APPAREILS A DECHARGE ELECTRONIQUE
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

ELECTRONIC DISCHARGE DEVICES
The present invention relates to electronic discharge devices intended for use as rectifiers.
One of the main objects of the invention is to obtain such an apparatus in a narrow and elongated form, enabling it to be held between clamping terminals, or the like.
Another object of the invention is to enable an apparatus of this form and of this type to withstand relatively high electrical power, with high efficiency.
Electronic discharge devices for use as rectifiers have heretofore been constructed by inserting a heated filament type anode and cathode into a casing containing a gas such as mercury vapor. It is often desirable that a rectifier of this type can withstand as high a current as possible and, since the current
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the current depends on the emission of electrons by the heated filament, expedients have been used to obtain as high a degree of electron emission as possible, for a given filament heating voltage. One such expedient previously proposed was to form the filament in the form of a ribbon having a number of closely spaced pleats, forming an accordion arrangement.
This arrangement has the advantage of providing a relatively large electron emitting surface in a small space, so that the heat exchange between the plies is facilitated, which contributes to the efficiency of the filament.
Conventionally constructed electronic discharge rectifiers containing such electrodes in their casing were of considerable size.
In accordance with certain features of the present invention, it is possible to obtain an electronic discharge apparatus of said type, of relatively small dimensions and of a suitable narrow shape, such as the cylindrical cartridge shape commonly used for them. fuses, with terminal elements at the ends, allowing mounting on clamping terminals. The invention may be accomplished by using an accordion-folded ribbon type filament, said filament extending a substantial length of the electron discharge tube; the wall of the tube is metallic and acts as an anode surrounding, in the immediate vicinity, the ribbon-shaped filamentary cathode. The ends of the tube are made of conductive material and serve as terminals for the filament.
Said ends are insulated from the anode using a suitable insulating material, such as glass. The anode connection is easily made by fixing a clamping strip to the metal wall forming an anode.
The invention will be better understood on reading the detailed description which follows and on examining the accompanying drawings which
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
represent, by way of nonlimiting example, an embodiment of said invention.
FIG. 1 is a profile, with partial section, of an electronic discharge device conforming to certain characteristics of the invention.
Figure 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
FIG. 3 represents the device of FIGS. 1 and 2 assembled using clamping terminals.
According to the figures, the electronic discharge apparatus comprises a metallic cylindrical member 10, which may be of stainless steel or kovar, or the like, forming a wall of the tube and constituting its anode. The ends of the cylinder are connected to end caps 11 and 12, which may be of a similar metal and constitute the ends of the tube or casing. Said terminal capsules are respectively isolated from the anode by the insulating sections 13 and 14, which may be of a suitable glassy substance. The sections of glass, or vitreous substance, 13 and 14, are sealed at the periphery of the metal elements 10, 11 and 12, at the respective junction points 15, 16, 17 and 18, in a well known manner, in a manner that the envelope can be emptied and then filled with gas if desired.
The terminal part 19 of the capsule 11 forms an unbroken end of the tube and the terminal part 20 of the capsule 12 comprises a central collar 21, through which passes a metal tube 22, having openings 23, opening to the left. 'inside the envelope and through which a vacuum can be created in said envelope. The tube 22 is held securely in the axis of the casing by suitable brazing on the collar 21, along the surface 24.
At the other end of the casing, a tubular element
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
metal 25 is fixed to the terminal element 19 of the capsule 11, in an axial position, inside the casing, by suitable brazing, along the surface 26. Elements 22 and 25 have suitable bores, or central openings 27 and 28, into the inner ends of which is inserted a rod 29 of insulating material, such as alumina or soapstone. The rod 29 acts as a support for a filament 30, which is in the form of a thin metallic ribbon, exhibiting a number of closely spaced folds and forming an accordion-like arrangement extending from the inner end of the tube. terminal 22 to the inner end of the terminal tube 25.
The tape may be of a suitable filament metal such as nickel, preferably coated with a substance which increases its electronic emission qualities when the filament is heated, such substance as barium or strontium oxide. .
Said filament is centered inside the casing, inside the cylindrical anode 10, which forms the side wall of said casing. To allow the support of the tape by the rod 29, each fold of said tape is provided, at a central point, with an opening large enough to allow the rod to pass: One of the ends 31 of the tape is fixed, for example by soldering , to a metal screen 32 which has the shape of a flat disc folded at its periphery into a rim 33, which increases its rigidity. The screen 32 is likewise provided with an opening similar to those of the folds of the ribbon, the rod 29 passing through said opening and the screen is fixed to the metallic tubular element 25, preferably by soldering at 34. A similar screen 35 is provided at the opposite end of the ribbon.
The end 36 of the tape is fixed to said screen 35, preferably by soldering; said screen is soldered in a similar manner at 37, at the end of metal tube 22.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
After fixing in the casing of the filamentary structure as described above, the casing can be evacuated, in a well-known manner, by placing a vacuum pump at the outer end. metal tube 22. After sufficient evacuation of the liquid, said tube is sealed at its outer end 38, in a well known manner, as shown in Fig. 1, and a suitable seal is established to prevent the entry of air into the tube. 'envelope. Gas can be introduced into the tube in any convenient way, either before or after the tube 22 is plugged. For example, if the device is to act as a mercury vapor rectifier, a droplet of mercury must be placed in the casing before it is discharged.
After evacuation and sealing of the envelope, as described above, a capsule 39, similar to 11, can be placed on the end of the envelope, to cover the end of the evacuation tube 22 . Said capsule can be brazed to the element 12 along the surface 40.
When the apparatus contains mercury, the brazing substance must be such that it is not attacked by mercury, ie, for example, "Hasteloy" .-
Figure 4 shows how the device can be maintained and connected. The end caps 11 and 39 which constitute the terminals of the filament are clamped between respective clamp terminals 41 and 42, which are constituted by spring clips of any suitable design such as those commonly used to hold fuses. cylindrical tubes. Said clamps are suitably mounted on a support 43 and are adapted for connection to a suitable source of filament heating voltage.
The connection with the anode 10 is made by means of a spring clip 44 of any suitable type, and the ends of said clip are connected with a wire.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
suitable termination, contained in a suitable insulating cover.
Applying voltage across the filament will heat it up, and since the folds of said filament are tightly squeezed and screens 32 and 35 are placed at the ends of said filament, heat from each fold is transmitted to the adjacent folds. and is well maintained between screens. An efficient electron emission is thus obtained, diffused from the filament towards all the parts of the cylindrical anode which surround said filament in the immediate vicinity.
From the foregoing description of the particular embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, it will be seen that the invention establishes a simple and efficient construction of a filament, inside a tube of the metallic type, Conveniently sized and shaped and easily adapted to switch on and off with spring clips. In addition, the device, although it is simple and of small dimensions, uses the type of high efficiency folded ribbon cathode, which allows efficient cathodic emission and a relatively intense current, said cathode being located in the immediate vicinity. of the anode.
Of course, the invention is susceptible of numerous variations, accessible to those skilled in the art, depending on the envisaged applications, and without departing from the field of the invention.
