L'invention
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
REVENDICATIONS.

"Improvements to the joining processes of metals and metal alloys".
The present invention relates to improvements in methods of joining metals by forging or rolling to produce composite articles, for example by joining a relatively expensive special steel surface and a support of expensive iron or steel. lesser.
However, the invention also relates to the joining of non-ferrous metals to each other or to ferrous metals. The invention
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
is particularly applicable to the covering of mild steel sheets with stainless steel or high thermal resistance.
The invention applies inter alia to the production of various composite metal articles such as for example sheets, bars and profiles, rolled or forged.
During the production of composite articles based on special steels or steels of different compositions, joined together by hot rolling or by forging, one of the main difficulties lies in the realization of a connection or zone of completely effective and continuous interpenetration between the metals to be joined. For example, in the case of special steels such as these stainless or high thermal resistance steels, the presence of a surface film generally considered to be an oxide and which is present even on apparently clean surfaces, is the cause of this difficulty.
Methods have already been recommended for obtaining effective bonding between parts of steel or steel alloys. For example, there is a process for electrolytically depositing a layer of iron on the metal in question, after having duly cleaned the surface of the latter.
In accordance with the present invention, a method of joining metals and metal alloys is carried out, consisting essentially in coating, by welding, a layer of steel on the surface of the first metal and then in joining this layer of the first metal to the second metal. , by hot rolling or by forging.
Although the steel deposited by welding on the metal is preferably mild steel, the term "steel" in the following description and claims can also be applied to any other steel or steel-based alloy. .
The Applicants have experimentally found that the film
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
superficial, although preventing effective joining by forging, however allows the welding of these metals by the usual arc or torch processes.
According to a preferred method of execution, a surface layer is first of all deposited on the first metal, for example the metal of the surface, then a second layer of steel sheets is welded on said first layer, and the first The metal thus treated is rolled or forged until its dimensions are sufficiently reduced, after which it is secured to the second metal, for example the support, by hot rolling or by forging.
According to a variant, the second metal receives before its joining to the first, a welded steel layer, the joining of the first metal to the second being effective between the two surface layers of steel in contact after hot rolling or forging.
As regards the first metal, the present invention applies to any metal to which a surface layer of steel can be welded, with or without subsequent application of steel sheets as has been stated, and as to the second metal, the invention relates to any metal capable of receiving by welding a surface layer of steel, but also relates to any metal which can, by hot rolling or by forging, be secured to said surface layer of steel welded to the metal. first metal, this layer then having or not been covered with a second layer of steel sheets.
The Applicants have obtained satisfactory results by fixing the surface steel layer by welding with an electric arc or with a torch.
The invention can therefore be applied to the joining by forging or rolling, of metals such as nickel, the metal commercially known as "Monel" (registered trademark), or others.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
non-ferrous or ferrous metals, to which a steel layer @ can be welded as described above. It is obviously possible to join more than two metals together, for example by lining one or more surfaces of each metal to be joined to the whole, with an intermediate welded steel layer, except of course in the case where 1, metal itself is mild steel or a suitable alloy of steel.
It is known that coating by arc welding or torch welding a layer of mild steel over a large surface of special steel, for example, is a delicate and expensive process. To avoid this, the method according to the invention may consist in depositing said layer during an intermediate stage of production of the final metallic part, that is to say when the part - generally a sheet - must still undergo several rolling passes and is therefore only a semi-finished product. In this way, the final deformation is reduced to a minimum at the same time as the surface to be coated with steel is of further reduced dimensions.
Another reduction in the cost price results from the fact that a single surface layer of mild steel may suffice in this intermediate state of manufacture, the total necessary thickness of mild steel being obtained by superimposing on this welded layer a second layer which, by subsequent rolling or forging, will be easily secured to the lower layer of mild steel, after having flattened the latter by grinding.
To carry out this process, the Applicants preferably use mild steel sheets of reduced dimensions, for example 3 dm squares. side and whose surface in contact with the lower layer of steel is cleaned by sandblasting, pickling, or grinding. The thickness of these sheets can be chosen at will; these are placed next to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the other on the special steel (or equivalent) rolling semi-finished product covered with mild steel by welding, and so as to leave a suitable space between these sheets, this space being subsequently filled with welded mild steel, thus firmly anchoring each sheet to the lower layer of mild steel, the whole being finally flattened.
