<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
1 - Une augmentation directe de la pression dans le con- duit d'aspiration du dôme de vapeur, par exemple à l'aide d'un éjecteur;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
Ledit distributeur est construit suivant les mêmes principes que le distributeur de la figure 6, mais il s'adapte pour être monté entre les deux brides voir figure 5. Le bout inférieur du conduit de descente 2 (figu- re 5) dans la réalisation illustrée ici est recourbé en une par- tie finale horizontale avant son entrée dans la pompe de circula- tion;
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Method and means for cooling liquids in downcomers.
In practice steam boilers are frequently subject to. variable steam production within very wide limits. Consumption can vary within wide limits; while on the contrary the combustion can be kept more or less constant, in accordance with the average consumption of the steam. The difference between the available quantity of steam and the heating intensity will be the most marked, if the boiler is operated in such a way as to allow the withdrawal of a maximum quantity of steam, starting from the state of rest, for cope with an instantaneous demand, for example to start a turbine which starts automatically.
By withdrawing steam, the quantity of heat of which exceeds the momentary intensity of heating, a certain part of the heat will therefore be withdrawn to the detriment of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the heating capacity of the boiler, which will lead to this result that the pressure of the boiler will drop. If the rate of pressure drop is too rapid, some spontaneous vaporization could result, also in the downspouts.
For this reason, it was considered impossible to achieve a variable consumption of steam in the type described above, with the hinges with water tubes and forced circulation, because it was considered that the obstructions to the cir - culation, such as the formation of steam in the pumps or in their suction openings will present too great a danger. However, a more in-depth study of the circulation conditions in the water tube boilers; with the varying consumption of steam, shows that circulation disturbances can be avoided.
In order to avoid disturbances in the operation of the circulation pump, the liquid in the suction pipe of the pump, considered from the point of view of the flow of fluids, must not contain vapor bubbles, c that is to say, this liquid must be homogeneous. In addition, the pressure of the liquid could be somewhat higher than that corresponding to the boiling point, i.e. the liquid could be cooled somewhat, in order to avoid the risk of vapor formation (from cavitation) to the pump blades.
This state of equilibrium means that the stabic pressure at the inlet of the pump must be greater than the sum of the losses by blowdown, flow loss at the inlet, loss due to overpressure. (above the boiling point), which depends on the construction of the pump and the pressure loss experienced by the liquid particle on its way through the downcomer and which in turn is a function of of the maximum decrease. permissible boiler pressure.
In the event of variable withdrawals of steam according to the above-mentioned operating mode, the static column can
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
become insufficient on its own to compensate for these losses. Likewise, the losses due to friction and losses at the inlet cannot be reduced by increasing the section of the descent duct, since the velocity of the liquid particles will decrease, which will have the effect that the liquid particle will over time. , in its way through the downcomer, to be exposed to the gradual drop in pressure - The determination of the dimensions is only a minimum function of the characteristics of the boiler and the liquid, so that we will arrive at a limit beyond which construction will become impracticable.
A solution can, however, be found by applying a compensating pressure in addition to the static column, and it can, for example, be achieved in the following two ways:
1 - A direct increase in the pressure in the suction duct of the steam dome, for example using an ejector;
2 - A lowering of the water temperature, preferably already in the suction duct of said dome.
It has been proposed previously to provide the pressure compensation according to alternative 2 by bringing the feed water into the dome in the immediate vicinity of the suction ducts. But this is not entirely rational, since vigorous withdrawal of the steam causes the water level to rise, so that the direct supply of feed water is completely just at the moment of more critical. The arrangement of an additional direct duct as a bypass for the control. Feeding water would cause very great complications in the operation, and for this reason such an alternative would present drawbacks.
In addition, practical experiments have shown that deposits of the feed water can be preciptied in the pumps and in the level indicators, if one allows to enter
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
feed water directly into the circulation cycle without a proper stay in the dome.
Another alternative would be to sacrifice some of the efficiency of the circulation pump by taking a bypass on the discharge side of the pump and running it somewhere back at some point in the downcomer. If the return flow is cooled by a suitable number of degrees and is introduced by an ejector, quite sufficient pressure compensation can be obtained.
