<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
%'axe transversal est matérialisé par des tourillons symétriquement supportés par le tracteur par rapport à son plan médian; la partie du dispositif d'attelage qui s'articuls sur ces tourillons affecte la forme d'une fourohe aux branches plus ou moins écartées, disposée entre les roues arrière ou
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

La charge verticale de l'attelage est donc appli- quée intégralement à 1?essieu du véhicule précédent et trans- mise directement au sol par les roues de cet essieu. Aucune réaction d'appui ne vient donc modifier l'équilibre longitu- dinal du véhicule précédent* D'autre part, la charge verti- oale des attelages appâte toujours dans le même sens sur leurs articulations, de sorte que, quel que soit le jeu de cas articulations;, les cahots de la route ne provoquent ni chocs, ni mouvements désordonnés des attelages. les axes transversaux T1, T2... des attelages successifs et les broches Ni , N2.... d'extrémité inférieure des axes verticaux V1, V2 .... de oes attelages sont tous placés à la marne hauteur au-dessus du sol;
' autrement dit, pour une même remorque, Z1 par exemple, la droite qui joint les points Ni et N2 coupe l'axe transversal T2.

for: Coupling device for agricultural tractors, cable appli-. semi-mounted trailers.
Any trailer coupling device must allow the trailer to pivot with respect to the tractor simultaneously with three axes perpendicular to each other:
A horizontal axis transverse to the tractor (in case of changes in the longitudinal profile of the soil)
A vertical axis (case of changes of speech)
A longitudinal horizontal axis (case of changes in the transverse profile of the soil).
In the couplings usually 'used with agricultural tractors, these three axes are more or less concurrent and materialized in a single organ: hook, ring, yoke, $ which adapts to the. hook or pull-up bar on it \
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tractor and allows the trailer to pivot in all possible ways.
The working conditions of agricultural tractors determine the height position of their couplers, which can never be placed above large diameter drive rotors. The need to be able to turn short without the drawbar or the jib of the trailer being able to come to bear against the grip studs or the tires of these wheels, therefore obliges the coupling point to be moved far behind the axis of the wheels. driving wheels.
On the other hand the rational equilibrium of a trac-. This requires that any vertical load applied to it be properly distributed over the front and rear axles.
Its point of application must be between the two axles in a position such that a determined fraction of this load applies the front wheels to the ground in opposition to the driving reaction or tendency to pitch up which is proportional to the traction. when a vertical load is supported by the coupling member of the tractor, the condition of rational stability locates the coupling point in front of the axis of the rear wheels, unlike the position usually given at this point.
The case of a vertical load applied to the coupling devices is very frequent it occurs whenever the resultant of the resistance to the movement of the tractor is not horizontal, for example when using mounted tillage implements. . The use of semi-mounted trailers, that is to say, fitted with a single axle offset towards the rear, is a particularly interesting case because it provides numerous advantages of economy and reduces the capacity of the vehicle. tractor transport.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The use of the usual hooks or drawbars does not make it possible to take advantage of these advantages since the additional load thus applied to the tractor behind the rear axle is added to the driving reaction to increase the tendency to pitch up and make driving easier. dangerous or impossible traotor, especially on climbs. Drawbars of the so-called osoillant type; articulated on a vertical axis placed under the center of the. trac- tsar and guided horizontally at the rear, do not eliminate this drawback in any way, their only advantage being (allowing shorter turns'.
The object of the present invention is to simultaneously satisfy the apparently contradictory conditions of the dynamic stability of the tractor and of the need to turn ooart:
In the coupling device according to the invention, the articulation axes necessary for the relative movements of the trailer relative to the tractor are materialized by real axes distinct from each other, the transverse axis being transferred to the front of the wheels. engines of the tractor, while the vertical axis is on the contrary transferred towards the artery of these roads and sufficiently far to allow the turns of reduced radii.
In addition, the vertical axis ensures the rigidity of the whole of this device against bending forces. This arrangement ensures the transfer of vertical forces the weight of a semi-carried trailer for example. on the transverse axis carried by the tractor.
% 'transverse axis is materialized by journals symmetrically supported by the tractor with respect to its median plane; the part of the coupling device which is articulated on these journals takes the form of a fork with more or less spaced branches, arranged between the rear wheels or
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
enveloping these rouas. In the latter case, the rigidity of this part of the device can be increased by a guidance system.
The vertical axis and the longitudinal axis can all be materialized by pivots and bearings' preferably of long enough to have the desired rigidity. Can also. eliminate the longitudinal axis by constituting the vertical axis as follows: this axis is constituted by two independent axis or spindle elements, superimposed and aligned, journaled in suitable members respectively integral with the connected parts of the coupling device to the trailer and the tractor; one of these members is, with respect to the trailer or with respect to the tractor, capable of transverse displacement, while the other, rigidly linked to the coupling device, allows said displacement.
This allows a certain inclination, in the transverse direction, of one of the vehicles with respect to the other. The freedom of movement of the member in question is obtained by supporting it by a connecting element fixed, as the case may be, either to the trailer or to the tractor and which can take any orientation in the space.
According to the invention, a coupling device comprising a real vertical articulation axis can be made automatically stable if the trailer develops a vertical support reaction on this device.
By automatically stable is meant that the trailer tends spontaneously on the road to line up with the tractor. To this end, this axis is inclined slightly towards the rear in the direction of advance of the vehicles so that the play of the articulation on either side of the axis of symmetry tends to lift the trailer. say to create a couple

