<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
La nouvelle transmission peut en outre présenter les caractéristiques suivantes considérées isolément ou en toutes combinaisons: la pompe est du type multiple; lorsque la pompe est du type à engrenages multiples, elle comprendun pignon central disposé suivant l'axe géomé- trique de la transmission tandis que les autres pignons sont répartis autour du dit pignon central; le corps de pompe estun corps de révolution (cylin-- drique par exemple), la cavité dans laquelle débouchent les conduits d'aspiration et de refoulement étant de forme annu- laire; le corps de pompe comprend des bouchons de remplissage régulièrement répartis sur sa périphérie; le corps de pompe comprend des ailettes périphériques de refroidissement; la chambre de circulation communique avec une chambre de dilatation;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
, Cette: variante de .réalisation est encore remarquable par les points suivants:' les pignons. d'entraînement des,pompes élémentaires .sont disposés sur. une circonférence dont le centre,'est dans l'axe des arbres menants et menés'; les .pignons d'entraînement des .pompes, élémentaires, dont les corps ou.carters-sont solidaires d'un des arbres de la transmission, sont on ,prise avec une roue dentée de diamètre sensiblement plus -grand que .celui des dits. ,pignons ét calée sur l'autre arbre de la transmission;
des moyens de ¯crabotage permettent de solidariser, en rotation,'les deux éléments du 'dispositif d'accouplement, c'est à dire de solidariser 'lès deux, parties de-la transmission dans laquelle' est', monté le dispositif d'accouplement'en question; , la 'roue dentée mentionnée ci-dessus présente une den- tùre auxiliaire susceptible de venir en prise'avec une denture solidaire de l'ensemble' des corps de pompe',' et cette roue est montée coulissante.'sur son-arbre;
les' engrenages constitués.par la roue dentée et les ' pignons d'entraînement susvisés sont droits ou coniques'suivant que .-les axes' des pompes 'sont parallèles ou perpendiculaires à .l'axe des arbres de la transmission ou encore inclines'sur , -cet axe; .un mesureur .de couple ou un dispositif analogue commande 'le crabotage et '(ou) le 'décrabotage des deux arbres-de ,la trans- mission;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
les pompes et (ou) le liquide qui y circule sont re- froidis par un liquide de refroidissement; passant dans un re- froidisseur à ailettes qui participe à la rotation de l'ensem- ble carters des pompes élémentaires;
l'ensemble du dispositif peut tourner dans un carter fixe -muni de joints tournants étanches pour le passage des ar- bres de la transmission, lequel carter est traversé par un courant de liquide 'de refroidissement; pour permettre la réversibilité de fonctionnement du dispositif d'accouplement hydraulique progressif, chaque pompe peut comporter un double système de canaux de circulation dont un groupe est muni de clapets anti-retour; les canaux d'admission et (ou) de refoulement peuvent comporter, soit des obturateurs réglables en marche, soit des dispositifs d'étranglement amovibles établis sous la forme'de gicleurs interchangeables; les obturateurs peuvent être à commande automatique et peuvent notamment être actionnés par des moyens sensibles à la force centrifuge;
. le crabotage entre les éléments menant etmené du dispositif d'accouplement peut être semi-automatique, c'est à dire commandé par la pression de refoulement .d'une ou de plu- sieurs pompes élémentaires, le décrabotage étant commandé ar- bitrairement;

l'embrayage du groupe moteur peut comporter des moyens d'accouplement positifs tels que des moyens de crabotage asser- vis ou non au dispositif ralentisseur ou au dispositif d'ac- couplement du dispositif ralentisseur;
Pour cette application particulière du dispositif, celui-ci est encore remarquable par les points suivants et leurs combinaisons: le pignon menant de la pompe de freinage est monté fou sur un arbre solidaire, en rotation, du vilebrequin du moteur, arbre auquel ledit pignon peut être accouplé par l'intermédiaire d'un dispositif d'accouplement approprié: l'admission et le refoulement de la pompe de freinage sont reliés à un radiateur de refroidissement; la pompe de freinage est disposée dans un carter à double paroi, dont la cavité délimitée par les deux parois est traversée par un liquide de refroidissement tel que de l'eau; dans le carter à double paroi est disposée une pompe de circulation pour le liquide de refroidissement;

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>
<Desc/Clms Page number 16>
motrices.