A more in-depth study of the rate of said compensation will show that the height of the static column can also be advantageously compensated, in order to save the piping and thus to obtain a more appropriate arrangement of the pumps. to give a drop height of about 5 meters, but the calculation cited as an example shows that the pressure compensation, even if the section of the suction duct is determined in the most suitable way, will , increase as we increase the. drop height. It is obvious that the static column can be advantageously compensated even in cases where the variable consumption of steam is not expected.
Ultimately, the above process made it possible to place the circulation pump immediately below the steam dome and this independently of the inlet pressure required by the pump. The calculation shown in the diagram of FIG. 1 shows that the necessary pressure compensation is two times less than that which would be required with the usual device. Figures 2 and 3 give the example of the drop height difference. In the figures, 1 denotes the steam dome, 2 denotes the downcomer and 3 denotes the circulation pump.
The other parts of the boiler are not shown, then. that the figures are only intended to indicate the difference between
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
heights of fall in both cases. You can always insert a stabilizer, which is why it is important to recover the heat released during cooling. This heat can be absorbed either by the feed water, in place of the amount of steam normally supplied to the feed water for degassing, or absorbed in the heater for the combustion air. A third solution would be to terminate the return pipe either in the steam dome, in the immediate vicinity of the suction pipe, for example according to figure 5 of Swedish patent application no.527 / 45, or directly in the downspout.
But it would be the most natural to make terminate the bypass current, animated, -, of a higher speed, in the principal current and in the same direction as this last, thus causing an increase in the pressure by the ejector effect.
It can be observed quite generally that the circulation in water tube boilers can be kept completely stable, whatever the pressure drop during their operation, if one causes a certain pressure compensation in the down pipes of the steam boiler. It is preferable to achieve pressure compensation in forced circulation boilers by sacrificing a small part of the pump capacity by some cooling, but recovering the heat left during cooling.
The present invention which is based on the considerations set out above relates to a method and means of preventing the formation of steam in the downcomers in question, preferably by some cooling of the water. circulation and subjecting this water to the ejector effect.
This invention is explained by the description which follows and, apart from Figures 1 to 3 already mentioned, by Figures 4 to 10 of the accompanying drawings.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Figure 4 shows an assembly diagram of a device, according to the invention, for cooling the circulating water in the down pipes of a water tube boiler, which device realizes the condition allowing the boiler to boil almost any steam draw.
FIG. 5 represents the same device, but in a more detailed embodiment.
Figures 6 and 7 show on a larger scale two cross-sections at right angles of a detail of the same device and Figures 8 and 9 give another similar detail.
Figure 10 shows, on another scale, another variation. you of the detail given in Figures 6 and 7.
In the drawings 1 denotes the steam dome of a water-tube boiler and 2 denotes the descent duct terminating at its lower end at the suction inlet of the circulation pump 3. 5 denotes the bypass taken from discharge side of circulation pump 3 and passing through a refrigerant (heat exchanger). 6 which can be constituted by a special container (figure 4) provided with an additional coil 7 for the liquid or gas or by the supply water tank (figure 5). The coils 8a and 8b are connected in parallel and are each provided with an adjusting or closing member 8c and 8d respectively or other appropriate members making it possible to vary within the desired limits the quantity of liquid circulating in the refrigerant 6.
The coil 8 of FIG. 4 and the coils 8a and 8b of FIG. 5 respectively continue in the conduit 9 and open, passing through a throttle valve 10, or directly into the cold water distributor 11, described below. afterwards (figure 4), mounted on the downcomer 2 at a certain distance below the steam dome 1, or continue in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
duct 9 branching off at 9a and 9b (figure 5) which communicate via throttle valves 10 and 10a, on the one hand, with the cold water distributor 11, already mentioned, and on the other hand with another distributor 12 of cold water, of a type which will be described in more detail below and which is mounted on the lower end of the downcomer 2 on the suction side of the circulation pump 3.