The relatively expensive steel semi-finished product, uniformly coated with mild steel on one of its surfaces, and made as described, is then hot rolled or forged to obtain a sheet metal. suitable thickness, generally 12 m / .m.
By these various operations, a steel alloy sheet is produced, one surface of which is uniformly lined with a relatively thin layer of mild steel, which makes it possible to economically obtain a suitable material for subsequent manufacture. Known methods of hot rolling or forging of sheets, bars or profiles, of a composite nature, constituted as according to the invention, by a relatively expensive steel alloy secured to a larger support of mild steel or any equivalent moderately priced.
By way of example, a method for carrying out the improved method according to the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, for the attachment of a layer of stainless steel to a base of mild steel.
In these drawings:
Figure 1 shows, in cross section, in elevation through axis 1-1 of Figure 2, a stainless steel semi-finished product lined with welded mild steel sheets.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the object of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross section in elevation showing the final method of securing a steel support.

soft to its stainless steel coating.
In these drawings a represents a coarse sheet of stainless steel in the semi-finished state, containing approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, measuring 1.45 m. over 0.90 m. and 0.15 m. thick, and one surface of which has been cleaned by sandblasting. On the entire unsanded surface a1, a layer of weld b to a single bead of mild steel 'of about 3 mm. thickness is deposited by the known method of electric arc welding using coated mild steel electrodes.
The welded mild steel layer is then flattened by grinding, then covered with a layer of mild steel sheets (Figures 1 and 2) each measuring approximately 0.28 m. over 0.25 m. and 12 mm. thick, and with loosened surfaces.
These sheets are arranged to leave between them spaces of about 12 mm. width which are then filled with mild steel weld deposited as in d to the upper level of the sheets.
This semi-finished product (hereinafter referred to as "sheet metal" semi-finished product) therefore has on a surface a mild steel coating with a total thickness of about 16 mm. thick.
The "sheet metal" semi-finished product is then reheated to 1150 C - 1180 C, and rolled in a sheet metal train until it is reduced to a 12 mm sheet. of about 11 m. over 1.37 m. one surface of which bears a layer of mild steel of approximately 0.66 mm. thick. The cost price of coating stainless steel sheets with a welded layer of bonding mild steel is thus considerably reduced since such a process provides, from a "sheet" semi-finished product of 1.32 m2, a 12 mm sheet. whose surface area is approximately 15.07 m2. It is still possible to further reduce this price by using a semi-finished product of greater thickness.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
From this 12 mm sheet. made of steel alloy are cut two squares of 0.76 m. side whose surfaces are cleaned by sandblasting and which are placed one on top of the other with their stainless surfaces a facing and their base c of mild steel outwards as in figure 3. A thin layer of material inert refractory (magnesia) is distributed uniformly between these two sheets in order to prevent them from joining. These two sheets of 12 mm. are then joined by welding using austenitic rods, and the whole is placed between two semi-finished mild steel f 75 mm. thickness, 0.9 m, by 0.9 m. with rough internal surface.
This double "sandwich" is sealed with weld seams of mild steel / weld along all four sides, as is customary to achieve a similar overlap on steel, leaving 12mm sheets all around. . a space of 3 mm. approximately allowing their differential expansion. This double "sandwich" thus prepared is reheated to 1150 C - 1180 C and rolled in a sheet metal train so as to present a final thickness of 38 mm. Immediately after rolling, the double sheet is annealed at 6500 C, after which the edges are sheared, resulting in two 18 mm mild steel sheets. about 2.44 m thick. over 0.91 m. approximately, one surface of which is made of stainless steel with a thickness of 3 mm. about.
Fatigue tests carried out on these sheets, and comprising tensile tests, cold bending, torsion, and micrographic examinations, have shown that effective interpenetration is thus carried out uniformly over the entire surface of the two sheets.
The Applicants have further found that the welded mild steel layer may in certain cases only have to reach a few microns in thickness.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
The present invention therefore provides a method which, while avoiding the re-use of relatively expensive electroplating plants, is easily achievable and produces a first quality coating on the base support.
Among other applications, the invention also extends to a large number of use cases of coated steels, as well as to composite armor such as those resistant to projectiles and those used for armor plates.