<Desc/Clms Page number 17>

"Progressive hydraulic coupling device", The present invention relates to a progressive hydraulic coupling device, remarkable in particular in that it consists of a positive-displacement pump of the appropriate type, one of which is of the elements (the usual stator or the moving part) is integral with one of the members of a transmission (driving part or driven part) and of which the other element (moving part or usual stator) is integral with the other, transmission member (driven part or driving part), adjustable shutters being interposed in the pump delivery duct (s),
ducts which debauchery in a cavity of
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
à'aspiration circulation-.from. the conduit (s) / from said pump leave.
In an advantageous embodiment, the volume pump consists of a gear pump, one of the pins of which is integral with one of the transmission components (driving shaft or driven shaft, for example) and of which the drive body. The pump is integral with the other member of said transmission (driven shaft or driving shaft for example), the delivery duct (s) opening out into a circulation cavity formed in the pump body itself.
The new transmission can also have the following characteristics considered in isolation or in any combination: the pump is of the multiple type; when the pump is of the multiple gear type, it comprisesa central pinion arranged along the geometric axis of the transmission while the other pinions are distributed around said central pinion; the pump body is a body of revolution (cylindrical for example), the cavity into which the suction and delivery conduits open out being annular in shape; the pump body comprises filler caps regularly distributed over its periphery; the pump body comprises peripheral cooling fins; the circulation chamber communicates with an expansion chamber;
In another advantageous embodiment of the invention, one. of the elements of the device is constituted by the bodies of a plurality of single or multicellular elementary positive displacement pumps, although the other element of the device consists of a speed multiplier driving the driving member of each of the elementary pumps in question.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Thanks to the fact that the torque transmission is effected by means of several pumps, rotating at an overdrive speed in relation to the speed, of rotation of the transmission members, each of the so-called 'pumps n' assumes the transmission of a low torque. This allows ..to reduce, the .dimensions..of .elementary .pumps and, consequently, to reduce the dimensions of the assembly.
This: variant of. Realization is still remarkable by the following points: 'the pinions. drive, elementary pumps. are arranged on. a circumference whose center, 'is in the axis of the driving and driven shafts'; the .pumps drive pinions, elementary, whose bodies or.carters-are integral with one of the transmission shafts, are taken with a toothed wheel of diameter significantly larger than .celui said. , gears are wedged on the other transmission shaft;
¯ clutch means make it possible to join, in rotation, 'the two elements of the' coupling device, that is to say to join 'the two parts of the transmission in which' is 'mounted the device of' mating in question; , the 'toothed wheel mentioned above has an auxiliary toothing capable of engaging' with a toothing integral with the assembly 'of the pump bodies',' and this wheel is slidably mounted on its shaft;
the 'gears constituted by the toothed wheel and the' aforementioned drive pinions are straight or conical 'depending on whether the axes' of the pumps 'are parallel or perpendicular to the axis of the transmission shafts or even inclined' on, -this axis; .a torque meter or a similar device controls the clutch engagement and (or) the declutching of the two drive shafts;
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the pumps and / or the liquid circulating therein are cooled by a coolant; passing through a finned cooler which participates in the rotation of the unit casings of the elementary pumps;
the whole of the device can rotate in a fixed casing provided with sealed rotary joints for the passage of the transmission shafts, which casing is traversed by a stream of cooling liquid; to allow the reversibility of operation of the progressive hydraulic coupling device, each pump can include a double system of circulation channels, one group of which is provided with non-return valves; the inlet and (or) delivery channels may comprise either shutters which can be adjusted in operation, or removable throttling devices established in the form of interchangeable nozzles; the shutters can be automatically controlled and can in particular be actuated by means sensitive to centrifugal force;
. the clutch engagement between the driving and driven elements of the coupling device can be semi-automatic, that is to say controlled by the delivery pressure of one or more elementary pumps, the clutch engagement being controlled arbitrarily;
in the case of the clutch mentioned above, one of the shafts of the transmission carries a sliding pinion which, under the action of elastic means, engages with a toothed ring integral with the other shaft of the transmission, the sliding pinion being held in the declutching position by a pivoting lever engaged with a locking pawl subjected, on the one hand, to the action of an adjustable antagonist force (for release) and , on the other hand, to the action of a piston on one of the faces of which the delivery pressure of an elementary pump is exerted.