which tends to bring vehicles back into line.

In fig. 1 and 2, the transverse axis T, the exact position of which is chosen according to the characteristics of the tractor, is placed in front of the axis O of the rear wheels C. It is materialized by one or two cylindrical rods T1, removable or not, fixing either to the central housing or to the chassis of tractor A, or to the rear axle trumpets, in housings themselves integral with the tractor, These housings can be provided by construction or attached by means of bolts, collars * etc., when they have not been foreseen.
In the latter case, the bending and torsional force which the additional load imposes on the rear axle can be reduced by separating as far as possible the two rods constituting the axis T and mounting them on two parts. I right and left inserts rigidly connecting the rear axle trumpets to the central housing or tractor frame A (fig. 3).
The rods constituting the T axis support all the forces applied to the coupling traction, braking, vertical load, transverse forces. developed in bends. These forces are transmitted to them by the part B in the form of a fork, the two right and left branches of which pass either above or below the rear axle of the tractor, pivot at its front ends on the axis T .
These branches can be bent to provide sufficient clearance at the rear axle of the tractor. They can, if necessary, be articulated one on the other around the axis V to allow an adjustment in ,, width of the attachment points to the tractor and in this case the

bores of their anterior ends will be orientable, for example by means of spherical joints, to allow their correct alignment along the T axis.
If the tractor A (fig. 4) does not allow the arrangement, between its rear wheels C, of the fork B, this fork can be placed outside the tracks C so that it is articulated on the axis T carried by the traotor towards his middle for example; to give the fork B the necessary lateral rigidity, this fork is provided with a U-shaped part D cooperating with a slide G fixed to the rear of the tractor frame and whose shape in elevation is like a arc of a circle centered on the T axis.
The height position of the axis 2 on the plotter may optionally be adjustable by a device that is not shown in the figures; for adaptation to varying tensile conditions.
The vertical hitch pivot axis V is placed as far back in the tractor's plane of symmetry as it may be useful for the shortest turns. It serves as a hinge between the posterior part of the fork B and the intermediate yoke F1 which ends the arrow F.
Finally the longitudinal axis L serves as hinges between the yoke F1 and the boom or drawbar of the trailer F.
It can be combined with a traction damper spring and automatic trailer brake control. It 'can also be placed in front' of the axis V, between the latter and the fork B (variant not shown).
Each of the three pivot axes can be achieved using any type of hinge. The figures are only schematic diagrams.

