<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

E X E M P L E I.

for: "Improvements made or relating to insecticidal compositions: 'This invention relates to improvements made to or relating to insecticidal compositions and particularly relates to means for combating cockroaches, ants, flying mites, and lepisms. , and other crawling insects.
It is known that benzene hexachloride and compounds of the type:
EMI1.1
(in which X means chlorine or bromine, R1 means an organic radical containing at least three carbon atoms, and R2 means an organic radical with at least five carbon atoms), in particular para, para'-dichlor-diphenyl -trichloroethane (all these substances being hereinafter collectively referred to as "active insecticidal agents") possess outstanding insecticidal properties. For practical application, these insecticidal agents have heretofore been used together with a carrier, either in the form of solutions or emulsions or in the form of powders for dusting.
None of these application methods are entirely appropriate for the control of cockroaches and other inseotes
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
crawling, especially in that it is extremely difficult to limit the material applied to the exact area where cockroaches can be reached, without spreading it over many other areas which it is not desirable to cover with material insecticide.
The present invention provides, as a novel article of manufacture, an insecticidal solid material containing a proportion of one of said active insecticidal agents, in the form of a body composed of an active insecticidal agent and a liquid, for example water, combined with a diluent or solid filler, which body is die-cast or stretched to the desired shape, and then dried.
For the practice of the present invention, the insecticidal agent (preferably benzene hexachloride as mixed isomers or, if possible, the active [gamma] -isomer alone. ) is mixed with a small amount of water (or another suitable liquid such as petroleum oil or an organic solvent which may or may not be a solvent for the active ingredient) to form a thick paste , and the dough is then subjected to forming pressure, for example in a mold, to produce a stick or a block which is then dried.
The product contains a solid diluent or a filler such as kaolin, chalk or the like; it may also contain a coloring material to give a colored appearance (eg brown) the particles of which will be practically invisible when adhering to the location where it is to be used (eg a floor or wood paneling surface). The product may also contain activating agents such as pyrethrum and organic sulphocyanates.
It may be advantageous, especially when the product may come into contact with rain, to incorporate a large proportion of a substance of a waxy or greasy nature, such as, for example, solid paraffin. An important application in connection with this is the protection of fruit trees against harmful insects such as ants and female winter moth, the waxy or greasy substance tending to prevent loss of the product by filtration in the event of rain.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The present invention is illustrated by the following non-limiting examples:
E X E M P L E I.
An insecticidal composition is prepared by mixing with the following ingredients:
3 pounds of kaolin
1 pound of benzene hexachloride (mixed isomers)
1 quart of water, to form a stiff dough which is then die-cast into the shape of a pencil, and then dried.
By application of the pencil, lines are drawn on floors, walls, shelves, cupboards, etc. or around a food source, ie. in such a way that cockroaches or other crawling insects, going out in search of food, will have to cross the lines, and thus there will remain on them particles of the active insecticidal agent which then has the possibility of exerting its deadly effect.
EXAMPLE II.
By the method described in Example I, a pencil was prepared with the following composition:
3 pounds of a mixture containing equal parts by weight of para, para'-dichlor-diphenyl-trichloroethane and kaolin,
1.75 deliver kaolin, stock quality,
1 pound of solid paraffin,
1 1/2 pint of water.
This pencil can be used for applying a strip of the product around fruit trees to provide protection against harmful insects such as ants.