Among the many applications of the aforementioned coupling device, it is particularly appropriate to mention that of a retarder for motor vehicles.
EMI6.1
, We know '. That, in a motor vehicle, for example, it is customary to use the engine as a brake, when slowing down the vehicle, during a descent, etc. this braking is insufficient even with the gearbox in first position.
It has therefore been imagined to insert, in the transmission going: from the gearbox to the driving wheels, a retarding device consisting of a mechanical brake, electromagnetic, etc., but the location chosen for this device retarder has a big incon--
EMI6.2
comes, .resulting from the fact that the torque, slowing down can reach high values, which obliges, to give the device, the retarder of -important dimensions.
The present 'invention obviates the drawback'
EMI6.3
mentioned-dess.s, has the obje't a remarkable slowdown system, in particular, by the fact that'le retarder device itself is disposed upstream. from the box 'of'

speeds or on the latter... that is to say at a point of the.
. transmission where the rotating members are driven at the highest speed.
'This provision -of. the retarding member enables it to be produced in the form of a device of relatively small dimensions, given that the retarding torque at

to absorb is much weaker than it is the case in the., provision, known which one spoke above, above.
The new retardation system is - .. again remarkable for ', the following characteristics and their combinations: the retarder device', which. maybe from a guy

the device (retarder is connected to the crankshaft of the engine by a coupling device such as a clutch or a dog clutch; the retarder device can be placed between the clutch and the gearbox; the retarder device can be placed on or 'in the gearbox and be driven by a power take-off or by a pinion of said gearbox, preferably a pinion permanently coupled to the transmission going to the driving wheels of the vehicle; the retarder device may be driven by means of a speed multiplier;
the clutch of the power unit may include positive coupling means such as clutch means, whether or not attached to the retarder device or to the coupling device of the retarder device;
The hydraulic coupling device is then advantageously arranged so that the stator of the pump is stationary, the rotor being driven in the manner described above.
For this particular application of the device, it is still remarkable for the following points and their combinations: the driving pinion of the brake pump is mounted idle on a shaft integral, in rotation, with the crankshaft of the engine, the shaft to which said pinion can be coupled by means of a suitable coupling device: the inlet and outlet of the brake pump are connected to a cooling radiator; the brake pump is arranged in a double-walled casing, the cavity delimited by the two walls of which is traversed by a cooling liquid such as water; in the double-walled casing there is a circulation pump for the coolant;

In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIGS.
1, 2 and 3, the new progressive hydraulic coupling device comprises a pump body or casing 1 integral with the transmission shaft 2 and formed of several assembled parts 1 ', 1 ", 1"' of shape, circular and arranged to delimit an annular circulation chamber 3 and the housings of the pump gears which, in this example, are three in number, namely: a central gear 4 integral with the shaft 5 of the transmission andtwo radial pinions 6 and 7 in mesh with pinion 4.
In the pump body are formed the inlet conduits 8 and 9 and the delivery conduits 10 and 11 (the pins
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
4, 6 and 7 are supposed to turn in the direction indicated by the arrows). ''
In the delivery conduits 10 and 11 are arranged .des, shutters. 12 and 13 respectively, which shutters are assumed to be here. of the 'type' with rotary key whose 'two control axes 14, and, 15 open out.' of the body 1.