The connection and separation of the trailer and the tractor can be effected by any means: removable axles, etc. The separation can be effected on any of the pivot pins. for example the transverse axis T so as to easily release for other uses the drawbar or the usual hook of the traotor.
In this case, all of the parts constituting the hitch are integral with the jib of the trailer; only the housings of the rods constituting the T axis are integral with the traotor,
The connection with the arrow F can be realism on this fork as shown in figures 5 and 9.
In these figures, the V axis is materialized by two pins or axes M and N arranged respectively one above the other. The vertical axis T thus defined can be rigidly linked to the fork B (case not shown) or, as shown in Figures 5 and 9, to the arrow F of the trailer. The swivels. longitudinal ment of the tractor with respect to the trailer and vice versa, without the use of a hinge pin such as that provided in fig. 1 between the parts
F and F ', is allowed as follows: auns of the pins
M or N is connected to the fork (or to the boom as the case may be) by means of an articulated bar with a universal joint at its two ends.
The other spindle is provided with enough play to allow the first to rotate sufficiently in amplitude about a longitudinal axis. Thus, in fig. 5, the pin M which passed through the rigid yoke F1 carried by the arrow F is linked to the fork B by a bar P carrying Cardan joints at its two ends, thus articulated on this fork B and on a bearing through which the spindle M. For its part, the lower spindle N crosses the fixed yoke F2 of the arrow and, as shown in figure 7,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
it is provided in its central part with a ball joint R which crosses the terminal eye 0.8 the fork B.
Fig.8 shows that this ball joint allows the arrow F to take a certain inclination with respect to the fork B, the bar P following these displacements thanks to its Cardan joints: Thusµ; as can be seen in fig.3, a certain oscillation of amplitude 2 [alpha], of the trailer with respect to the tractor is among its, on either side of an average position, around an axis longitudinal.
In the case of a trailer developing a support reaction on its coupling; for example a semi-mounted trailer. the load of this trailer is partially reported in the leaflet. This charge. determines a compression of the upper part of this coupling and a traction in the lower part; that is why. in the example shown in FIG. 5, the bar P is designed to work on compression. On the contrary, in the example of fig.9; it is the upper spindle M which determines the position of the longitudinal axis of oscillation.
In this oas; the connecting element of the fork B to the lower part F2 of the boom works in traction at as in the previous example; this connection must allow free movement around the longitudinal axis of the arrow relative to the fork, This connection can be made by any stretched rod P suitably articulated at its ends, or as shown in Figure 9 by a chain . To facilitate coupling, the elements P or P1 are advantageously of ion. variable lengths, for example telescopic; as the direction of the forces which these elements undergo is constant, they are always maintained, either in the shortest position for a compressed element, or in maximum elongation for a tensioned element.
Thus, for bar 2, it suffices
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
to provide a full stop, while the elé. P1 can be a cable, a chain or a rod articulated in any way, permanently stretched during work.
The members carrying the two pins M and N can be mounted on telescopic elements both at the same time, either on the tractor or on the trailer, to eliminate any need for length precision in the coupling maneuver.
A trailer, not coupled, resting on its two rones and at the front on a stand, it is possible to set up the pins M and N (the fork B having been previously attached to the tractor) without the distance from the tractor to the trailer thus needs to be determined precisely. When the stand is removed by any means and the weight of the front of the trailer bears on the tractor, the pull and push bars come to bear on their respective stops and are held there automatically,
The coupling maneuver will be further facilitated if the approach of the trailer by the tractor does not need precision in the transverse direction either.
To this end we can provide for example the attachment not provided with a bar or a chain (N in Figure 5, M in Figure
9) of any of the known automatic guiding or coupling devices. the positioning of the other fastener always being facilitated by the variation in length and the possibility of orientation of said bar or said chain.
A device of this type is illustrated in FIG. 10, it corresponds for example to the pin N of FIG. 5. This pin passes through the integral yoke F1

of the. arrow F and passes through an imerant troa atune freely oscillating around a longitudinal axa on this spindle.
For its part, the fork B ends in the quarry with a housing D in which this plate K comes to center itself automatically; thanks to its sharp K1 end when the tractor stalls towards the trailer which forces the two vehicles to line up: It is then easy to carry out the

'?. It suffices for this to incline this axis and to give it, for example, the position shown at 'Z' in fig.5. either by moving the lower pin N forward, or by moving the upper pin M backwards. Given the inclination of the hinge thus produced, any turning of the trailer with respect to. tractor tends to lift the hitch. As the vertical load applied to it tends

The transverse axis T2 .... of each of the coupling devices coincides with the axle El .... of the preceding trailer Z1 .... or at least is placed in the vicinity of this axle.
The vertical load of the coupling is therefore applied entirely to the axle of the preceding vehicle and transmitted directly to the ground by the wheels of this axle. No support reaction therefore modifies the longitudinal balance of the preceding vehicle * On the other hand, the vertical load of the couplings always bait in the same direction on their joints, so that, whatever the play in the case of joints;, the bumps in the road cause neither shocks nor disorderly movements of the couplings. the transverse axes T1, T2 ... of the successive couplings and the pins Ni, N2 .... at the lower end of the vertical axes V1, V2 .... of these couplings are all placed at the height above the ground;
'in other words, for the same trailer, Z1 for example, the straight line which joins the points Ni and N2 intersects the transverse axis T2.
Under these conditions when one wheel of the trailer
Z1 passes through a hole or over an obstacle of a dimension commonly encountered on roads, it is practically possible to admit that the whole of the trailer pivots around the longitudinal axis Ni, N2 and that consequently this displacement n not significantly influence the position of other vehicles in the train. @
This movement does not therefore tend to create an appreciable yaw movement being transmitted, and amplifying, step by step, to all vehicles, which would constitute a danger at road speeds.
The train thus produced is therefore stable on its trajectory both vertically and horizontally, which is not generally the case for two-wheel trailers with other coupling modes.
The location of the vertical pivot pins V2 in relation to the axles of two consecutive trailers is

1. A device for coupling a trailer to a tractor, in which the articulation axes necessary for the relative movements of the trailer with respect to the tractor are materialized by at least two real axes distinct from each other, namely a transverse axis carried forward of the driving wheels of the tractor and a vertical axis carried towards the rear of these wheels and sufficiently far to allow the turns of reduced radii.
