. but still very valuable carbonization products. In addition, gases
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
top gases acquire as a result of their mixture with carbonization gases a calorific power significantly higher than the top gases of conventional blast furnaces.
As coal, a coal which is not suitable for the manufacture of metallurgical coke can be employed. However, the use of fuels which can be used for carrying out the invention is not limited to this coal.