The control axes 14 and 15 respectively carry fingers 16 and 17 co-operating with a control cone 18 sliding on the shaft 2 and operated, for example; by 'means of a fork' not shown in the drawing.
The body. pump 1 further comprises-, distributed over its' periphery, filler plugs 19 and cooling fins 20.
The new progressive hydraulic coupling device (supposed to be filled with a suitable. Liquid, such as oil) operates, as follows: 'when the shutters 12' and 15 are open (control fingers 16 and 17 in the position in solid lines of ', fig. 3) and' that the shaft 5 is turned in the direction of the arrow ,, the multiple pump (4,6, 7) debits in. short-circuit, via the circulation chamber 3.
(The direction of circulation is. Represented by the arrows in fig. 1) When, on the contrary, the shutters 12 and 13 are closed (control fingers 1'6 and 17 brought in, by the sliding of the cone 18 , in the position shown in dotted lines in fig. 3), the pump can no longer deliver and the gears
4, 6 and 7 can no longer rotate (or at least can only rotate to a very small extent owing to the passage of the liquid in, the intervals formed by the necessary mechanical games of the organs).
At this time, the pinions 6 and
7 behave like blocked satellites driving their satellite carrier, in this case the pump body 1 ', with the shaft
2, considered here as a driven shaft. This shaft turns (at
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
slip due to the passage of the liquid in the clearances of the pump mechanism) at a speed approximately equal to that of the shaft 5.
Between the zero speed of the driven shaft 2 and its maximum speed (close to that of the shaft 5), we can obviously obtain all the intermediate speeds depending on the degree of closure of the shutters 12 and 13, the heat released ( in particular during the more or less large falsification of the driven group of members) being discharged by the cooling fins 20.
The new device, the efficiency of which is very high and which exhibits great flexibility as well as a wide range of progressive drive progressiveness, is capable of numerous applications, among which it is worth mentioning (without limitation): use of the hydraulic clutch retort, as a hydraulic brake, as a hydraulic retarder for cranes, cable cars, heavy vehicles, etc ...
It should be noted that the functions of shafts 2 and 5 (with the organs associated with them) can be reversed.
Otherwise,. the shutters (which may be of a different type from that shown) can be ordered. by means of a planetary gear mechanism of the kind used, for example, for controlling the pitch of variable-pitch propellers.
In the variant embodiment of Figs. 4 and 5, the progressive hydraulic coupling device comprises a finned casing 21 secured to the shaft 22 of the transmission, which casing is closed by a flange or cover 23 in it. - which penetrates the other shaft 24 of said transmission.
In the main casing 21 are fixed the casings or bodies 25 of the elementary pumps P1, P2, etc ... which are here of the single gear type 26,27.
The pinion; drive 28 of each elementary pump
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
P is engaged with a toothed wheel 29 slidably keyed on the shaft 24. This wheel carries an auxiliary toothing 29a which can engage (in view of the clutching of the casing 21 with the said toothed wheel, that is to say for the 'interconnection of, shafts 22 and 24)' with a ring gear 30 fixed to the flange 23.
'-The shaft 24, centered by bearings Si'et 32, has a hollow end 24a and the wheel 29 can slide on said shaft by means of a groove-spline system 33.
. The 'Control, in translation, of the wheel. 89 is provided by a pin 34 engaged in the hub 29b of the wheel, freely passing through openings. 35 of the hollow end 24a of the shaft 24 and engaged in a piston. 36 sliding in the housing 24a.
The piston is connected, by means of thrust bearings, 37, to a threaded end 38 of a control rod.
39 passing through an axial housing of the shaft 88 'and being able to execute, under the action of an external control, not shown in the drawing, an axial movement.
In the inlet 40 and discharge 41 ducts there are threaded plugs with calibrated orifices or: interchangeable nozzles 42 and 43 respectively allowing the adjustment of the 'flow rate of each elementary pump' and, consequently, the adjustment of the 'drive torque of the coupling device, which jets open into the circulation pipe 44.'