A return valve 13 (figure 4) is interposed between the circulation pump 3 and the base of the riser pipe 4.
The construction of the cold water dispenser 11 above is shown in Figures 5 and 7 which respectively give a vertical section and a horizontal section of the cold water dispenser. The descent pipe 2 is surrounded by an annular chamber 14, of which the pipes 9 (figure 4) or 9a (figure-5) constitute the inlet orifice for the circulation water cooled in the refrigerant. 6.
At this point, the chamber 14 communicates freely with the interior of the downcomer 2, with the aid of oblique slots arranged in the walls of the conduit 2, so that the cooled circulation water arriving in the chamber 11 is distributed in the downcomer, thus causing the cooling of the water flowing in the downcomer 2 and preventing the vaporization of this water in the event of a possible drop in pressure in the boiler - re.
If you want to use a cooling substance which must not be mixed with the water from the downcomer, for example the supply water, the slots 15 will be omitted, but instead of these the distributor will be fitted. an outlet pipe 23. This device can be, for example, such as a return current, which can always be provided on the discharge side of the supply pump, or be conducted through the cooling tank and brought it back into the feed water tank-
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
Another embodiment of the cold water dispenser mentioned above is shown in Figures 8 and 9 which show said cold water dispenser in vertical section and in cross section respectively.
Said distributor is constructed according to the same principles as the distributor of figure 6, but it adapts to be mounted between the two flanges see figure 5. The lower end of the downcomer 2 (figure 5) in the illustrated embodiment here is curved into a final horizontal part before it enters the circulation pump;
the bypass 9b enters the annular chamber 16 in the vertical section and surrounding said horizontal end of the downpipe 2. The annular space 16 communicates with the inside of the downpipe 2 by means of oblique slots 17 made in the walls of the downpipe 2 so that the cooled circulation water flows before the circulation pump into the hot water coming from the boiler and arriving through the lower part of the downpipe 2, in order to obtain additional insurance against the formation of steam in the downcomer 2, in the event of a relatively sharp drop in the pressure in the boiler.
Fig. 10 shows in section a modified form of the cold water dispenser described above and placed below the dome. Instead of the aforementioned distributor, a distributor 18 is arranged at the entrance of the downcomer, that is to say around and together with the suction funnel 19 (figure 10) of the dome 1. Said distributor is provided with an annular chamber 18a and a slit 18b. The slightly cooled circulation water supplied by the conduits 9 and 9a respectively is directed, through the dome, to the annular chamber 18a.
A socket for the thermometer 20 (figure 5) is arranged at a suitable point in the downcomer 2, and another socket for the thermometer 21 in the pipe 9 for the control.

the temperature of the circulation water and the temperature of the cooled part of the circulation water passing through the conduit 9 on its way back to the downcomer. The conduit 5 is provided with a flanged indicator glass 22 ′ for the control of the water flow.
The devices provided according to the present invention and described above make it possible to obtain a suitable increase in the pressure in the descent pipe in relation to the boiling point of water in this pipe, so as to obtain such a stabilization of the pressure. circulation, that the strongly variable withdrawals of the steam will not be able to compromise the safety of the operation. The increase in pressure necessary for stabilization must always be maintained, which in no way entails a loss worthy of mention, since the heat left for cooling is recovered and the bypass stream is only about 1% of the volume of the main stream of water.
The magnitude of the branch current is regulated by the throttle member 10 which can be placed at any point of the branches 5 and 9. The throttle member can be adjustable or it can be adjusted. may consist of a throttle disc or the like calibrated once and for all and which is such that the amount of bypass water is determined in relation to the appropriate increase in pressure.
The pressure compensation preferably relates to the circulation water in the down pipes of the boilers with forced water circulation.
This does not of course exclude that the circulation cycle can also be stabilized by application of the above method even in the case of boilers with natural water circulation. However, in this case the most natural solution would be to introduce cpurants derived from feed water.

in the upper part of the downspouts, as shown in figure 10. The resulting disadvantages are partially eliminated due to the fact that in this case there is no circulation pump which is most sensitive to sediment deposits .
