<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

sitif d'assemblage des tubes, Elle est principalement carac- térisée par le fait que les tubes du cadre sont faits en un alliage métallique léger ayant une grande résistance et une grande dureté mais ayant une élasticité relativement faible, l'assemblage des coins du cadre étant avantageusement réali- sée au moyen d'organes de liaison ou raccords revêtant la forme de manchons en alliage de métal léger ayant une plus faible résistance et une plus faible dureté, mais une élasti- cité plus élevée que celle des tubes susmentionnés;

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Device for frames of bicycles made of light metal tubes and method of constructing same ft.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a device for bicycle frames made of light metal tubes, in the form of tubular connections, and to a method of constructing these connections. or fittings.
In order to reduce the weight of the bicycles, attempts have been made to manufacture the greatest possible number of their parts in light metals, that is to say in alloys whose main constituent is aluminum or magnesium. In such cases, however, the manufacture of the frame itself, which is the heaviest part of the bicycle, has encountered difficulties. These rise as well in the case of use of hardened pipes as of hardened pipes. If, for example, aluminum alloys of the "durai" type are used which are quenched, it is not possible to weld the tubes forming the frame during assembly, since this results in a sharp decrease in strength due to loss of hardness.
Another disadvantage caused by the use of alloys of this type is that the welded parts are exposed to corrosion attack due to the metallurgical changes which occur during welding. If, on the other hand, work-hardened tubes made of an alloy which cannot be hardened are used, there is nevertheless a decrease in the resistance at the welded points, due to the fact that the material is annealed at these points. Further, the welding of high alloy content aluminum alloys which have excellent strength properties is relatively difficult to perform compared to low alloy content alloys having lower strength. The welding of magnesium alloys likewise involves rather great difficulties.
According to the present invention, the difficulties caused by welding are avoided by adopting another arrangement.

assembly of the tubes, It is mainly characterized by the fact that the tubes of the frame are made of a light metal alloy having great strength and hardness but having a relatively low elasticity, the assembly of the corners of the frame being advantageously carried out by means of connecting members or fittings in the form of sleeves of light metal alloy having a lower strength and a lower hardness, but a higher elasticity than that of the aforementioned tubes;
whereby the ends of the walls of the tubes which enter the sleeves are pierced with holes or have notches corresponding to the latter, a stop being housed inside the tube, preferably in the form of a tubular member. - Aire of high strength hard metal alloy such as steel, comprising shoulders corresponding to said holes or notches and in which the material of the sleeve is pressed by the deformation of the latter.
The tubes of the frame can therefore be advantageously made of an aluminum alloy having a relatively low elasticity and a Brinell index ranging from 90 to 140, or even more, i.e. of such a high value. - Vee that can be obtained with this material, while the metal constituting the sleeve will have a relatively good elasticity and a Brinell index ranging from 50 to 90. For the implementation of the invention, all types of metal casing may of course be employed, this casing being made of light metal and also including those, for example, which have a high magnesium content.
Tubing made of dural alloys or the like, which is quenched prior to assembly, can be well used, as can tubing of hardened hydronalium or similar hard non-quenching alloys.
If magnesium alloys are used, it will be preferred

It is possible that the material constituting the sleeve has a Brinell index of about 55 to 84 or more, of course, one part can be made with an aluminum alloy, and the other with a magnesium alloy, assuming their hardness and their resistance are adapted as described.
The following data may be given as examples of suitable materials, bearing in mind that all figures are approximate and may naturally vary within wide limits without thereby preventing the material from being suitable for the intended purpose.

The appended drawing relates to a method or process for implementing the invention and it is moreover given only by way of example. In this drawing: - Figure 1 is an elevational view, parts in section, of a corner member of the frame close to the seat tube; - Figure 2 is a sectional view along Il- !! fig.
1.
According to the embodiment shown, the sleeve 1 is made of a relatively soft light metal of the "silumim" type having the shape of an angular organa in which are fitted the two frame tubes 3, which are of high strength and hardness, by example of the "durai" type. In order to obtain the necessary strength in the construction, the material in the sleeves is given a much greater thickness than that of the walls of the frame tubes.
The tubes 3 are pierced with holes 2; in the current example, these holes form two groups arranged concentrically, each comprising four holes arranged symmetrically. The number of holes and groups can naturally be different. Shoulders 4 are provided inside the tubes 3, taking, in the current example, the form of ubular steel members having dimensions such that they act as a stop when the sleeve is subjected to pressure. during the introduction by pressure of the metal of
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
sleeve in the holes or grooves 2. In order to ensure the seal, corresponding holes are provided in the shoulder 4, into which also penetrates the metal of the sleeve, as shown in the drawing.
The device shown, in which the sleeve 1 takes the form of an angular member, can be used at one or more of the corners of the frame, the sleeves thus being able to constitute parts of the frame and supports for the seat tube, the front fork and the bottom bracket, at the respective locations of the frame, for example, but it is of course also possible to use short and restilinear sleeves for the assemblies of the frame according to the invention at all desired points.
The assembly of parts 1, 3 and 4 during assembly in the form of a sleeve obtained by casting or forging or of a work-hardened or tempered light metal tube and a steel or other shoulder suitable hard material, is made by subjecting the sleeve to a pressure, preferably cold, between jaws and in such a way that the metal of the sleeve penetrates, as a result of the pressure in the holes, grooves or recesses provided in the tubes of the frame. A solid assembly is thus obtained between the sleeve, the tube and the shoulder. To this end, more than two jaws can advantageously be used, preferably three arranged symmetrically, in order to avoid as much as possible the formation of burrs.
The pressure can also be carried out very simply by means of an ordinary press having an upper member and a lower member, an operation which it will be advisable to follow by deburring the grinding wheel of any burr that this operation could have created on the joints.
These can also be constructed, moreover, so that the material protruding as a result of the opera-