For starting, the various organs are in the position shown in fig.4.
When the speed of the driven shaft (24 for example) has aligned (except for sliding) with that of the driving shaft (22 for example), it suffices to move the control rod
39 towards the right, which moves the toothed wheel and causes the teeth 29a and 30 to engage. The shafts 22 and 24 are thus positively coupled (without sliding).
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
In the embodiment shown in fig.6 on which is designated by 45 the driving shaft, by 46 the driven shaft, -car 47 the housing of the coupling device, by 48 one of. elementary pumps with its pinion 49 and by 50 a toothed wheel wedged on the driven shaft 46, and in engagement with the pinion 49, the clutch between the driving and driven elements is provided by a toothed ring 51 integral with the housing 47 and by an auxiliary toothed wheel 52 sliding on the shaft 46 and able to come into engagement with the crown 51 under the action of a spring 53 bearing, from a park, on the housing 47 and , on the other hand, on a ball bearing 54 integral with the hub 52a of the wheel 52.
One end of a lever 55, pivoting at 56 on the housing, is engaged in a groove 52b of the hub 52, the other end of this lever cooperating with a locking pawl
57 which pivots at 58, on the casing 47.
The free end of the pawl 57 is subjected, on the one hand, to the elastic action of a pusher 59 integral with a ring 59a on which rests one end of a spring 60, the other end of which rests on a piston 61 adjustable by a screw 62 and, on the other hand, by the action of a rod 65 in contact with a piston 64 sliding in a cylinder 65 into which opens a bypass 66 of the delivery pipe 67 of the pump 48 , an adjustment member 68 being interposed in the aforementioned duct ', which opens into the circulation cavity 69.
On start-up, the spring 53 is compressed by the user (by means of a mechanical or other device, not shown in the drawing) and the members are in the position of FIG. 6, the position in which they are held. by the discharge pressure of the pump 48, which pressure is exerted on the piston 64 and which therefore maintains the pawl.
57 engaged with lever 55.
From the moment when the speed of rotation of the shaft
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
driven 46 aligns (up to the slip) on that of shaft 45, the discharge pressure decreases; the action of the spring 60 (which can be calibrated to the desired value) can then be exerted. on the pawl 57 'against the action exerted by the piston 64 (the delivery pressure being on its side adjustable,' -, thanks to the adjustment member 68). The pawl then swings in the reverse direction of clockwise and releases the lever 55.
The assembly 52, 52a, 54 ,, being no longer maintained in the 'axial direction, the spring 53 pushes this assembly to the left \ to cause the engagement of the auxiliary toothed wheel.
52 with. the ring gear 51 ', in other words the positive coupling between the shafts. 45 -and 46.
The cooling of the coupling device can be improved by circulation or by a bath of cooling liquid.
'In' the example of fig. 7 the coupling device
A is housed in a stationary housing 70. From which the shafts emerge, driving and driven a and b passing through sealed rotary joints
70a, 70b. The .carter 70 is traversed by any suitable coolant stream which, in turn, can be cooled in a cooling device such as a radiator.
In the variant 'of FIG. 8, the cooling liquid is contained in a casing 71 provided with fins' 72 and attached to the casing of the coupling device A so as to participate in its rotation.
The shafts of the food pumps, instead of being parallel to the axis of the transmission organs (shafts), could be perpendicular to this axis, as can be seen in fig. 9 on which is designated by p an elementary pump with its drive bevel gear 73-meshing with a bevel gear 74.
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
On le'8 fig.10 to 13, there is designated by 101 a combustion engine with its crankshaft 102, by 103 the clutch, by 104 the gearbox and by 105 the shaft going to the driving wheels of a vehicle. ,
In the example of fig. 10, the retarder device 106 is mounted at the end of the crankshaft 102, at the front of the engine 101:
This retarding device may be of any suitable type, for example a hydraulic device consisting of a gear pump 107 (see fip.14) working in a closed circuit and on the suction of which a shutter be placed. controlled by the driver
When the shutter is closed, the pump 107 operates empty and exerts no braking action (or at most negligible braking action). When the shutter is open, the pump delivers and its braking action is then a function of the section of the discharge.
In an advantageous embodiment, the retarder device can be produced from. manner indicated below and shown in FIGS. 15 and 16.
As can be seen in FIG. 11, it is possible to interpose, between the crankshaft of the engine and the retarder device, a coupling device 108 ′ which can be a clutch or a clutch.
In the variant of the. fig.12, the slowdown device '106 is disposed at the other end of the engine' 101, interposed between said engine and clutch 105.
Finally, in the variant shown in FIG. 13, the retarder device 106 is interposed between the clutch 103 and the gearbox 104.
As can be seen, the retarder device 106 is always placed upstream of the gearbox 104, that is to say in the transmission part rotating at a speed equal to or greater than that of the transmission part (shaft 105 ) arranged between the gearbox and the wheels
<Desc / Clms Page number 16>
motor.
Except in the case where the retarder device is downstream of the clutch-105 (fig. 3), it may be advantageous to complete the retardation system by a mechanism of 'carbotage of said clutch so that this member of transmission can transmit a torque greater than the maximum torque normally permitted.
When the retarder device is intended more particularly to be mounted on the nose of the engine, it can advantageously be produced in the manner indicated in Figs. 15 and 16.
In this embodiment, the device comprises a gear pump constituted by a driving pinion 108 meshing with a driven pinion 109, the bearing surfaces of the two pinions '108 and' '109 being supported by bearings 110, 110' and 111, 111 '.respectively supported' by a casing 112, 112a, 112b with double wall.
Pinion 108 is 'mounted loose on' a shaft 113 connected to the crankshaft 102 of the engine, by a suitable coupling 114.
On the end of the front bearing of the pinion 10.8 is. wedged a pinion 115 able to come into engagement with a keyed pinion 116 sliding on the shaft 113, the translational movement of said pinion-116 (for its coupling or its uncoupling with the 'pinion 115) being controlled by a fork operated by a lever 117.
The driven pinion 109 and its two seats are hollow and inside the pinion body is a helical device 118 for the propulsion of the coolant.
The hollow spans of gable 109 communicate with two chambers
119, 120 delimited by the double wall of the casing 112, 112a, 112b, these two chambers' comprising suction 121 and discharge 122 pipes respectively, which pipes are connected to a radiator 123. The cooling is, de.plus,
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
reinforced by fins 112c carried by the housing part 112b.
Finally, with a view to cooling the liquid passing through the brake pump, the inlet and outlet of this pump are connected by conduits 124 and 125 to a radiator. 126.
To put the retarder device into service, it suffices, using the operating lever, 117, to couple the pinion 116 with the pinion 115.
At this moment, the pump constituted by the planons driving 108 and driven 109 is driven - because the crankshaft 102 of the engine, which causes the circulation of the brake fluid to sleep the flow (and therefore the braking of the pump) can be adjusted by an appropriate shutter (not shown in the drawing) - arranged on the discharge and controlled by a lever 127.
Simultaneously, the driven pinion 109 causes the. circulation of the cooling liquid in which the internal part of the device housing bathes.
In a variant, the coupling 115-116 can be omitted and the pinion 108 can be wedged directly on the shaft 113. In this case, to check the device, it suffices to insert, on the inlet of the cylinder. pump consisting of the onions 108 and 109, a shutter controlled from the outside.
When the shutter in question is closed, the pump runs at no load and the braking is minimum, while, when the shutter is open, the pump delivers through a calibrated discharge hole and the braking deviates maximum, the values Intermediate braking which can be obtained by intermediate positions of said shutter. It is obvious that the exemplary embodiments of the device. Coupling tif described above and shown in the accompanying drawings have been given only as an indication and not limiting and that any modification of detail can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
